Within the last week I finished both, “The light of the Jedi” and “The Rising Storm.” These are admittedly the first books I’ve independently decided to read, since High school, and my goodness I’m glad I started my reading journey with these. “The Rising Storm, was a fun ride. I cannot wait for what comes next!

Star with Light of the Jedi. I would then recommend Into the Dark before reading Rising Storm, only because it explains where the Drenger came from. You don't have to read the comics, since the book does a pretty good job of explaining why the comics were so important. But as far as I've read, they aren't really explaining the Drenger (because the galaxy doesn't really know where they came from yet).

I didn't truly enjoy Light of the Jedi until the final 100 pages or so. I struggle with books that are more about the grand story than about characters and their development. I will say as someone who's only read light of the jedi and none of the other stuff yet, the beginning of this one has been really confusing so far. Like the drengir are just kinda there, they didn't really give any context, so if I hadn't watched your videos about the comics and the other books and what not, I would have no idea what's going on. I'm only in the first few chapters but I'm definitely feeling like I should've read more of the other content, I assumed that the "main" book series would be able to stand alone but I guess not, idk we'll see. So far in the book, I'm just really feeling like I should've read the comics first too to get the whole context of the story

Sadly, I was kind of disappointed by this. There's a LOT of action going on without moving the plot forward and the way Scott writes action doesn't appear to be very appealing to me. The ending chapters were indeed more impactful, but to me, they didn't make up for half the book of winding about itself in a whirlwind.
@Dass_Jennir
@Dass_Jennir 3 жыл бұрын
I kinda agree, as a Marchion Ro fan, it pained me how he is missing during the whole Fair fallout. Especially after featuring so prominently in the beginning. But I have to admit that left room for Pan and Dee to shine and get the time they didn’t get in LOTJ for me to like them more as I do now. Also, those final chapters on Gyzar definitely made up as well. Just hoped we got a couple more chapters with Loden and Marchion between the never ending Valo build up, we only got one! Still the book has left me devastated after just finishing it, so it has definitely done its job.
@artfact2
@artfact2 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dass_Jennir Yes, Roh was one of the few things moving the plot forward and he was absent for most of the time. I appreciated Dee and Pans expansions; the Nihil politicing was mostly effective. But I hardly felt any emotional immersion in the other characters this time in large part due to the writing style and overwhelming ammount of action. I'm glad the ending was impactful and worth it to you, to me it stopped right at the moment of things moving forward. I am very glad Gray is writing the next book an still have high hopes for the project; just too bad Scotts writing style is not for me. Of course, a book doesn't have to be plotdriven and, with Alex's help, I see the character studies it contains, but in that case it is not nearly in-depth or well written enough for me. So sad.(edited to remove spoilers)
@Dass_Jennir
@Dass_Jennir 3 жыл бұрын
@@artfact2 yeah, disappointing is a strong word to me (especially in this project which has been my favorite thing to come out since Disney has the license), so I wouldn’t say it was the case here, but I would be lying if I didn’t say I got pissed at times when we would get chapters with Kipp and Jom instead of ones with Loden and Ro for example. I’m sure this will be a much better read the second time knowing how everything pans out. You are also spot on with the different writing style, I read LOTJ again before jumping to TRS and Soule definitely spoiled me with his (imo) flawless pacing and passionate prose.

@Lr.Laecro.Lirus3445
@Lr.Laecro.Lirus3445 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I really have to disagree on this one. While the first 80 pages looked promising, after that I kinda lost it. Here are my main criticisms for the book, because sadly, I couldn't had as much of a blast as other did. 1. Weak descriptions The main location was already not interesting in concept, since I'm not a fan of fairs. And added to it, there were literally no descriptions of how the Fair and Valo in general even look like. In one of the little children's book, Valo was depicted as a place with buildings, that have golden cupples and some of the buildings are more quadrangular-shaped with blue tones, sorrounded by vendors with blue market roofs over their booths. Why did the book lacked any of this at literally any time? 2. Too much singular plotlines There were to many characters or plotlines to even keep up with and I forgot at least 60% of them. 3. Too much forced alien-diversity Look, I really love alien-diversity, really. However the way it was written just felt like Scott's desperate attempt to cram in as much alien-characters as he possibly can. Often the choices were very questionable, because a lot of times, these aliens only appeared like once or so in the entire franchise. By far the worst character was Quin Amarant. They put him into some sort of jedi-artifact exhibition. Then he gets knocked out, captured and then killed, because he didn't know, he had a tracker on his ship. Wasted character and a waste for his species. 4. Mostly dull sets The sets weren't great either. It was either in space/sky, the place was full of green gas, it was a corridor on a medicine ship or in a walker. And the last part wasn't great either. Just a barren rainy world with nothing to offer. 5. However, I really liked Ty Yorricks story the most, made me wish she was the main character of the book. All-in-all not a great read. Light of the Jedi was a great book, but Cavan Scott really should stick to making comics, because there it would've worked way better. However I'm really happy that many people like this book so much. Have a good day, folks!

Well, if High Respublic jedi are so nice and stuff, how come Yoda turned out to be the way he is? Wasn't he around the whole time?

we’ll probably find out why in the acolyte or another source. i have a feeling the jedi shift this specific belief due to events during the high republic

you think Yoda isn't nice?
@over9000lord

@@goodmind4940 He sure wasn't - he was often cruel, blind to the sith treat and he basically lead the order to its downfall. And it didn't teach him much, to be honest: 20 years later he asked Luke to murder his own dad. And the only way Luke was actually able to prevail over the emperor was by defying Yoda's instructions.

@@over9000lord "murder his own dad" you say that as if his dad wasn't DIRECTLY responsible for 100,000 of innocent deaths, babies etc. I've heard yoda being criticized for his failure to stop the fall of the Republic but I've never heard someone say that yoda wasn't nice 😂
@over9000lord
@over9000lord 3 жыл бұрын
@@apomtaylor8054 true! Anakin was guilty of a lot. Yet Yoda didn't want to right his wrongs, he just wanted him dead. It was Luke who offered Anakin redemption and defied Yoda doing so. And it was the only way to win, really: had he killed Vader, Palpatine would have broken or destroyed him. In fact, this is exactly what Palps wanted Luke to do. So, as you can see, even after more than 20 years in exile Yoda was still blind - he just kept playing into the emperor's hands.

Unfortunately, I disagree. I didn’t like this one. I thought Light of the Jedi & Into the Dark were okay. I thought this was poorly written. The first half was too much exposition and just plain boring. The middle part with the big battle and conflict with the Nihil was the best part and reasonably exciting. I found the end confusing and disappointing. It is fun when an author introduces new characters, settings and technologies, but this was all very scattershot. It was difficult to keep track of who the various characters are. It felt like a comic book with just the superficial details in the text, but at least in the comics you have visual cues to tell people apart. I just finished a 3 year project to read the whole 19 book New Jedi Order saga. I miss the coherence, drama and gravitas of that series. There is a plot line of should the Jedi be the Republic policemen versus should the Republic have their own standing army? It felt very repetitive of the same issue during the prequels, without any thing novel or different. I appreciate that they’re trying to move into new territory, but this didn’t do it for me. PS the new Thrawn books are great.
