As a Keralite I can confirm that Vijay And Allu arjun have more fan base here than their contemporaries from their own industries, thats .not started from recently but from the starting of their career.Vijay touched his peak stardom during pokkiri, Thuppaki and now Leo. I still remember watching thullatha manavum thullum as a kid and believed that j was watching a malayalam movie and he is a malayalam actor like kunjako boban.Allu arjun at the same time had a crazy fan following during his second film happy and it reached at its peak during Arya 2 now he is a Pan India star. We watched their growth very closely and been part of it❤

Vijay planned his career better after he had a string of movies which did not do well. He first started with Kaavalan and then from Thuppaki, he got a makeover of his looks and also movies which came up to him. Though few did not work well, many of the others were hits. I would cite THERI as a very good example of a commercial movie which catered to all age groups and Audiences. Kaththi was a well made commercial movie which had good music and Stunts which synced well within the context of the movie. Vijay playing a grey shade character and transforming himself to become the flag bearer for the farmers was the highlight of the movie. Theri had scenes which all age group people would connect to and also relate themselves somewhere to it.

Kid, a flop movie called a vettaikaran had a huge opening. I was working during that in Kerala, when I asked the same question to my malayalee colleagues and they told that from their childhood, they are watching his songs and Masala movies. Because it was impossible to produce malayalam movies that scale during that due to trade, market etc, along with that more than 70% can understand Tamil. Your answer probably your own experience that you started follow him from kaavalan when you were a kid!

But in TN after Pokkiri till Kaavalan, Vijay's movies did not yield the expected results and hence for many Kaavalan felt like the movie which put Vijay back on track followed by many hit movies. I still remember watching Thirupachi FDFS here in Chennai and it was a festive experience inside the theatre

because he makes colorful my childhood Gilli was my first Tamil film then nonstop other reason his dance moves are sensational learn a lot from his movies....also Tamil is more similar to Malayalam....but to be honest at that time he does not have as much of girls audience now he has more than boys...

Keralites have always been fan of good films- realistic dramas or mass action entertainers. I remember the days of Padayappa and Avvai Shanmughi when the relatives and neighbours who had watched them had tonnes to speak after they return from the show. Anniyan wave was phenomenal. Patients from Trivandrum Ayurveda College would jump out to nearby Dhanya theatre and watch Anniyan after fighting in ticket counter. Pokkiri had another crazy fanbase. Athulya theatre of SL Theatre Complex (Now Aries Plex) that played Pokkiri never had an empty seat for almost 50-60 days even with other film releases. Vijay and Allu grabbed the seats of young energetic romantic heroes that does solid action films. Kunjacko boban who had that position in late 90s took a hiatus from films and Prithviraj didn't get enough entertaining films. Mohanlal and Mammootty either did a solid drama that gained them state and national awards or a massy action/ comedy films but they couldn't be relate to the youth of the state. Vijay started his journey long back with Kamal and Rajni wave in Kerala. Vikram, Surya and Allu joined later.
