This duel.... Probably the most infuriating part is that Aoi/ Skye (Blue Girl/Gal) could have easily won, and say at the end "I won't take your Ignis away... BUT you will take us to where are you going instead". That way the story doesn't end immediately, and you keep Emma and Skye in the plot, even if only as spectators of what they will see with Windy and Bohman
@dancostello4872Күн бұрын
Yes, I wanted something like this to happen! Just because a duel has stakes going into it doesn't mean they have to be strictly adhered to - someone winning a [bet/wager/agreement] but then moving the goalposts to suit them is quite a common trope in media, and if executed correctly is usually for the better. It would admittedly be hard to write because Aoi's primary objective was just obtaining an Ignis for Akira, so if we did rewrite the duel so she wins, we'd also need a scenario where she intentionally goes against her original plan and doesn't take Flame in favour of a more preferable alternative. Or you just press the 'plot device' button and have Kusanagi pull a fast one and give Soulburner an emergency logout before Aoi can steal Flame. My first idea was having Aoi win but then offer Soulburner a deal - she won't take Flame if he leads her to Playmaker so she can take Ai instead (as she also wants her runback from the S1 duel and prove that she can defeat Playmaker); Soulburner would agree, not remotely feeling like he's betraying Playmaker, because he knows full well that she won't win. Either way, it would have had more narrative weight later on because when Go reveals Earth's death at the hands of SOLTech, Aoi would realise that had she taken Flame to Akira like she initially planned, she'd have sentenced him to the same fate.

imo would have been more fun if Skye did take the Ignis, only for her brother to tell her not to let anyone know cause SOL tech would just kill him, and have her learn a little more about the Ignis from Flame, while Theo gets some character development, before they Duel again so he can get her back. Really was not a fan of 'Lost Incident guys are just the best... ignore Spectre he's weak.' Theo didn't have much character growth and it put down season 1 gang a lot to just have Theo show up and beat everyone and become Yusaku's main ally while Skye got completely shut out until Aqua showed up.

I think the most frustrating part of this duel is the fact Soulburner had cards that specifically countered Blue Girl's deck and combos, and was already on a pretty big win streak. He didn't NEED the win from a narrative perspective. Furthermore, Aoi has some of the more difficult duels in the show (Prototype B and the one Knight of Hanoi she duels having counters to her burn strategies, her duel against Specter, and now this loss against Soulburner) To her credit, she does go toe to toe with two of the series main antagonists as Blue Maiden and holds her own fairly well.

