Italy also had a colonial empire. The Italian colonial empire consisted of European and African territories. Did it came any close to the Roman Empire? Italian dictator Mussolini dreamt of a rebirth of the Roman Empire. During the 19th century Italy united from Papal States to a Kingdom. This period was named Risorgimento (also known as "the Resurgence"). Italian politicians like Francesco Crispi wanted to expand and supported Italian colonization. Their first colony was at the Assab Bay area. This laid the foundation for Italian Eritrea. Two Italo-Ethiopian Wars took place. The first one was lost. The second one was won but the Italians suffered heavy cassualties. In 1901, a concession in Tientsin was ceded to the Kingdom of Italy by Imperial China. The Italians conquered Libya in 1911 during the Italo-Turkish War. During the Pacification of Libya the Italians implemented brutal policies to subdue Libyan rebellions that were led by Omar Mukhtar. In the 1930s the Italians overthrew the rule of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie. During WW II Italy gained some territories with the help of Nazi Germany. During the Italian North Africa Campaign Italy's territories were lost. After WW 2 Italy was transformed from a kingdom into a republic. With this Italian colonialism had come to an end.

@Noar Gambar did you not do your history? Or are you actually serious? Arab came to "Somalia" in the 7th century, we have deep roots with African and Arab history, Italy came to somalia on the 1880s , we also have similar culture with Italy but not as much. Both Arab and Italy did not fully cause whats happening today, the conflict in somalia started in 1991. The Somalia before that time was a very peaceful and beautful country. Next time you say something, check the actual history and think. The shariaw law which was introduced in 2009 did not cause much problem in somalia but sadly the government and police force are not taking the law seriously and focusing on bring rich. If you think carefully, you would know that 2009 is not that far from us, it can not cause all the problems especially since it was in somalia early. Seriously though, how would you not know that?

The Ethiopian Empire at the tail end of the 19th century was actually a fair bit more stable and prosperous then many think. The lower duchies had largely rallied behind the Emperor, so much so, that they invaded the Southern Sudan in the 1880's. Menelik the second, Who ascended to the throne in 1889, had large support from his vassals, and managed to establish greater ties to both the French and the Russians, albeit, that support would turn out to be pretty minimal when actual fighting occurred. During the First Etho-Italian war, the Italians figured that due to the perceived unstability, that many of Menelik's vassals would rebel against him, especially the Shewa (which makes little sense since Menelik WAS shewa). Hence why they were so confident in being able to defeat the African empire with minimal soldiers. During the second invasion in the 1930's. The Ethiopian stability had still been recovered to a large degree, and were eventually outnumbered by the Italians, who had significantly better equipment and training. Still though, the Ethiopian armies performed well, nearly routing the Italians during the '36 Christmas offensive, it was only the use of heavier tanks and chemical weapons, that they managed to turn the tide. But over one third of the inter-land country was never occupied, as Guerrilla fighters plagued Italian supply lines and the cities. Already, their occupation of the Ethiopia, cost the Italian government more money then it made ANNUALLY.

Firstly this is an awesome video. I learnt lot much from this video. The reason Italy could not expand into a global empire is their limited access to the oceans. The position of Italian peninsula is good to control the lands of Mediterranean but achieving global success is a big task. When war broke out Italians do not have great access to colonial troops which the UK had. Italian empire also lagged a bit compared to UK, France in industrialization which made losses irreplaceable.

Thanks to Italy creating Italian East Africa, Liberia took the “title” of being the only African country to never be colonized. Ironically enough it had been established by European-Americans who formed a ruling class over the natives. EDIT: Apparently Liberia was an American colony before declaring independence in 1847 (which America only recognized in 1863 but did nothing to stop), so actually every country was colonized at some point.

Cool video! My great grandfather fought in the second Ethiopian campaign. He thought it was a senseless war and he actually had a lot of respect for the Ethiopians, but he didn’t have any choice. He used to recount of the various battles he took part in and all of the horrible stuff he saw. Between the lack of food and water, high temperatures, war crimes, and violent hand to hand combat it must have been a truly traumatising experience. I still have a lot of stuff he brought home from Ethiopia like a silver tray he was gifted by an hotel owner there, and plenty of photos. Unfortunately I never had the privilege of meeting him and all his stories have been passed onto me by my grandparents.

