The healing powers of psychedelics are transforming the world of mental health treatment. At the forefront of research is Professor David Nutt, whose team at Imperial College London is using magic mushrooms in clinical trials to treat depression - and getting incredible results.
Humans love drugs. Every culture in human history has looked for ways to alter its consciousness. So where does this desire come from? And why are some drugs legal and others illegal? What is it about some drugs that make governments declare war on them?
In News on Drugs, writer JS Rafaeli chats to fellow drug nerds about their studies to tackle some of the biggest questions in the crazy world of mind-altering substances.

I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

I smoked cigarettes for 15+ years and smoked a pack a day for those last 5. I’ve been wanting to quit but never tried. One day I ate some shrooms and started laughing hysterically about how much it’s going to suck quitting. That night I quit cold turkey and never looked back. This was two years ago.

My processing and elimination of anger during departure from 8 years of nicotine was greatly aided by a handful of ketamine doses. Just like Alan Watts said, "when you get the message, hang up the phone." It's just too bad some phones are harder to hang up.

@@DJGive1 yeah, it's always interesting, and probably self enlightening what gets through for some but not for others. I've met several years daily cannabis users who've quite no problem after a single hit of Dmt. I've used cannabis for over a decade and I've used Dmt over a dozen times and I'm still as relatively dependent on cannabis regardless.

They are great, after a shoulder surgery I got some mushrooms. They helped more with the pain, didn't help my sleep though. Since then I have made drastic changes to my life, no alcohol or any drugs. Only use mushrooms and cannabis when really needed. Micro dosing helped immensely with implementing changes.

Tripping on mushrooms and self reflecting during meditation while tripping was the best thing I've ever done for my mental health and the fun I've had during the leisure trips will never be forgotten. As someone with an anxiety disorder and being on the spectrum of autism, psychedelic medicine has blown the doors wide open and allowed me to overcome negative thought patterns that once plagued my brain constantly. I feel love and empathy even stronger than ever before but without resulting in so much sadness when things go wrong, I just overcome it and move on. I can now more deeply understand what it means to simply exist and observe the universe as it actually is without an overactive ego impeding my ability to do so. We have been robbed of countless years of potential progress but now is finally the time to wake up and acknowledge reality for what it really is, no matter the situation.

LSD abd mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life..I became a better version of myself. This experience gave me a lot of confidence about myself and a bunch of bad thought/behaviour pattern were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands alot..it gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip. The main reason for the trip was my severe Depression and it definitely helped me. Before all I could do was lay in bed, now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before.

Mindmed is a company working on some of this psychedelic research, at the university of Basel Switzerland where Hoffman originally created LSD, as well as other studies elsewhere. Compass Pathways is another company who are focusing on mushroom therapy. The mental health industry is about to evolve for the better and really take off in the next 5-10 years.

I was very lucky to have been introduced to shrooms by my mates in College. I had a whole camping trip in Rocky Mountain National Park and was able to trip out there. Literally the most beautiful human experience I've had in my life. To this day I look back and think about how I came out a different happy person. Shrooms literally saved my life from depression and the toxicity from my conditioned upbringing.

I went and did an ayaquasca ceromony and also microdosed magic mushrooms for 2 months. My whole life has changed, everything about it for the better. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. Everyone is mentally ill according to dsm5. Just cuz someone tells u u r mentally ill doesn't mean u r. If u believe u have mental problems not based on what someone else told u, u should try to fix them. But drugs are not the answer. If u think drugs help and want to use them your body your choice. Legalize drugs. Ban forced and coerced drugging. Ban mandatory treatment. drugs can not control your mind and make u think any way. U have free will. Drugs can't stop depression, depression is a choice. Drugs might make u feel better phsyciallly but they r not alive they don't have a soul and u r not a robot for drugs to make u think a certian way. Take proper care of your phsycial health and lower stress and try to improve your situation if u r depressed, maybe make friends and don't let fear hold u back from doing what u want. It becomes impossible to enjoy anything while not stoned. (At least for me) I get some rough stomach pain sometimes and it goes away instantly after I smoke just a bowl. This really shows the power of rumination. In Buddhism, rumination(as I understand it) is called meditation, or any repeated thinking. This includes but is not limited to sitting cross-legged and calming the mind. We are always meditating on something, and the Buddha taught to harness the power of meditation and repeat positive thinking. He taught via the 4 Noble Truths that positive thinking; renunciation, compassion, faith, love and wisdom is the cause of happiness. The psilocybin study showed that disrupting negative meditations eases suffering. To maintain this benefit, one needs to watch their mind to catch themselves when they start a negative meditation, and turn it around. Lets do this!

