Man I remember the feeling of having such high hopes after Maladroit, only to be let down by this whiny Make Believe drivel. Some people actually like it though, and that's the great thing about Weezer; if you told everyone to rate their top 10 favorite Weezer songs, you wouldn't see the same list twice.

1994 Weezer: "In the garage, I feel safe No one cares about my ways In the garage, where I belong No one hears me sing this song" 2005 Weezer: "I wanna live a life like that (a movie star) I wanna be just like a king Beverly Hills That's where I want to be! Living in Beverly Hills... Rolling like a celebrity!" Great video btw, you got a new subscriber. :D

I wonder: How much of Weezer's downfall is actually our fault? I mean, until Raditude dropped, their good albums were met with a sharp sales decline or tanking critically or both (Pinkerton, Maladroit, and Red), while them just playing it safe/releasing crap (Green, Make Believe) ended up becoming hits. Though I'm one of the people who didn't really care for green, and thought Maladroit was a big step up, which is not really the majority opinion, I guess. Hell, I think the red album's better than green.

While I can't defend Beverly Hills, the rest of the album is very solid in my opinion. This is the first time I heard of anyone hating Perfect Situation. It's definitely one of the best songs on the album. At one point this album was my favorite post-Pinkerton album but I've come to appreciate Green and Maladroit much more, but I still like Make Believe a lot. I understand your issues with the album, and many Weezer fans feel the same way but it's a very fun listen for me and is the last album of theirs I enjoy all the way through (Beverly Hills I can tolerate) Thanks for reviewing!

My first Weezer song was Beverly Hills when I was 10. 2 days later my older sister showed me perfect situation. 1 Christmas later, she gets the entire album (& Simple Plan's debut, yeah another reason why middle school was hell!) "This is Such a Pity" is one of my favorite, if not favorite, Weezer song, including the first 2 albums. I don't care if the chord progression repeats, it's a very colorful song and deep lyrics and Rivers actually sounds like he's INTO the song when he's singing.
@8Seven659 жыл бұрын
No mention of haunt you every day? I never hear anyone ever talk about it, am I the only person who thinks that it was the diamond in the rough on this album and made an amazing closing track? The guitars with the chorus and solo were fantastic, everything synced so well, yeah it was slow and sad but I think it was brilliant. I rate that song with some of their best, it deserved to close a better album.
@8Seven659 жыл бұрын
As a side note, I didn't hate the album, but there are a lot of cringe worthy moments on it. Red was hit and miss, I liked that they tried new shit, not my thing though. Raditude was the first album I refused to buy, I felt bad, but i couldn't support that.

To be honest, I do think “Haunt You Every Day” is one the best songs on Make Believe. That’s quite underrated. Maybe in my top 40 if I could choose. I also think “The Damage In Your Heart”, an alternate version of “This Is Such A Pity” (known as “Tell Me What You Did) and “Perfect Situation” are good tracks on Make Believe.

I can understand that. Personally, I think their first break-up and the 5 years we spent waiting for the album softened the blow a wee bit. For me, at least. Back in the day we didn't think we'd even get another Weezer album, so just getting to hear one more album from them was a treat. And when that album turned it out to actually be not-half-bad, it felt even better.

Idk, Rivers sounded pretty sorry for himself in the Pinkerton era, too. What about Tragic Girl? Pretty twilight fanfiction related if you ask me. Having said that, the lyrics aren't that great in songs like Perfect Situation; it doesn't seem as though they were given as much attention as in previous albums. It's as though they were added as in afterthought, whereas previously the music seemed to fit around the lyrics. And other times, like you demonstrate, the lyrics are completely nonsensical. I like Perfect Situation :$ Not Beverly Hills though.. :s

You know, I think I actually like perfect situation, granted I never had to hear people obnoxiously wail to it, but it's whineyness could be excused by me because I was 15 when I first heard it, too an adult it's just stupid, but to s hormonal teenager who doesn't get how the world works yet it makes slot of sence. I think Rivers was just trying to make an honest song, although songs like Beverly Hills kind of disingenizes it by making it seem like this was the album for him to complain about nothing. Here is my defense of perfect situation. Perfect situation lyrically isn't just about whining that you want girls or that girls don't like you. I think the lyrics are supposed to be about being in a perfect situation where you have exactly what you want and then doing something yourself to mess it up. It's about losing something and having no outside factor to blame because you know the pain you are feeling is your fault. And as for the chorus, like you said a few videos ago, Weezer's lyrics sometimes don't always make sense and the song serves to create a certain feeling overall. I think the perfect situation does a great job of this. The chorus has no words, yet the is filled with emotion. Especially in the chorus that Rivers sings alone without the other instruments. The first time I ever heard this song was actually at a Weezer concert before I knew very much about the band. And I remember the acapella chorus was filled with so much emotion that it was just haunting to me on a level that I had never experienced before in music and that feeling stuck with me for days after. I think the song really does have a real raw meaning and that the verses build that idea and then the chorus just opens the floodgates of that emotion caused by them.

