The road to nowhere was originally for access to sand/gravel.. also I think only those older model Boeing 737s were compatible with gravel kits.

Very cool! I think you're right, thank you for the insight :D

This is correct. The earlier models had the narrow opening engine with gravel kits the blow downward and sit higher above the ground making them more versatile for northern runways.

@@nomadic.thoughts This is not correct. It was a path/trail/area where people 4 wheeled for many years, then it was "paved" for Queen Elizabeth's visit in the 90s. Once you turn off the main road, you go left up the now concrete road for just under 1km, then the road is gravel. New subdivisions have been build on the paved side about .8km from the main road on the Road to Nowhere. That is where I live, and they were built in 2015. I currently live bout 60 meters from where the road to nowhere turns from pavement to gravel. The queen was able to come out as far as here to see the Tundra (which is visible from my living room). Also.... the 737s only go to places here in Nunavut, that have paved runways.

It would be possible to drive there in winter with off road vehicles.

No I live on this road! You are wrong! It's an access road that goes to the lake Geraldine where our drinking water comes from. Driving the road takes you along a river beach with stunning views into green valleys in the summer.