It is because Tewedros II is the one that reunited Abyssinia after the Age of Princes (at which the empire was ruled by autonomous war Lords that competed to have more power). Tewedros II was betrayed by Yowhannes IV who favoured the British. Next, Yowhannes IV claimed himself emperor but mereb milash warlord Woldemichael Solomon didn't accept him and rebelled. Alula tricked Woldemichael and changed the administration with another warlord. However, the entire eritrean territories were indeed part of Abyssinia when it was re-established in the 14th century. The Habesha were indeed one United empire for about 2 millennium except in the last 300 years.

While Italy stomped Ethiopia in the second war, it drained their resources heavily and costed a ton of money. Also, the Spanish civil war soaked up Italian manpower and sent equipment never returned to Italy. The Italians were now short of their best ammo, shells, modern guns and other equipment. The great depression affected Italy more harshly than either Britain or France, and while Mussolini did help the country industrialize, it was not enough in time. Italy also lacked resources such as coal, and it didn't have the infanstructure to extract the oil in Libya. Italian naval ships were outdated by the time of ww2 as well, as they didn't have the money to modernize them yet. Italy was pretty much worn out by the time of WW2, having lost precious money and resources in lesser conflicts that drained their war making abilities. Had Italy waited and healed it's industry until 1943 like Mussolini wanted, they probably would have been a force to be reckoned with, but Hitler and Mussolini jumped the shark and shit the bed.

Thank you very much for these clear analysis of the Italian colonialism :). As Italian, after years spent reading books and diaries of Italian soldiers and politicians, I came to the conclusion that Italian Monarchy was the cause of all the bad war-performances of the Italians. Italy got united quite late compared to other European countries and many Italians did not feel themselves as "Italians" at all. The Monarchy started Colonial and War campaigns often AGAINST the consent of the Parliament and of the people (the majority of the Italians was made of poor farmers, struggling to survive and completly alien to any kind of nationalism: what kind of interest could they have in occupying or in fighting lands of which they did not even know the existence?). Even though the High Command of the "Regio Esercito" (Royal Italian Army") always reported the tragic shortage of artillery, means of transports, sometimes even uniforms and supplies, the Monarchy decided to undertake campaigns without any organisation or effective attack-strategy. The moral is: Italian Monarchy was a DISGRACE for Italy and involved a reluctant country in humiliating "wars of conquest" without any preparation.

@@HistoryHustle Italy was a German Colony & part of the German Empire for 2 years (1943 - 1945). Germans controlled & colonised the whole of Europe from 1939 to 1945 (7 yrs). The Germans united Europe, cleaned up crime & brought discipline to the Europeans. Italians occupied only some portions of Ethiopia & for a shorter duration (5 yrs). The Europeans & Italoans only got independence from their German colonial rulers because the Brits, Russians & Yanks helped them. Germans did most for Italian pride by supporting & rescuing Mussolini. Let's be consistent in using the word, 'Colony'. If Ethiopia was an Italian Colony, then Italy was a German Colony

@@yolandacomito This is a controversial statement. Left-wing Europeans would accuse you of racism and only lay the blame on themselves. Although I do believe it is a combination of factors, I find it hard to deny that many African nations struggle to became wealthy. There is a repeating story of one corrupt dictator that is overthrown by a "freedom fighter" who then becomes the next corrupt dictator. Looking at other postcolonial states in the world some have managed to do well: Malaysia, Brunei and even Vietnam to some extent. Rwanda is doing really well. In the end I believe it has to do with the level of development. Africa as a continent before European colonization wasn't as developed as Europe. Asia on the other hand did had come developing cultures. I believe colonization halted and hindered development to a large extent (with exception here and there), but when that was over some it was a struggle for many nations. Some have managed to get out. Others - like many African nations - are still struggling. There is much to say about this topic. So many different areas I haven't touched upon.

the king in Ethiopia during the 19th century was Atse Tewodros, he wasn't poor but he committed suicide rather than taken by British force. he sent a message for Queen Victoria about sending a person who teach the Ethiopian how to manufacture a fire arm but she ignore his request and he offended so he captured all missionaries in Ethiopia and force them to work a cannon at a place called Gafat first they say we didn't know any thing but at last they manage to manufacture a cannon called Sebastopol which fire once and never work again when the queen heard that the king manage to manufacture a fire arm she sent a thousands of troops from India with giant Elephants which frightened the Ethiopians who never seen an Elephant as a domestic animal so they manage to reach Mekdela where the king was settled the king try fought but it seems impossible to break that amount of armed force so he committed suicide. And also Ethiopia never been fully colonized under the command of Benito Mussolini the Italian only captured the capital and the place where there were the castle of the regional lords which also a city but not the rurar part of Ethiopia which fully under control of Ethiopian Guerrilla forces..
