When I was in Junior High School (grades 7 through 9; 1955-1957) Robert Frost came to our school on two different occasions to recite his poems to an all-school assembly. It was impressed on us by the teachers how this was a very special and rare privilege. I’m not sure we really understood its significance. But I do remember him sitting alone on a chair in the middle of the darkened stage, his white hair and craggy face catching the light, as he read many of his poems, including this one. Sweet memories and a bittersweet poem.

You are exquisitely fortunate to have experienced this kind of rare occasion. A Nobel Prize winner, an outrageously gifted poet steal time away from his hectic schedule only to share a moment with his gifts in tow with you and your peers. Like yourself, I have savoured, pondered, and appreciated (repeatedly reflected) over every word, every thematic symbolism because I identify with the omniscient narrative voice in the poem and I too, took the road less travelled. The least popular road and for myself, it has made all the difference. I wouldn't change a thing in retrospect.

You are so fortunate to have heard the man himself. How good that you recognize your privilege. I do not think of this poem as bittersweet, but as rather upbeat. I have it memorized and when I reach "I doubted if I should ever come back" I slow my voice and emphasize it, because it's true: we cannot go back...ellie

You've taken the exact wrong meaning from the poem, he spends the start of the poem explaining that he cant really see a difference in the paths and understands that he never will and this fills him with regret but he picks a path, then later as the old man he's telling himself that he took the road less travelled is a lie to try to rationalise and romanticise away the regret he feels for having had to make an arbitrary but life changing decision. "I took the path less travelled" is a self aggrandizing lie.

@stevenryder7285
@stevenryder7285 4 ай бұрын
@jamesshielssoberlife.3701 to reassure himself and stav3 away the regret he feels at having to choose a path knowing that he'll not come back to see the other. He sits and says he can't tell the difference between the paths, then talks about how he understands how he can't take both paths, so can't know what was on the other path to know, so can't know he took the less travelled path. "And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back." Is the most relevant stanza, he's saying that as he sees it as it happens both roads are unwalked and hell never walk both, but looking back on it as an old man he tells himself he took the right path.

I’m here at the 2 paths right now. One path looks fairly certain…the outcome is mostly determined, there will no doubt be other branches to that path I could take later… It would lead to a good life. Not glamorous, but definitely the safe option. The other path… I only know how to walk the first few steps of it… I don’t know if it’s a dead end… I don’t know if it will lead to a waterfall… I don’t know if it will lead off a cliff… It’s uncertain… Yet, it beckons with adventure… I’ll be living by my masculine wits and God’s divine leadership if I choose that path. And that frightens me, deeply.

One wouldn't think the poet's voice, with such limited dynamics and pitch range, could be so moving. But it is. For one, he lets his words speak for themselves. And his timing is perfect. The voice of a person who didnt take the well-worn roads...

Learnt this during high school. I was really fascinated with the poem at the time. It motivated me to choose what I want to do after school. Although my life hasn't turned out to be as what I wanted and I have too many regrets, just have to live with it. But this poem is really nostalgic, made me remember I was once young and carefree.

Robert Frost was a brave man who was incredibly logical, intense, driven and motivated. Being a person of conscience as well, he was able to express his ideas in such a way as to prick the conscience of others. Even those who had buried their own, his words did reach them.

The Road Not Taken BY ROBERT FROST Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

How insightful, meaningful, and beautiful Frost's words are. This reading of his poem is haunting in all the best ways. I first read this poem in high school and it had very little meaning to me. What's so beautiful about poetry is that the words evolve and change in meaning, as we do ourselves.

To bear the relentles hailstones and deep frost of attitude, Only to reach your goal and have it held against your head as a gun so that you express never more.
