The United States Postal Service has been around for more than 200 years and is actually older than the United States. However, the organization that always makes it through rain, sleet, and hail may not make it through 2020. A law passed at the end of 2006, combined with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, has led to most of the post office's current woes. Here's why the post office is $160 billion in debt.

As a mailman I take pride in my work. We work hard and deliver thousands of pieces a day, in any condition. We have aging trucks, equipment, etc. The people are what make this job great! We just need a little help, the post office never lost money, we only made it by having efficient and affordable SERVICE. That’s what I hope people know is that, while you May get a package or mail piece incorrectly, but it’s only .01% of our daily deliveries for the day. Thank you to those who still support us to this day!

We need to decide if the USPS is a business or a government public service, it's trying to be both. If it's a business then let it set the rates it needs to function. If a gov. service then pay the freight to keep it running.

USPS is something that Trump touched with his little dirty fingers and made it a political issue. Now that it is a political issue, there isn't going to be a logical and rational discussion. Now the discussion is whether USPS should or should not exist rather than how it should exist. Congress fucked USPS with 2007 bill, so they should bail them out or retire the law.

Or the usps can get approval from congress to only fund future retirement accounts as needed and withdraw the money for pensioners never even born yet.Raise its rates competitively for fist class mail, quit giving amazon a sweetheart deal who's attempting to replace the usps with its own workers and drones anyways (so believing amazon will be with usps in the distant future is dreaming anyways) and as necessary have every other day mail delivery in the rural areas and stop with the overtime. Now Trump whos declared bankruptcy 6 times with his "big brain" is incapable of fixing it.

I run a small business too. Maybe this is a time for readjustment. Trucking companies insurance rates doubled this year and a lot of them are closed/closing. But, a couple of fleet of vans and dependable workers in all states can replace them. A new private owned logistics service can easily rise from this (maybe even a few). The post office can downsize and the people can take ownership instead of being unemployed/underemployed. 🤔

I hope it happens. I don't need or want USPS any more. If you lose several thousands of dollars in packages every year, you tell me what you will do. I don't get any mail at my address. I have gone to paperless billing, and I receive all packages by Fed-ex or UPS now. I removed my postal box off the house 6 years ago, and I don't miss it one bit! @@hollytimlick9470 you do realize that a lot of the time, your ups packages are handed off to the USPS for final delivery and that UPS and FEDEX only serve profitable areas and ignore all the rest (such as rural areas). I'm a proud postal worker. I'm a clerk. The amazing thing about the USPS (United States Postal Service) is the organization was never designed to operate at a profit. The organization exists to deliver America's mail in all 50 states, military institutions, and U.S territories. If the organization is removed buying products online and shipping costs will increase decreasing discretionary income of U.S citizens which will be detrimental to the economy. We are the connective tissue of the nation ensuring all Americans can reach one another by by post.

I am a rural carrier. Thanks for the video. It was concise and accurate. The background on the pension funds is not known or understood by people outside the USPS. By the way the bill that created the prefunding of pensions was a PPac bill backed by FedEx and UPS. This has been a long slow bleed that is coming to a head. We work hard to get you mail and packages delivered everyday. If the Post Office is dissolved it will cost people ten to twenty dollars to mail a letter with the competition. I hope I can work there for twenty more years.

That’s interesting 🤔. Maybe the government bill was a way of stunting growth of post office so they didn’t have too many advantages that keep other businesses from thriving. Other businesses are thriving but they are not necessarily stable. The post office is unaffected by the decline of stock market as it should be. It’s still the United States greatest connector. I wonder how things would change if it were funded 50 years in advance. Maybe it’s time to think it through again and see if trump could draft another bill to loosen up unused funds.

Also worth noting that many military veterans get their medications delivered by mail. FedEx and UPS typically don't deliver outside of cities and adjacent suburbs, relying on USPS for the last leg of the journey; without the Post Office, any veteran who lives in a more rural area is going to have major problems getting medications delivered.. I think that the post office does a pretty darn good job at getting mail to us, but a lot of companies are having trouble funding their pension requirements. The Social Security trust fund isn't in great shape either last I heard. The retirement age of 65 worked well when people were only living into their late 60s, but now people are living into their 80s and beyond. That's a good thing, but most pension plans weren't designed to deal with that. Congress and the President are going to have to come to some agreement on what can be done because we need the post office to be functional well past this September.

If you think the postal service isn’t necessary, wait until Amazon, FedEx and UPS dominate the market in delivering goods….all the little things will cost a lot more than they already do. As of now, those companies rely on USPS to deliver at a reasonable cost. Once their business model doesn’t include deliveries by the USPS, every little thing you send will cost a lot more to be shipped.

Shit for a business that can't pay their employees they sure do hire alot of people... im a clerk and the letters are slightly down but the parcels are up. We deliver FedEx ups and Amazon. We can barely get the mail up in time for the carriers. The problem with usps is nepotism within management bunch of friends and family with no business experience trying to make business decisions... i literally watched a pse the lowest position in the post office become a post master the highest position at the post office in two years because his dad was mpo of the district..

Supervisors seducing young PSEs and sleeping with them, and when they get caught they don't get fired, they are either promoted or transferred to another city only to return in a couple of yrs, once the dust has settled. I agree, reform is needed in the management ranks, too many mid management jobs, they need to be abolished apparently the supervisors have time to be sleeping around, they're not busy enough.

In 2010, the postmaster general’s salary authorized by Congress rose to $273,296. Potter stepped down as postmaster general in December 2010, at which time he was awarded $3.1 million in accumulated pension benefits, which he earned over a 32-year period in government service, as well as compensation for leave not taken, and outplacement assistance for a period of two years. In 2011, Potter was replaced by Deputy Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe, whose salary in his first year stood at $267,840.

Lobbyists pushed to take portions of the USPS packaging and freight for decades. USPS was mostly left with the least profitable mail and parcels. Even though USPS delivers a huge portion of last-leg for their competitors - at a loss, because USPS is Constitutionally directed to deliver, whereas competitors aren't. Congress' Prefunding Mandate exists to choke the USPS out and chop it up to sell to the competitors - or, failing that, privatize it into massive profitability. Repealing the Prefunding Mandate, or even walking it back to 10yr instead of 75 would give the USPS back its own money that Congress stole. Billions in self-generated revenue. But instead, the White House installed three Privatizers within a year. When all it would take is modifying or repealing the Prefunding Mandate.

As a postal employee work in different craft over the years. I can tell that the postal service problem is not retirement pension funding but mismanagement. Postal service willing to waste millions of dollars for nonsense, post office never own any of the postal building. They pay more money to lease land for 10yrs more than the Land worth, they spend billions of dollars buying garbage trucks. Spent money on BS. Sometimes I ask my boss why does Post office spend money on this kind of nonsense they told me it's government money so shot up and do your job.
