This sounds like something I've been doing my entire life, a kind of daydreaming. Sometimes I just daydream about stuff I'd like to happen, but at other times, I'm full on immersed in another world. I do this mainly when I'm working on a story, though, to get a feel for the world about which I'm writing and what the main character feels and thinks and so on and so forth and what have you. I've also done this occasionally when having a bad time of depression, but usually it's just when I'm working on a story.

when I was in middle school I went to an anime convention and my dad was our chaperone. He had never been to one and at one point he left us to do his own thing and was taking random pictures of cosplayers (with consent of course) and going to random panels with literally no idea what they were about. He was having a blast. He wanted to meet up for lunch so went to a place listed as a food place in the booklet. He chose a host club (based on ouran hs host club) Those poor cosplayers who had to deal with a random ass 60 year old man wandering into their host club worrying he was a creep. They asked him why he was there and he said he wanted food?? they were so relieved and my dad was so confused they gently let him know this probably wasn't the right place for him. When he told us about how he went to a weird food place where everyone seemed really nervous I burst out laughing and told him what a host club was. Mortified