You nailed it. "Make Believe," sadly, killed my Weezer fandom dead and was the first album of theirs I didn't even bother buying. (I haven't bought one since.) "Beverly Hills" was definitely the turning point and is certainly the nadir of their career. The funny thing is this album was called a "return to form" by some at the time. I actually like Beverly Hills. I don't think that the "I just don't belong" portion was supposed to be taken as Rivers sincerely wanting to be "one of them" but rather acceptance and just not caring about or associating with that sort of culture at all, I listen to the song and it feels more snarky or like a satirical view on the whole celebrity culture. Overall Make Believe is okay. Just okay. To put it in an analogy, it's like you went out to eat a delicious meal and brought it home only to have it a week later after leaving it your fridge. It's like a stale Maladroit It definitely has some good songs (My favorites are "Hold me" "Haunt you Every Day" and "This is such a pity") I don't really find any of the songs too offensive. The worst thing I can really call it is "uninspired at most times" You make good videos, although I really don't appreciate when people just start yelling and hamming it up like you do, often. I can't tell you how to live your life though.

Dude, your very a fair reviewer and I think you have a great opinion about Weezer. It's nice to see such a dedicated fan, to the point where you are genuinely disappointed when the album they put out is bad because you know they can do better.

I BLAME YOU CRASH, I am now very interested with listening to Weezer! In FACT, After seeing your retrospectives on their albums, I went to listen to EWBAITE and I adore it. I have yet to listen to Blue (which I gladly downloaded), as I already gave a listen to Pinkerton back in my last year of high school.

I got into Weezer at some point after the Red album. I like this album and that one more than you do. I also connect with some of these songs a bit more. However, the first album after I got into them that came out was Raditude. I was very disappointed to get into a band right before their downfall.

Don't even act like you can't relate to Perfect Situation, we've all been there. Catching feelings for and eventually starting to love a girl you will never be good enough for. It's a song that is emotional, genuine, and oftentimes painful to listen to.

Haunt you everyday has the best weezer solo behind only in dreams and there are some pretty underrated songs in make believe

Can't criticize Make Believe based on number of chords. Say It Aint So is 4 chords except for the bridge. El Scorcho is three chords except for the bridge. Sweater Song is three chords except for the solo section and the final chorus. Island in the Sun is mostly 4 chords. etc, etc, etc.

Even though I quite like make believe and the new albums as well as the old, I actually quite like this video. You gave your reasons on why you don't like this album in a funny yet honeysway, and respected opposing opinions. Even though the I really like the Red Album, I'm actually excited for the Red Album video. Great work!

Your critique of Make Believe are valid, upon revisiting it, yeah, it's... not good. But I can't bring myself to really hate it because it was the first Weezer album I ever bought (I know, shame on me) I should have bought the Blue Album instead, but I kinda have a soft spot for it still.

Hey man liking the videos. I agree that make believe is simple and not nearly as good as blue, pinkerton, maladroit and green but i dont think having a simple chord progression is enough to say its bad. Sweater song is known for its simple progression and its great. same with buddy holly. i think it is just more of a lack of inspiration like you pointed out. Also dont you think pinkerton was a bit self absorbed and depressing? and that the protagonist would be hanging himself in a closet? I hate to compare make believe to pinkerton but ultimately i dont think depressing, self-absorbed lyrics with simple chord progressions dont necessarily make it bad its just the musical content is so bad. The lyrics are so uninteresting and the melodies are crap. Thats just my opinion. What do you think?

Beverley Hills is bomb. Idgaf what anyone says, this album is catchy as hell, and even if it wasn’t a quality album, it’s an album where I can bop my head to some of the songs. Perfect situation is also a good one btw.

Me too i like how it's from weezer but still has a light more preppy sound. They did it a hell of a lot better here than on raditude even though the ballads kinda sucked. It's not deep but it doesn't have to be it's effective.
