@Colorado_Native Жыл бұрын
@@289Mustang67 True, go read the COPS-R1134 report by the DOJ. They DOJ suggests that PITs should not be done above 35mph because of the energy. A car going 10 mph has 100 units of energy. If a car is going 35mph it has 1,225 units of energy. You would think a car going 70 mph would have twice the energy, right? But energy squares at the rate of speed. So, a car going 70 mph actually has 4900 units of energy, so it actually has four times the energy. A car going 105 mph has 11,025 units of energy, or about nine times the energy of a 35 mph car even though it is only traveling three times faster. The youtube geniuses don't understand the risks or dangers of this. Is chasing someone putting several lives in danger (many of those innocent) really worth it. An Arkansas man was recently killed when he was stopped in a PIT at 126mph, nearly crashing into an oncoming car. His crime? Shoplifting. Should he have stopped? By all means. The California Highway Patrol doesn't allow PITs above 35mph. Hundreds of people have been injured. The agencies don't report these statistics, so there are no national statistics. Would we solve bank robberies by blasting away with no real regard? I don't think so. Would you fly on an airliner that said, "Well, we got nine of ten aircraft down safely."? Why should law enforcement be allowed to put innocent citizens' lives at risk, especially when they know the license number, etc.? The CHP has implemented way better policies and procedures. I know a lot of fans of PIT maneuvers will spam me, but they won't do any real research. Thanks for the reply.

Why doesn't every police department have the grappler system?
@thisisnotmyrealname9049 Жыл бұрын
It’s being used in over 30 states now. They get used more than most people realize, we just don’t hear about most instances. The problem is that not every cruiser has one so they have to be called in to join the chase. In this case, the officer was clearly in life threatening danger from the slow moving pregnant woman with hazards on trying to pull over, so he needed to put an immediate stop to this reckless chase because it was putting the lives of him and possibly hundreds of innocent civilians at risk. Can you imagine what would have happened if he waited even one more minute before he heroically put a stop to this?
@coleman484011 ай бұрын
Because I did not quite care to read the other persons long winded essay (no offense to them) it also comes down to budgets and funding. One grappler may not be expensive from most departments but going through the process of retrofitting squad cars, taking them out of service, and all that stuff can elevate the cost tremendously versus simply using the push bumper to its fullest capability.
@davidhelfrich2511 Жыл бұрын
They should look into the Grappler system. $5000.00 initially cost and $400.00 replacement net. Spending that much on wrecked patrol car,injuries and lawsuits. That less endangerment to everyone.

Silly question: Who of you can recall a road runner cartoon where Wylie Coyote built a brick wall that popped up out of the ground, across a road? Now, why is it not possible to set up spike strips in a similar manner? Have them spread across the State on arterial roads, freeways and secondary roads, and have them activated by central control, or an officer on site? They are saying that they are not able to get in front of a suspect that is fleeing, as they do not know where they are going. Well, set up the freeways, off ramps and other road networks with this system, and take the tyres out of the fleeing vehicle! The other thing that needs to be borne in mind is that the public does have a DUTY OF CARE towards the officer. The officers are their own worst enemies with some of the things that they do. One of the most stupid things that is done is standing between the two stopped vehicles. 4 police officers were killed in Victoria, Australia, in April 2020 when a semi trailer ran into the back of one enforcement vehicle, then slamming that into a second enforcement vehicle and into the stopped car. If on a freeway with cement on both sides, I will not stop, as that is a hazard to both me and the officer. Where there is a grass verge on the right; or, an open median strip where one can stop behind a W rail or a wire barrier, that is where I would be looking to stop. I have seen too many "accidents" where a vehicle has run into either the back of the enforcement vehicle, or, taken the stopped vehicle out. It is too easy to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. You can not recover from death.

Unless its a known felon with guns as was the case in this story, they are putting the public in incredible danger by having sometimes several cops doing over 130 mph meaning you not only have not only the perp speeding, but the cops speeding and risking all kinds of lives. Forget the times when they've done PITs on cars with kids inside....ASP is off the hook with this shit and they need to reign it in...

The first pit was totally uncalled for, what an Idiot cop, he doesn't even know the law. Follow a car for two minutes at 15mph under the speed limit and then pit them, what an a-hole. Some people should be Ice cream truck drivers not policemen. I hope she sued the hell out of them and got millions.
@Matthew-Anthony Жыл бұрын
Police officers pursuing fleeing motorists is almost always justified. However, sentencing drivers to prison for 3 to 6 years if/when they get caught is overkill. Car chases are very dangerous, but that much time is excessive.

If the penalty is stiff enough, maybe ppl will stop running from the police. Some do it just to see if they can evade ASP (aka Blacked out Charger).

The only complaint I have is about the first encounter. When you do what the law has stated in the law book and they still violate your rights.. someone said in the the comments she had plenty of room . She did not I used to work the freeway cleanup on caltrans in California those narrow roadway to even get a work crew on there you need two trucks to block the traffic safely . Let alone have a lone officer approach a car safely
@pdean5616 Жыл бұрын
They weren't in californis and ASP officers have plenty of left and right side emergency lane to travel at 120mph so stopping in one of those is a no brainer although the law clearly states to pull to the right.

The problem is, these Arkansas police are pitting vehicles as seen in some cases at over 100mph, a petty crime shoplifters had their mother die, then can be seen the officer boasting about it, there are so many reasons to stop the so called pit manoeuvre and if trooper performs such, he should be made accountable without immunity. The way the cop went on after he pitted a young lady pregnant at the time was sickening, I couldn’t listen to him hence didn’t view the whole incident.