There's a few more things worth pointing out here as well There was no need to link off both Lycoris *and* the token for Holly Angel just to fuse for Sweet Guitar. She could have only used the token in order to summon Bloom (since Bloom requires a Level 2 or lower Trickstar), which means one less wasted card AND means there's one more name in GY for Bella Madonna instead of just sending a token to the abyss. Obviously, this is a shaky argument to make, but one nonetheless. If she has access to all Trickstar cards that were currently out in the OCG, then Trickstar Foxglove Witch would be in her Extra Deck, which is a Link-3 requiring 2+ Fairies. She could have made it with Divaridis with... let's say she uses the Bloom on the previous scenario. Foxglove burns on summon for each card the opponent controls, which is Heatleo and Gate of Fire, -400. Soulburner 900 -> 500LP. One more name in GY, Bella Madonna kills anyway. Let's say we just need the battle phase! Judai said duels are all about fighting, after all. Use her skill, mill whatever, add Lilybell to hand, special summon. The skill does not prevent the monster from being summoned that turn, as far as we know! Banish Fusion from GY, add back Corobane. Lilybell attack directly, win, as Raccoon can only be used while a Salamangreat is battling. But let's imagine that... she doesn't. Corobane is in the deck, I'm gonna use it! Switch Lycoris to ATK and attack into Heatleo with her. Soulburner has no choice but to use Raccoon here as otherwise he won't have a Salamangreat to gain LP with and prevent Corobane from activating. Soulburner 500 -> 2100, Blue Girl takes an unimportant 700. Attack with Foxglove into Heatleo, fire Corobane, 2200 ATK -> 4400, 4400 - 2300 is exact lethal, 2100 -> 0. Even if she inexplicably doesn't use Corobane here, Blue Girl takes 100 more by crashing Foxglove, Foxglove triggers and specials a Link-2 or lower Trickstar from the Extra Deck, then burns for 200 for each card he controls. Summon Holly, deal 400. Holly then gains 400 ATK, goes up to 2400. 2400 into 2300, activate Corobane to go up to 4400, still win. Now that was a bit ridiculous, giving her a card she doesn't have proof of owning for whatever reason, despite having been out for months beforehand. Okay, fine. Activate skill, mill 3 (since a token is a Trickstar monster), add Lilybell anyway, Lilybell special summon. Instead, she attacks with Lycoris first. Soulburner is forced to Raccoon here, 900 -> 2500 LP, Lycoris dies. Divaridis attacks Heatleo, fire Corobane, 3600 > 2300 -> 1300 damage, Soulburner drops from 2500 to 1200. Lilybell attack directly, 800 damage. Now, Soulburner is at 400 LP and can't afford to Burning Draw! Lilybell effect, add back Corobane, Blue Girl passes. Soulburner gets his dead draw, he attacks Lilybell. 2300 > 800, Blue Girl takes 1500 damage and goes to 2500. Next turn, Blue Girl still has the Corobane in hand. Divaridis in, fire Corobane, win. Well, did you notice something? Blue Girl doesn't Normal Summon in this critical turn! Yet another route, and the most efficient one of all. She can just add and then Normal Lilybell, not using the effect. Fusion grab Corobane, battle. Lycoris attacks first, forced to Raccoon, Lycoris dies. Divaridis attacks, fire Corobane, you've seen this before. However, this time, Lilybell can add back Lycoris. Since Lycoris is in GY, there's an empty zone on her field. Lycoris target Lilybell, bounce back and special, Lilybell's effect to special summon activates, attack directly 1 more time for game. Surely there's other lines I'm missing, but the tldr is that there's multiple ways she could have won this duel that never involved Fusion Summoning, Trickstar isn't just a burn deck after all.

All female characters in Yugioh are done dirty. Remember 5D's? Remember how Aki wanted to become a riding duelist after experiencing it first hand with Yusei? He worked in multiple jobs, lived worse than he had to, he and yusei were working on the d-wheels (including izayoi's) and he was looking for sponsors. From a in-universe perspective he deserved it even more than jack to be a starter of team 5D's. It was his dream to enter the wrgp. Izayoi started with riding duels because she realized it's a more intimate way of dueling. The show also made a huge deal about how important experience is for a riding duel. Izayoi was still in her beginnings and barely defeated trudge. Crow meanwhile was a more experienced riding duelist who worked better with yusei and jack, given their past. I get that people feel like izayoi was neglected after the dark signers arc but the way things were written, I think it's only fair that crow got the starting spot over izayoi. I think people should rather blame how yugioh as a whole is written regarding character growth. Characters in yugioh come to themselves and grow through duels. Like in naruto. This writing style works well with characters who get many fights like Yusei, jack, naruto, sasuke, kakashi and more. But it's not the best choice if you have a big cast. People see izayoi, neji, rock lee and shino as wasted potential because they got neglected at some point after having multiple great fights/duels in the beginnings. The boruto anime showed that this style of writing can be avoided. In boruto the fights are not where characters come to themselves and grow, it's the natural outcome of the development that is already happening. The way characters interact each other, how they view themselves and how they perceive the world around themselves is so fundamentally different from naruto and yugioh. I think such a style would be interesting for a master duel series and make fans look beyond the "if female characters don't have many wins + a good win record = bad" view.

