There is a great theory that Sean Connery's character in this movie is actually an older James Bond (Connery's timeline) and it fits so well that I think the movie gets even better if you see it that way. It's totally unofficial of course and Bruckheimer himself dismissed the idea, but still... :D

I wonder if he was offered the role of a Baddie would he have taken it. His screen magnetism would have be great for Saruman as in the books he was a charmer. Nicolas Cage has his own style-for better or worse he feels very singular and genuine in how he performs. Always gives 110% with each role. I definitely love him when he’s more serious like Leaving Las Vegas (he won his Oscar in that) or Adaptation but he’s so entertaining in things like Con Air, Face/Off, or Matchstick Men.

When Connery found out Disney was upset with Michael Bay for shooting over schedule, he took matters into his own hands. Sean asks him, ‘You want me to help?’ Cut to: Having lunch with the Disney execs, Bay announces that Mr. Connery would like to visit and say hi. Sean comes in, sits down across from the open-mouthed executives.” Bay continues, “In classic Sean Connery style, he belts out in his Scottish brogue: ‘This boy is doing a good job, and you’re living in your Disney F*cking Ivory Tower and we need more f*cking money!!’ Without missing a beat, they responded. ‘Ok. How much?'”

@Fredrick Frederickson The Mobster in question was Johnny Stompanato, who was dating Lana Turner at the time. Stompanato jealous of Turner being over in England out of his sight. FYI, Sean Connery's initial conversation with Nic Cage's character, where a nervous Nic says "I'm Stanley, Stanley Goodspeed" is a throwback to Sean's 1971 movie "Diamonds are Forever" where James Bond is introduced to the character Plenty O'Toole: Plenty O'Toole : Hi, I'm Plenty. James Bond : But of course you are. Plenty O'Toole : Plenty O'Toole. James Bond : Named after your father perhaps?

Personally i think this has 1 of the best soundtracks, at the beginning when he says " they're not coming for us are they sir " you really felt that. Also General Hummel maybe the villain but you really see he isn't he just really cares about his fellow soldiers and feels like this was his last choice, he didn't want anyone to die especially any other soldiers and he had no intention of firing those rockets at civilians, he was a hero and in my opinion never lost that title. This film portrayed our SAS as best of the best unlike other American films which always seem to portray them as either useless or average because they want the American soldiers to look better which always annoyed me but wasn't surprising.

Per IMDB, The guy whose range rover (British equivalent of the humvee) is commandeered by Ed Harris in National Treasure 2 (2007) is the same man whose humvee is commandeered by Sean Connery in The Rock's (1996) San Francisco chase scene (the man is Hans Georg Struhar, and these are his ONLY two acting roles; normally he appears to be a wardrobe guy). The recipe for Michael Bay making a great movie : - limit his budget so the film actually runs an appropriate length - bring in British writers to polish the script and offset his jingoism - allow the sheer authority of Ed Harris to elevate all of the serious content. This remains Bay's best film and sadly he'll never be reigned in like this again.

Great choice. I just rewatched this for I don't know how many times. It's easily one of the better action films of the 90's and probably the best Michael Bay has ever done since it was made early before "Bayhem" became a verb. Nice hammy performances, a solid turn from Ed Harris who has a legit and sympathetic reason for doing what he does. Unfortunately he hires some stone cold lunatics who probably should've been bounced from the marines long ago due to their hard on for murdering the people they're supposed to be fighting for. It gets a little much near the end but overall a very solid flick. Just don't think too hard about it or it falls apart real quick.

Sean Connery is such a great actor and character. By the way, James Bond, played by Sean Connery, escaped Alcatraz. "The Man Who Would Be King" and "The Name of the Rose" are fantastic films, already commented here. He also co-starred in Hitchcock's movie "Marnie" with Tippi Hedren ("The Birds"); and in the sci-fi film "Outland" as well, worth watching; or "Rising Sun", with Wesley Snipes. Denzel's "Man on Fire" is a must see. And with respect to Nicolas Cage, I would strongly recommend "8mm", with Joaquin Phoenix, and "Snake Eyes".

All great films! I deliberately recommend them to see him in _Woman of Straw_ with Gina Lollobrigida. Very atypical role by Connery.

The scene where John Mason beats a man to death using just one thumb is the best thing in this film (especially how it's a pay off for an earlier set up).

Really cool theory out there is that Sean Connery’s character is ACTUALLY James Bond. And the preponderance of evidence supports that.

If you ever played COD Modern Warfare 2 back in 09, you'll remember that the shower ambush and the flare scene were directly taken from this film. Great to see this movie still holds up as objectively the only "great" Michael Bay movie (Transformers 1 was fun).

Connery started his career as a body builder, and competed in the Mr. Universe competition in the 1950's. Schwarzenegger would follow a similar career path in the 70's

The Rock is one of my favorite 90s action films and one that epitomizes high-concept 90's action. A crazy scenario, a small number of people against immense odds, and a bunch of gunfights and explosions. It's also probably Michael Bay's best film and the one with the most character depth. Glad you two enjoyed it! As others and you have mentioned, Con Air and Face/Off are good and silly Nic Cage films. For Connery, you can't go wrong with the early James Bond films.

Nick Cage? Start from his comedies with "Raising Arizona". A comedy you never knew you had to watch! Cage's first movies were comedies like "Valley Girl", and "Honeymoon In Vegas". He was also one of the surfers in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". Yes he is related to Francis Ford Coppola.

Other films with Nicolas Cage you might find entertaining are "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (2010), "Snake Eyes" (1998), "Gone in 60 seconds" (2000), "Con Air" (1997), and "Amos and Andrew" (1993). Quick anecdote, I think Cage was at some point in the 90's considered to play Superman O.O Among Sean Connery's films, these come to mind in case you want to check them out: He played the bad guy in "The Avengers" (1998, not Marvel, rather it's the modern film version of the old '60s tv series with Patrick Macnee), there's also a weird futuristic story in the classic "Zardoz" (1974), he plays Allan Quatermain in "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (2003), he also acted in Hitchcock's "Marnie" (1964), and the youngest I've ever seen him is in Walt Disney's "Darby O'Gill and the little people" (1959). :D

This is a great movie and, arguably, Michael Bay's only great film. The film benefited from a long pre-production period which allowed for extensive rewrites of the script, polishing of the dialog and rehearsal time. This is one of those rare films that lives up to it's awesome trailer which screams, "This movie is going to kick ass!" FYI: Mason was hitting every with the hmvv on purpose. He was trying to leave as much destruction and mayhem in his wake to create obstacles and make it easier to him to elude his pursuers.

It’s a great action movie. That being said, I always love pointing out that the boiler room sequence makes no sense at all. If Mason was capable of opening the door from the outside, then why did he bother memorizing the sequence and nearly being incinerated when he was breaking out of the prison?
