Have you noticed there’s been an uprise of celebrities showing up with completely different faces in the span of a few months? Jawline surgery is a new beauty trend that’s been popping up and I’m here to look deeper into this topic. Liam Payne a former member of the boy group One Direction is the inspiration behind this video after he showed up to an event with a new face. TikTok plastic surgeons and cosmetic procedure enthusiasts on social media have speculated that Zac Efron and other Idols have gotten procedures done as well. Is this new handsome Squidward part of the Hollywood phenomenon of men trying to fit the male gaze so they can play certain roles, or is there something else going on? The Rise of Jaw Implants is Scary #edvasian

It feels so surreal to see people in tiktok and insta comments describe Liam Payne's old face as 'soft', when just 20+ years ago, he would've been considered to have a pretty strong jawline. It was, compared to 'average' people, pretty defined and rather square, just in a more natural way. Like yes, it's less square compared to what he has now...but ANYTHING would less dramatic compared to his face now.
@freudiannipslip

Agreed! He had the kind of face that would've aged really well imo, a strong foundation and defined border but softer interior features; I think he could have gone the Paul Rudd route as he got older, where he looked great but not weirdly young. His face does appear soft and youthful before. His features are naturally round and undramatic in appearance. Most people will have a jawline if they’re lean enough, I wouldn’t say his face was “chiseled.” If you touched his cheek, you would feel softness, and not just poke straight through his skin and feel teeth.

Lip fillers are pretty tame compared to more complicated procedures. My mom has lip fillers and a few other stuff that's not surgical. I have thin lips, but I don't like needles so lip fillers are not in my plans anytime soon. My nose isn't straight and the tip is bigger than I'd like but it's hella expensive and painful to get it done, I don't like pain so I'll pass. If we can fix things we don't like, without completely changing our face, and have the money, why not? Some small changes can make a person really happy in their body, it just depends how far they go. I'd say don't go overboard, but if it's not that big of a change and it makes you happier why not go for it? Of course don't follow the trends, choose what you think will help you be more comfortable in your body.
@georgia4111
@georgia4111 Жыл бұрын
@@viviennart I think it’s more the thought process that you have to “fix” anything to begin with: we DO unfortunately live in a superficial/looks-focused society, and thus to pressure to conform to beauty as an attainable goal is constantly there. BUT I think the original comment is referring more to WHY we even need to feel “beautiful” to begin with; while symmetry and beauty exist in nature, I can’t help but feel like we’ve become hyper focused/sensitive to really specific standards of beauty (e.g plump lips) leading us to tweak features that even 20 years ago were considered attractive/weren’t even thought about at all! e.g eyebrows! Growing up (and rather regretfully) I never felt much pressure to draw on my (non existent) eyebrows but sine the mid-2010s it’s almost unthinkable to neglect your eyebrows in a makeup routine. Plastic surgery/ cosmetic procedures are slowly becoming that as well: especially Botox/fillers

Right, I think a lot of men pretend or perhaps genuinely believe that what they do is for the sake of appealing to women, but it's more so a signal to their male peers. Most women don't particularly care about expensive cars, or hunting, or which guy has the most Chadly jawline. There's a similar phenomenon with women and body type; women often believe that they need to be rail-thin to be attractive to men, but most men when surveyed say they prefer curvier bodies on women. The way we relate to and compete with members of our own gender can be so interesting.

He had to get reconstructive surgery to his face as that got the most damage. When we really break down the reasoning behind these trends (like the desire to be different, cultural appropriation, self hate, fetish, body dysmorphia, or even boredom) it becomes much easier to separate ourselves from them. @love When I say ‘supposed to be’, I am referring to things on a cultural, media trend level and not a fundamental one. But honestly, people get more flak for being confident than they do for being insecure. Someone who says they’re comfortable in their body will get a lot of snarky comments and ones bringing them down. Whereas people who say they’re insecure about something will get tons of reassurance and comments about how they’re relatable or inspiring or beautiful. I think it’s rather unhealthy.
@ruiqi22
@ruiqi22 Жыл бұрын
@love Yeah, I feel that way now. But when you’re a kid, you’re trying to figure out who you should be. So when everyone else is trying to be relatable and unhealthy and one-upping each other with how little they slept and how badly they messed up, you’re like ‘oh okay. This is what I should say so people don’t react negatively.’ It becomes what you do and how you think as well. So I made my original comment not really for me as I am now but in the hopes that we as a society won’t push insecurities onto growing kids by featuring trendy surgeries in videos and magazines or by resenting people who don’t have or have but don’t want to admit their insecurities in front of the world.