@mariowarion I think you completely miss the problem with Crow. The issues with him started in season one since his introduction. By that point, it felt like all the main players on the good side were introduced during the fortune cup. Rex Goodwin even took all of them to the temple and explained the history of the signers and dark signers, where it was foreshadowed that Leo/lua would be a signer with life stream dragon. Then crow shows up out of nowhere, a dark signer is made for him to fight and Akiza is just pushed to the side after her battle, replacing her in the final battle when he wasn’t even a signer. His awkward inclusion in the story is why people made the theory he was supposed to be a dark signer. The issues with the second season have to due with the trio of jack, crow and yusei being the sole focus, with yusei not losing a single match his whole run. This issue could easily have been circumvented if they just switched the order/team around so that yusei wasn’t always the last person. Realistically, yugioh should probably use a bit of both styles for it’s characters, with some development happening from watching other while some from actual dueling. But no matter which style the series uses, the show actually need to put some focus on the characters for it to work, which can happen if the cast stays small and each character gets at least a decent amount of screen time and doesn’t just focus on the main character(im looking at you gx)

Plus the characters use 60 card decks (they never confirm they use 40, though in speed duel the default is 20 so plays like this are more likely), but having done thousands of speed duels in Duel Links, getting a "lucky draw" is all about the deck building BEFORE the duel happens. 1 in those 1000 involved me pulling a stupidly lucky card at the right time to turn a duel around like this, and I can assure you it had NOTHING to do with using a life point gain stall card to buy myself another turn. Yusei vs Z-one from episodes 148-151, which'd be the first final boss duel you would cover. Nice analysis! For the mysterious cards in this duel, I have a few ideas. For Soulburner: One of Salamangreat Emerald Eagle OR Rise of the Salamangreat (he can't have both since having Heatleo on the field would mean he could use Rise's effect to Ritual Summon it, and if I'm understanding the card text right it would get around Birdhelm's effect since it doesn't target) and Cybersal Cyclone; Link Fire's Return is another possibility. Going off his line at the start of his final turn, this would assume he drew Rise/Emerald Eagle first and was banking on drawing the other one. For Blue Girl: Much less certain about hers since most of them would have some utility. Trickstar Treat is probably the safest bet since she had no traps in her hand during this duel.

Losing through plot is an understatement because I feel like Playmaker gets maybe an over abundance of duels for a series where every characters on screen duels including Brave Max's dumb ass. I feel like allowing Aoi to be apart of the core would have been great. They waited too late while giving Aoi a THIRD persona on top of it. Its like they sacked Haru so they could advertize Marincess and they immediately threw her at the end game boss of the arc who HAD to win because he wasn't allowed to lose to anyone other than Playmaker and maiden had the Water Ignis. The writers loved Soulburner so much he was allowed to beat the MC's rival in probably one of the best duels in the entire YGO series. They couldn't have Aoi's new persona at the beginning of S2 get the Water Ignis then and win at least 2 more duels on screen including one with Windy and/or Lightning where she wins. And then her and Soulburner could have lost to a fully evolved Bohman. That would have went a long way to them not totally throwing this character in the trash
@ivanbluecoolКүн бұрын
Blue girl angel etc should have been destorying everyone in the anime with her burn deck which just wins going first and can probably lock turn three Just make it so she doesn't fight the main villain and give her a streak of using her deck correctly.
@defectivesickle5643Күн бұрын
I think the VRAINS duel writer touted difficulty writing Soulburner because "he was too hard to have lose" Same could go for Blue Angel. I'm down to have characters lose but not this much in these ways
@ivanbluecoolКүн бұрын
@defectivesickle5643 problem with them is how the plot makes them lose. 5ds for example we see yusei go through different stragety in his head before the move is made showing he has plays and counter plays ready So when he wins we already got the set up for the turn. Here they just lose because plot needs it to happen for yusaku. If the opponent had a heal burn damage card and blue angel set her stragety up it would be a great twist and still give her kudos for having a 4k burn on turn one.
@soukenmarufwt5224Күн бұрын
@@ivanbluecool Yusei duels are the definition of ass pulls and only so Yusei can win and his opponents play extremely poorly so he can never lose. Not to mention Yusei is the poster child of extremely circumstantial cards (usually traps) ever played for a hyper specific situation. Lots of duel either Yusei should have lost or if his opponents didn't play so badly.
@ivanbluecoolКүн бұрын
@soukenmarufwt5224 no they aren't and again soul burner and blue angel are basically that winning and losing making them worse as a result. Again read what I just said and take note even Yugo did it in arc v since thinking ahead and planning for a counter while you do a stragety isn't a pull it's literally using your brain and getting results
@drakeredgrave6747Күн бұрын
@@ivanbluecooljust because they show him planning the cards yusei gets a pass? All the writting decisions in V-rains make total sense when you consider that even one of the lead writers for the Yugioh anime since GX stated that Yusaku was easily the hardest protagonist to write for , because his deck was actually OP at the time; making it difficult to give him organic feeling losses or stressful situation in Duels, while also making said Duel interesting. I have no trouble believing this issue bled to other characters as well with Skye/Blue Girl suffering the most because, realistically, her deck should have easily won her 80% of her Duels
@dragonmaster3182Күн бұрын
I constantly hear people say that gate of fire is just a plot convenient card that was only because the writers wanted blue girl to lose. I just can’t understand this statement, this card is the perfect counter to blue girl’s strategy. Do you really think that Soulburner, someone who is a huge fan of blue girl, who studied her deck and strategy because he thought she was cool, who correctly pointed out a flaw in her deck earlier in the same duel wouldn’t have a counter to her deck! He found the card gate of fire, knew it was a good counter to her deck and specifically added into his deck knowing that he was going to go to link VRAINS and potentially run into or duel her. From what we know about Soulburner even up until now I would have been much more surprised if he wasn’t prepared for her strategies.