i want to write about this properly in an article but get so excited about psychedelics for anorexia treatment that i have to share my story here too, sorry 😅: i was diagnosed with anorexia aged 15 following a major traumatic incident (but can trace disordered eating back to as young as 6 years old). i spent months inpatient, saw specialists - none of it worked. i found things like ballet, cooking, reading etc to be helpful sometimes for a few months but i'd always relapse into either restrictive anorexia or binging/purging and then cycle between the two states. my stomach is destroyed from laxatives, i almost died on a number of occasions, it still didn't stop me. i took a double dose of 2cb at a really lovely festival aged 22 and it just clicked. "why am i doing this to myself? i'm a beautiful person" - the most simple thing and yet it felt like a revelation. the next day i woke up and ate normally, and the next day and so on - it's been 4 years and i'm STILL in remission. it's crazy. i never thought my life could be like this, where food doesn't dominate my every thought. i hope one day to run psychedelic retreats for people with eating disorders, because it's truly changed my life.

The most impressive thing is that LSD and Psylocibin can actually really cure mental illness like PTSD and Generalized Anxiety. Also it can be very useful to depression and Bipolar Disorder, as long with therapy.

Drugs can't cure it as being stressed out and having anxiety and depression... is a choice and drugs can't override your freewill. They might make u feel phsyciallly better. Legalize drugs. Ban forced and coerced drugging. What may help many with depression is taking care of your phsycial health, reducing stress, making friends, getting something to do that u enjoy such as a job u like and hobbies u like, trying to improve your life and making the world a better place, helping others, feeling your life has purpose and your making a positive difference, and being happy with yourself for doing what u think is right and not letting fear hold u back.

This experience has nothing in common with any other conventional treatments. You owe it to yourself to try psychedelics. My advice is to find the johns hopkins psychedelics for depression playlist and listen to it in its entirety. The stronger the dose the better in my opinion. Navigating life sick is way worse than one intense night.

The best way I have found to explain psychedelic therapy to people is that your brain is like an engine, its hard as hell to work on while its running. Psychedelics pretty much stop the engine so it can be worked on. There are so many personal bias's that people have that prevent them from being able to understand how to fix a mental situation they are dealing with, all psychedelics is remove those so you can look at a situation from a neutral perspective and come to terms with it.

How about micro dosing on a regular basis to assist people with depression ocd adhd etcetera?
@ClayMann
@ClayMann 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it works like that. The idea if you take a very large dose once. Micro dosing doesn't cause any kind of ego death and extreme mental changes that break you out of repetitive doom thinking. The one big dose does do that. Anyone that tells you that micro dosing is a mental health aid is talking from either their own experience or from seeing others benefit but that's not enough as way more people might have the story that it made things worse. In fact you can search on suicides that happen with people who were known to be micro dosing and that's alarming. Bottom line, if its not happening in a respected clinic with trained people, its probably best avoided.

I have ptsd with sides of anxiety and depression. The prescription stuff was unappealing for me based on my and my therapists research, so I acquired some mushrooms and duplicated the protocols used in some of the clinical trials as closely as I was able to and used them (no therapist obviously, but therapy the next day). I did two sessions about two weeks apart the first time - and they were a huge help. It was like a switch had been flicked in my brain and I went from knowing to believing, and a lot of the old garbage just wasn't so important anymore. I find that I seem to get some back slide and need to repeat the process once or twice a year. I have zero desire to use them so no addiction and I don't want other drugs now - even alcohol is just whatever. Not needed. Not wanted. I wish that this kind of option was more available for people who aren't the DIY sort and I'd love safe access to some of the other substances of this type to see what benefits they have. Making this class of meds illegal was ridiculously political, keeping them illegal should be a crime against humanity. So many people have died of their demons and I think that these meds could have prevented a lot of those deaths.

Mushrooms work amazing, just protip. Things turn sour, don't freak out. Just breathe. You will get through it. And I think that learning THIS is one of many ways it can work as a theapory. If you can get over that feeling, that can be translated over to when you are depressed/angry/sad/etc. You can get through it and anything. Just breathe and give a minute.

Thank you for taking the time to share this simple yet profound observation. IMHO, you are absolutely correct. And how mind-blowing to consider, even for a moment, that this might be by design. What would be the philosophical ramifications of that, in terms of the nature of consciousness? Imagine that this effect was a purposeful attempt by a plant (!!) (a fungus in this case) to create safe containers of make-believe "learning opportunities" for human beings to safely practice uncomfortable cognitive skills, that would promote the forward evolution of our species over generations of time?

I suffered debilitating anxiety last years and finally starting mushrooms ( micro and some macro doses ) even a dose close to 1 gram...and microdosing for a month, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I started to like living again. I tried about a million different things...This is like turning the electricity up in your brain and it rearranges neural pathways, breaks bad pathways but you need to work on your brain. Give it "intention" , take your time. PLS go to reddit, read for few days or weeks, prepare mentally, prepare music, meditate, prepare your setting, be in a good mindset ( you might be anxious thats perfectly normal, but you need to surrender to the experience, dont fight it. )