Yeah. But the problem in my opinion with using Liam as an example is that he's an alcoholic and was constantly drinking during the 1D era and after and never stayed sober for long, so his face is "bloated" for that reason and it's hard to say what his natural face shape would be without the alcohol. It's obvious that his "new" face is really extreme and too much to be natural, even IF he managed to stay sober for 3 months or longer (I don't follow him that closely anymore and am more focused on Harry and Louis' solo careers, so I don't know what Liam's current sobriety status is and I wouldn't necessarily trust his own words on it anyway). So whoever did whatever he got might has been lied to about his sobriety status or accepted the risk of his patient being intoxicated and possible side effects or complications that could happen because of that. Yikes. I would definitely avoid that person if I would want to get anything done. Liam looks similar to Harry now when it comes to his cheeks and it's really weird and creepy. It doesn't even look good on Harry when his cheeks get super prominent like that and he seems to avoid that from happening again... It's just weird... In my opinion if Liam really wants to get into acting he should prove first that he can stay sober for a year because I wouldn't trust him to remember his parts in a film script if he gets more than just a few lines. If I were a film producer I wouldn't want to have him working on set. He's a bit of a liability already and probably wouldn't be any less of a liability on a film set... 😐

@@Larry_Stylinson I respect your opinion, just wanted to clarify something real quick though and I only learned about this during the whole Johnny/Amber trial situation but I didn't know so maybe other people don't either. Originally in acting the actors had to remember their lines well, but nowadays it's more common for some actors to have someone who feeds the lines to them as they are on the script so that they don't have to memorize. I believe it's probably like an invisible earpiece that the actor wears which is connected to a small microphone that the line feeder uses to read the actor the line just before the actor repeats it.

"come back one day"? I mean, there's a reason why anime boys and kpop idols are popular amongst people who are attracted to men, especially nowadays. I may not be into really soft facial features (but I also am not really into chiseled men, I'm more about a dude's clothes/aesthetic in terms of physical appearance), but even I know that there's a reason why these things are popular. Some men should really think twice if they think that they need to change their features just to "get women* because there's honestly a type for everyone (and yes, even "creepy" people, hybristophilia exists after all) . ://

Id like to add that removing implants doesnt mean going back to one's old face- its a foreign object sitting on top of soft tissue/bone, as time goes on they will deteriorate, and the skin gets stretched according to the implant. Removing it means getting other procedures done to reverse that (of course it depends on how long the person had the implant, their genetics etc)

It's often assumed that women prefer square jawlines on men, but that's not necessarily true, or it's only true up to a point. For one thing, as you mentioned, Korean beauty standards favor a V-shaped jawline on both men and women, which means the preference for strong angularity isn't universal. What I found interesting, too, was reading that women tend to prefer boxier jawlines on men if they're looking for casual sex, but softer jawlines if they're looking for a boyfriend. From my experience, I'd say that past a certain point on the "slider," most women start to find square, masculinized features on men a bit intimidating.

Body Dysmorphia isn't discussed nearly enough, people are so afraid to admitting they have unhealthy and unrealistic standards over their own body. Not only trying to convince themselves but everyone else around them too, trying to make their "ideal" body in their own mind their reality. If they went into the opposite direction and just plainly stated how they have come to view their bodies in this warped and twisted way no one would actually bat an eye, in fact I can see a lot of support being sent over to them. But they imagine that owning up to something like this isn't the right move, instead having that jaw or face surgery will surely do the trick for them. As someone who suffers with Body Dysmorphia the ugly truth is that deep inside they will probably either be never satisfied with one surgery or be heavily disappointed and maybe even feel like they look worse because of it. It's an endless pit because they're treating their physical symptoms instead of the mental root cause of it all. I fully believe they could have the perfect body and they would still feel like there would be something missing, because the problem was never their body but the perception they hold over it. Just very sad.

Beauty standards for both men and women are just becoming bizarre. Don't get me started on aging for women in America. I am 39 and I am thinking about getting botox for my 40th birthday. (No one NEEDS it for cosmetic purposes, and I am fortunate that I have a youthful appearance.) It was a trend about 20 years ago for young women in their early 20's to get "preventative" botox. This has caused some weird facial situations... My personal belief is that good skincare and hydration go a long way. Spf always! Go slowly with changes, especially to the face. I don't judge anyone who has the money and wants to get some work done. Live your life, go off honey. If they like it, I love it. It might not be my cup of tea though.
@Wakka144

There is only one area where Botox is even a good idea, and that is the lines between your brows if you are unfortunate enough to have those form. They can make you look angry all the time. This was what the original purpose was for injecting Botox into the face. Also remember Botox is NOT the same thing as filler. As for your comment, you are spot on with hydration and sunscreen. Eating a healthy diet, staying away from sugar and other inflammatory foods, eat foods rich in antioxidants, get plenty of sleep, and have a good skincare regimen with cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing. Do not smoke, avoid alcohol, and age well.