I really don't know why, but there are some characters in Yu-Gi-Oh that have huge potential, but the show creators decide to just screw them over time and time again. Blue Angel is such a character. Hey TGS, I know a lot of people, including myself, have been asking you to do a duel analysis for the duel between Don Thousand vs Nasch and Yuma, and later Kite, but we're asking because of how well you've done previous duel analysis'. If Blue Girl didn't activated Corobane she would have another turn an possibly win because she still has her field spell (and assuming that Corobane can special summon herself like in the tcg). On her turn: Summon Corobane-> because Soulburner has a card in the S/T, field summon a token->token+Corobane into any link2 (because I doubt she has a second Divaridis)->Field again to summon a token to a zone a link point to->Link2+token into Foxglove->Foxglove deals 200 for every card Soulburner controls, which is 2 (Violet Chimera and Gate of fire) so that's 400, over the limit of the trap and Soulburner has 100 lp, so Blue Girl wins. If Corobane doesn't summon herself, all she needs is to have another Trickstar in hand or Laurel. If she doesn't have Foxglove in her extra... well, it would depend on her hand, if she had a useless Trickstar card in hand, she can make crimson heart (with Coro and the toekn) to draw a card and hope to get an extender to make Bella Madonna and win that way.

Soulburner randomly having the one card to counter Trickstars despite having exactly zero idea he was going to be facing them, whilst also never having been shown editing his deck after realising he was going to duel Blue Girl is the biggest 'we want this character to win just cause' shenanigan pulled by the writers in the history of Yugioh, and that includes out of duel moments or powers like the Puzzle or Shining Draw. He has NO reason to run that card. Blue Girl or even Blue Angel was not a known player in the Ignis hunt until literally the second they met before this duel. A cheap plot device used because the second Soulburner was written into the series they decided to fuck over Aoi and Onizuka just to push him despite him being far less interesting than the pair of them. He's literally just a more cheerful Playmaker, they even wrote characters describing him as such in the show! Overpushing Soulburner over Aoi and Onizuka was the first major mistake Vrains made and it causes a ripple effect throughout the rest of the series.

