I used to watch this every Christmas on HBO growing up. It was Emmet Otter at Xmas and The Worst Witch with Fairuza Balk and Tim Curry on Halloween. HBO was fantastic for kids programming growing up in the 80’s.

I remember seeing it once on Nick in the 90s. It always stuck with me. It was pretty much a Gift of the Magi type story. I think they were hired to play at the restaurant at the end.

The version of Emmett Otter that's currently on DVD is slightly different from when it aired on HBO. In particular, if you recall,there was a guy who went on before Emmett's band and he played the song that they were going to play which promoted them to quickly come up with another song, well, I remember on HBO, that the guy who sang their barbeque song was awarded second place which adds even more burning alcohol to their wounds. That special kept it real and it means more when you're grown and watching it.

Someone just recently covered the creation of this Christmas special. It is based on a children's book and Henson wanted the characters to look similar to the way they were drawn in the book. I'm not sure if the Nightmare Band was in the book since I never read it, but it was quite a technological feat with the inventions of the animatronics and filming to capture the motion of the water and puppets being operated by sensors.
