What we need to remember is that there was life before phones, people survived before phones. Not having a phone isn't the end of the world. But what will be soul destroying is if you get to the end of your life and look back with regret at all the time you wasted staring at your phone

I think this is my biggest fear for a lot of people. Looking back on their life, realizing it was wasted on a screen

I just purchased one. I hate my smartphone, I’d like to call it an addiction, 11h of screentime nearly everyday, and I feel like I have lost myself. I’ll keep my smartphone and use it as a camera but I don’t want it for socials anymore .

I’d love to go back to flip phones, but bring back something like the iPod touch in a more advanced form with all of the video technology and lenses they put in the current phones. I love my iPhone as a creative tool for that reason, particularly as an alternative to more expensive video equipment. Sometimes it’s frustrating that such a powerful creative tool gets dropped and tossed around, and collects dirt and grime in my pocket.

I know this is a year old comment, but i dug out my old ipod 5th gen out of my dads toolbox a couple weeks back. God its refreshing! Lovely small screen, not current enough to be compatible with most of the stuff im trying to avoid, will not be surprised if apple bring back an ipod touch esque device soon.

Yes you can talk to people through social media but once you have the people you want to talk with, you can leave social media and that’s what I’m planning to do, eventually and I’m going back to a flip phone

I’m seeing a lot of people rocking the iPad min for social media consumption at home and an IPhone with bare minimum apps for when out and about. I like it 👍🏼

Good video. I still use my dumb phones. I have a smart phone on which I have not downloaded any apps. I use my so called smart phone as a phone. The problem I have with smart phones is that their users never look where they are walking. Smart phones seem to the be all and end all of some folks existence. People are losing the ability to hold conversations and interact with people face to face in a meaningful way.

Completely agree. In car rides in my car no one is allowed to play on their phone, and the music is turned down to almost 0. I much prefer the conversation

ditched mine 2020 when they anounced track and trace, no gaslighting on me, or no digital i'd. pen and paper now and meeting in real life making dates, we shouldn't be phoning anyone, we should be together as a family. no emergency alerts now either barking orders at me, so i was right all along, when i ditched it in 2020.

I cant see such a radical change take place in 5 years, but this might be a change which starts taking place. I can even see the big companies make focus smartphones, a whole phone with the focus mode as default, probably the same phone named differently, locked in focus mode.😂 Although Apple doesnt dig into niches and other companies arent as likely to pull such a stunt…

I dont think smartphone is the problem here. I think it’s self control, if you want to reduce screentime just dont download or install those addictive apps like instagram/tiktok etc. i personally like to use smartphone because of its feature esp apple icloud, reminders, notes.. for me it’s all abt convenience
@techno_eclipse Жыл бұрын
This is the argument basically, I always go back to the idea that self control normally isn’t enough. An alcoholic wouldn’t leave a case of beer in their house, I feel as though we should treat smartphones with the same aggressiveness, while also understand what you potentially lose.
@Saroku1000 Жыл бұрын
@@techno_eclipse You aren't automatically an alcoholic just because you sometimes drink alcohol in your life. Your assumption that owning a smartphone automatically makes you addicted to social media is flawed. Your measurements don't make sense for people who aren't addicted. If you aren't addicted, self control is the only thing you need. And its not even hard to do, because, hey, you aren't addicted. Thats an extreme view. Extreme views often tend to be wrong. I am not addicted to social media as a smartphone owner since 2011 and I can assure you that its all about self control and usage. Drinking alcohol doesn't make you automatically an alcoholic, just like using social media does not automatically make you addicted. Your argument is basically "Close all grocery stores, convenience stores and bars in this world, because self control is not enough, everyone, even those who aren't interested, will buy alcohol as long they are sold in the stores and bars and automatically become an alcoholic" Just because one of many possible sections/functions of something can potentially make you addicted if used wrong with no self control doesn't mean that you should get rid of the whole thing. Thats just a very undifferentiated view. You need to differentiate between addicted people and non addicted people. People who are addicted may need to put their smartphone away, but thats not the way for non-addicted people. You can't just lump non-addicted people and addicted people together and think that the extreme measurements that accicted people need is also necessary for non-addicted people, because it isn't. Non-addicted people don't need extreme measurments against addiction. By that logic no one should ever own alcohol in their house, because by that logic, everyone who drinks alcohol must be an alcoholic and automatically can't resist alcohol if they see it in their house.

It takes mental energy to resist a temptation that is easily accessible, it literally drains you. Pretty sure there are studies on this actually, people performed worse at mental tasks when they were resisting a temptation

I feel like this was a reach and wishful thinking that manifested into a firm opinion. Even though I would like that change for ppl to do, many ppl still see no issue with social media. rather they don't even think about thinking about abandoning that type of addiction because they care what other ppl think.