A true example of male gaze would be the GigaChad meme. Female gaze would be someone like Jeremy Meeks or Damien Katar

Great video! One thing you didn't mention, and especially in Zac Effron's Baywatch body transformation case has been widely discussed, is how being "on gear" aka doing testosterone cycles, can have an impact on jawline development, and in general more pronounced masculine features. Hollywood is well known for putting actors on performance enhancing drugs, and especially male actors on full chemistry programs to get that superhero physique within the 3-6 months preparation for the role. Of course, many of them also get surgical procedures done, but a lot of the chiseled looks, huge upper bodies, defined abs and vascularity, as well as in some cases bloated/inflated looking bodies, are all due to steroids. In the past couple of years, that has become a lot more accessible to the general public, especially compared to plastic surgery. The same body standards are being pushed hard by fitness influencers on gear, claiming/selling "natural" body through fitness programs. (I highly recommend the videos of "more plates more dates", he goes into Hollywood actors as well).

You have to remember too, there is a rather long healing time for a lot of these surgeries. It is not like you get them done and a week later you are ready to go. I do think a lot of the “fast” transitions like you mentioned are steroid use.

This is so interesting coming from someone who had two jaw surgeries where a chin implant was placed. For most of my teens I felt like something was missing in terms of my looks which I’m glad I never went to a therapist to be mistakenly labeled as someone who couldn’t love themselves. Anyways what the surgeon did finally brought back my features into harmony which lined up with the pictures I found as s little girl. It’s like the surgery brought back a piece of myself that had been lost for so long. I couldn’t smile properly in my teens so I understand now the importance of all parts of the face and muscles working together. It even impacts the lymphatic system when the body detoxes. I just think it’s interesting how certain things can impact people in different ways.

zacs facial changes are quite likely caused (at least in part) from human growth hormone usage prepping for the iron claw. His physic got very big, very quickly. doesnt work for just muscles tho, works for everything it can, including the thickness of your skin. Makes your face look quite different different, and his face has changed in consistant ways to others who are known to have used hgh. this is something that gradually returns to your normal after you stop, so i can see zac starting to look like himself over time. you can actually look at conner megregor as another likely concurant example. He was pretty adimit about not being on peds during his fighting days, but since he isnt getting tested, he doesnt care anymore. last year or so he suddonly gained a lot of muscle despite still heavily partying, showed accellerated male pattern hair loss before he got plugs, was hella red, and his face changed a lot in a very similar way.

It’s insanely rare for a Hollywood actor or celebrity to transition from pretty boy heartthrob to masculine “chad”. the few that come to mind that made this transition successfully are brad Pitt, Henry cavill(google him when he was 20 and how pretty he looked), penn badgly, Tom cruise, and keaneu reeves. The first 2 I mentioned are probably the best examples of pretty boy to masculine leading man I’ve ever personally seen and I think that was the look that both Zac and Liam were trying to do but unfortunately lacked the natural genetics for that to transpire. I’ll throw Chris evans in their as one that transitioned pretty seemlessly from pretty boy to masculine leading man

What worries me most is people who may have too many surgeries to perfect their look, and the doctors who don't earn them of the consequences of having these surgeries. You can end up with paralysis or an infection that requires the removal of your implants and possibly the bone beneath, leaving you with less than you had before. A good plastic surgeon should first inform you of all the risks and then provide guidance to when enough is enough before you go too far and ruin your face and regret what you've done. Of course the best thing is to accept the way you were born but I realized some for some people it's that they hate the way they look so much they ate willing to go through the pain and risks to be able to accept themselves.

Their not naturally looking face seem so bizarre to me. Also, some of them look SO old. I just looked up Zac Efron's age and realize he is 35, but he looked like he added another 20 years on top of that 35. You have plenty of time to look old when you are old, I don't get why people try to look old while they can still benefit from a youthful face. Plastic surgery just goes overboard nowadays. Theres a procedure for EVERY single piece of our bodies. Nothing is safe and it’s ridiculous. Aren’t there procedures for the hands? Its too much.

I thought it was sad when then guy was like, "there's no way he'd get plastic surgery just to look like that!" That hurt MY feelings...like...we all know that he's lying about the plastic surgery but be ridiculed that your face looks bad when you tried to make it look good with the surgery....you can tell how embarrassed and awkward he felt...poor Zac...

Idk if this is jus a thing in English speaking countries or I'm just not in the group of people who care about beauty ideals cos all of this stuff is always new to me when I watch your videos. Only ppl who annoyed me abt good looks were my mom and the beauty technicians I've been to (dont go to them anymore tho cos the face stuff hurts a lot and I dont like it when people make me feel insecure about my acne😊)

I wish he’d stop saying that one direction was popular in the “early 2000s” when they were formed in 2010. Im not so old yet that one direction can be grouped in the same era as **NSYNC and Britney 🤣

idk why but the most shocking thing in this video is hearing Troy Bolton be called a “teenage heartthrob.” As someone who grew up watching all the HSM…….were……..were we supposed to have crushes on Troy?
