I’m surprised you didn’t mention Tumblr AT ALL. Tumblr really elevated the mood board aesthetic which bleed onto the early days of Instagram, some pages I would find on tumblr made me feel like I was reading some magazine. Tumblr and VSCO really paved the way lol

One of the best things about Tumblr was that so much content was repeatedly reshared. There wasn't so much focus on social engagement from a single account, so it freed users from chasing an algorithm for growth. In many ways, it was one of the purest forms of social media because you could share anything that interests you or catches your eye. It was much less curated or polished than Mood Board accounts on Instagram are today. Not to mention, Tumblr is perhaps the originator of the "fit pic" and helped street style take off in 2012 - 2013.

I'm skeptical of mood boards turned clothing brands. There is certainly value in curating beautiful, cohesive imagery. However, they all seem to struggle with expressing original ideas. JJJJound is often cited as the biggest success story, but is he really doing anything we'll be talking about in 10 years? New Balance collabs and hoodies ain't gonna make a dent in the industry. Same with Sporty and Rich. Screen printed athleisure clothes ain't enough. Anyways, don't want to sound too cynical, but it's annoying seeing basic clothes selling out off hype and marketing while tons of bold, inventive, talented designers toil in obscurity.

Clothing wise meh probably not going to be talking bout him 10 years from now, but there’s also not THAT much going on in fashion that people will be talking about 10 years from now. aside from the clothing stuff he’s doing now jjjjjound still deserves his flowers, I wouldn’t go as far to say he was tumblr before tumblr but his site/blog was carefully curated images and in a way was one of the first “mood board” pages in a digital space. Plus his involvement in been trill and Ye whole crew kinda separate him from the rest of the sporty+rich, hidden ny types in my eyes

@@Dwadeisthebest12345 I agree he's definitely been a pioneer of sorts in popularizing digital mood boards and frankly most his sneaker collabs are fire. There's very few designers who we'll be talking about in 10 years, but I'd like to at least see the effort. He might not have the design skills, but why not team up with a young designer who he vibes with and try to create something unique together? Tote bags and tshirts are easier to sell (and make $$$), but I'm just waiting for an influencer to really go for it and put out a proper fashion brand.

@@DrewJoiner it’s been a bit but yes, the best times to go are during fiesta and in December from my experience. I should probably visit the river walk again now that I think of it. Side note: I know you’ve touched on bootlegs in the past, I would love to see a “rise of bootlegs” video in a similar format because of the popularity of them nowadays and how major companies have responded to their products being subject to bootlegs. I think it would make for an interesting video as well as spark discussion

My initial thoughts of moodboards: As someone who wants to work in the footwear industry from a design perspective, I struggle with coming up with moodboards as sometimes it’s harder to see the bigger picture instead of the exact message I’m trying to get across.

I find that mood boards help encapsulate what I’m into and what I’m feeling at that point in time. I’ve never been good with words but certain pics help express myself especially when I make my own mood boards. It hella snows where I live and can drop to -40C.

Another thought provoking, banger video bro. I love how you started discussing magazines and such, I used to LOVE looking through magazines as a kid for creative inspiration. I even used to do that with video game manuals and cut out all the stuff I liked and made cards and collages with them. I live out in NJ and it's always snowing out here during the winter. I have a strong love/hate relationship with it. Dealing with it is a chore but the new weather is an opportunity to dress differently, and the snow looks gorgeous too. Sucks that it's so intrusive though. When there's too much snow, everything is closed up; but when it's hella hot out everything is still open. You never win with snow. 😭

Personally I love mood boards. Sometimes pictures speak louder than words. I see social media as two things for me which is information and inspiration. With the numerous mood boards out there like on IG I am shown things I never knew about and begin to learn about these things (information). I am also shown things I like and want to obtain whether it be clothing, dream house, cars etc. So yeah mood boards are amazing and here to stay.

It's full circle. Moodboards need branding and brands need moodboard. But making a moodboard page is not as same as curating; posting images is not a curating. Edit: I mean it's all comes down to market certain "taste" to mass audience. Creating an imagery of certain aesthetics as shallow as possible. Not telling something deep/worthwhile as someone does with curating.