Playmaker vs Revolver rounds 1 and 2 might be an interesting analysis. I’m pretty sure it’s one of few duels where a misplay during the first duel was what caused a loss in the second During the final turn of the first duel, playmaker immediately goes to activate his skill Storm Access. After activating it, he obtains Firewall Dragon. Playmaker attempts to summon Firewall, but Revolver activates Remote Rebirth, which thanks to a card in playmaker’s GY, causes the duel to end in a draw However, if Revolver was able to use Remote Rebirth at any point before Playmaker used his skill, Playmaker never obtains Firewall, and is never able to break Revolver’s Fire Prison in the second duel and, as a result, goes on to lose the duel

Yugioh Everything listed this as his number 1 duel which he would like to change the outcome most in a list of duels that "would not change the story if they ended differently". While I disagree with some entries on his list, like Jounouchi vs Zigfried, I agree with this one. Multiple decisions in this made me really dislike it. The anti-Trickstar-card and the fact that Blue Girl used that battle effect in order to take less damage. A way better use of that would have been her surviving that turn and trying to use Corobane as a counterattack next turn to die to Chimeras effect there. Also, there is this trend that Zexal has some similarities to DM, Arc V has them to GX, and Vrains to 5ds; Soul Burner has a bunch of things in common with Crow; some people say Crow is very bland, kinda only having his "be there for the kids"-going on; Soul Burner does not even have that. I rooted for him to lose every single duel from this point onward. And his last two wins against Roboppi and Revolver were similarly clearly stupid like this one, as in you don't even have to look into the duels in-dept to know that he should have lost.

I don't want to rag to much on the duel writing... because there was only 1 person doing it and he didn't have the full say on what goes on in said duel (like who wins or loses).... but BOY does it feel like Soulburner had a ton of Plot Armor for this one. Even ignoring the misplay(s) Aoi made, the fact that Soulburner had a "never before seen, never seen again" card who's ONLY effect was to stop precisely the Trickster's main strategy, but still does nothing to even a Hinotama... AND that he got a "never before seen, Almost never seen again" Fusion spell that lets him mimic the main trick of SUPER POLYMERIZATION (without any attention called to that fact despite the former card's importance and significance in past series), definitely makes it seem like the only real reason Aoi lost was because said duel writer was told "Make Soulburner win. We haven't smashed the 'he's-comparable-to-Playmaker' button hard enough".

In his mind that kind of deck is something you give to the villains or the secondary characters to put the protagonists in a pickle, if the final blow isn't dealt by a beefy boss monster the duel isn't ''exciting''! My friend got me back into Duel Links during it's Anniversary, and the Anniversary packs gave me a lot of Trickstars, so that's still my main deck... used properly she shoulda been able to beat Soulburner, but anime has to anime. I at least like that they showcased some of their abilities pretty well... Strange though in Duel Links Corobane's effect isn't that it doubles attack of the other Trickstar, it adds it's original attack (2000) to the Trickstar's attack, even though the card reads like it would double attack O_o Otherwise had Blue Girl picked Lilybell, she would've been able to attack Soulburner's lifepoints directly on her next turn...

The biggest issue, is having all that technology and still not being able to look up card effects of your opponent.

I find funny on how Soulburner have a strong deck, but still feel one of the character with most plot armor aka random card that fits perfectly the situation but is useless mostly of the time (aka the gate of fire that is only useful against Trickstar)

He's a popular character but I've honestly never liked him. He shows up out of no where and he becomes the immediate #2. He doesn't offer anything to the plot and out side of his name his design is really ugly. It also doesn't help that Salamangreat is pushed to be the most powerful deck out of the VRAINS era especially once all of Zeroboros non-sense is put to bed

He used up so much plot karma that eventually the plot just went "Nope! You're losing against dice rolls now!"

My guess for the mysterious cards: Soulburner: Salamangreat Emerald Eagle, Salamangreat and Gift of the Salamangreat Blue Girl: Trickstar Light Arena? Probably the only brick she could have.