The first city’s revised policy was well worded, and by that I mean strategically to be able to deny management responsibility and roll onto on the officer where beneficial. Eliminating all qualified immunity is as stupid as it being blanket policy, police are absolutely vital to our society and by making their profession much more liable than it already will deter people from being able to fill the role since the risk would likely be more than the reward. They are private citizens who shouldn’t be expected to have to over extend themselves to perform their duties. This was a case of poor training and execution though. She as a civilian did a much better job than the cop or the department

And the nature of the crime involving a vehicle automatically creates exigency in many cases. That’s why officers can execute probable cause arrests on traffic stops without a warrant. Fleeing, potential evidence disappearing because it’s in a vehicle and danger to the public all create exigency and are all inherent to most police pursuits. So the statement doesn’t appear to actually change anything at all. It just names a special condition that already existed

I support the use of pits but after watching hundreds of Arkansas chases here on youtube, there has got to be some better discretion in their implementation. You cannot say these are done in the interests of public safety, when they are done in busy highway traffic, especially noting the video of the trooper flying across the median into oncoming lanes after pitting that truck. Also the video of the maroon Crown Vic being pitted that wasnt really speeding and had several children in the back of the car.

Not that I was born with it but if you have xray vision or if you have telepathy then maybe you should join the force. In regards to the maroon crown vic you couldn't see the kids due to the tint.

Yeah my support for their pit maneuvers ended with one of the troopers going 120+ in an out of traffic in the middle of night chasing a guy who was gone, and I mean gooonnne. Had not seen the car in like 5 minutes but is still flying 120 through cars.

Just gonna go ahead and respond to the whole thread here. Remember: For every 1 PIT that goes wrong, there's 100 others that go right and prevent injury and death to the innocent. For the minivan: The PIT was a bad call, but there's no possible way he could know who is occupying the vehicle. He's not telepathic. 14mph over the limit is speeding, so I don't know where this "wasnt really speeding" is coming from. For the PIT into oncoming traffic: Sometimes the vehicle being PIT'd can overcome the force of the attempt (especially with larger and more powerful trucks). I'm not an expert on high-speed pursuit tactics, but it appears the trooper did not apply enough lateral force to destabilize the truck, so the truck just sort of veered and took the trooper with him. When this happens, troopers will often slam on the brakes before they're forced into a barrier or off the road. Why this trooper didn't do that, I don't know. For the trooper who lost the suspect but kept pursuing: Yeah, that was a bad call, but a couple of bad incidents shouldn't be a justification for discontinuing a generally successful practice without a better alternative. I was given a single fish sandwich when I ordered a double at McDonald's, but that doesn't mean I'm going to force them to stop serving fish sandwiches. (Probably a bad comparison, but my life isn't exciting enough to have a good one)

Because the cop knew she was pregnant….. go watch all the chase videos. One of the first things these people do is throw on their flashers to try and deceive a cop to let them keep running. Feeling safe and having somewhere to actually pull over are 2 different things. If she was really concerned about safety why was she doing almost 15 over the speed limit? She’s just trying to use being pregnant as an excuse. Why didn’t she begin stopping when she saw him moving in on her? But sure let’s point our fingers at the cop like always.

@@User_1dashzero You must not watch enough police chases. I've seen plenty of videos where a suspect, at some arbitrary point during the pursuit, turns on their hazards and continues to flee. I can't say I agree with the accusations from the OP, though. The law's a bit muddy as to what a "safe place" to pull over means.
@loosemoose9799 Жыл бұрын
You apparently aren't familiar with that section of the interstate. I am and there is no safe place to pull over. It is not unusual for traffic on that road to be 10 to 15 over the limit. The Arkansas drivers manual states that a turn signal and or flashers should be activated, vehicle slowed and then pull over when a safe place is found. It is not safe to pull over in that section of highway where the pit was used. The cop violated the rule that she was following.

The ASP should in my opinion at least look at 'The Grappler' to more safely end pursuits. From all I have read it is safer, less expensive as they are made to be replaced with a new one within hours vs. repair/replace patrol cars, and lowers the possibility of lawsuits due to PIT/TVIs gone bad. Troopers use them effectively here in AZ.
@terenceporter9786 Жыл бұрын
Its the cross fire from the PIT and they don't have training on the gravity playing out... The moment they have a clear shot to PIT, they don't look down the road as to where the force of gravity plays out. Just because you have a chance to PIT, does not mean you don't check the surroundings first. Speed is not wind in your face, its the amount of ground your covering. All crashes happen at the same rate of time, but the difference is how much ground your covering and spitting out behind you.

I actually had an IDIO TH MORON COP threaten me for NOT STOPPING RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF HEAVY TRAFFIC IN AN ACTIVE DRIVING LANE where there was no shoulder /no safe place to pull over. She was looking for a safe place to stop, while moving at a very controlled and non-aggressive speed. Generalising a situation rarely brings clarity, even more rarely brings justice. I hope this lady received full compensation for the results of the vehicular assault of which she was the victim. In the case of a person driving like a maniac for several miles, a person who was by their actions showing a clear intent to avoid being liable for a traffic violation or worse I would concur, but with the caveat that there could be extenuating circumstances even in such a case. ASP officers apply an uncompromising policy. Somewhere in their chain of command there must be acceptance of responsibility and liability when that policy produces aberrant results. This was clearly the case here. Admitting liability when a decision was unwarranted does not weaken the case in favour of decisions that are warranted. Police decisions are not protected from judgement and blame. Only the weak refuse to accept responsibility for their errors. ASP showed a troubling sign of weakness when they did not swiftly accept that they got this one wrong.
