How Hackenschmidt and his fellow men has influenced Estonians in a way - is if you look at Estonian olympic achievements in general (both independent and as being part of Russia/Soviets). No other country has so high and severe achievements compared to it's population and size. Hackenschmidt's ideas are kind of a basis of most of estonians.

I heard from old-timers that after-war generation was mostly Eastern segment. About 100 000 was killed in the war or did not return from Siberia. Another part, 100 000 went to the west as refugees. Estonian education was crippled because all the high society and people with university education left Estonia before the Soviet occupation. That modern Estonians are either semi-Bolsheviks or the quarter-Russians.

@@AlCarou It's actually quite segregated, Estonians and Russians in Estonia live in two different worlds. Most young Estonians can't even speak Russian, even though it's often taught as a third language (English being the second language). Most Estonians strongly dislike bolshevism and Russification. Estonians in Estonia go to Estonian speaking schools and most of the Russians in Estonia go to schools where most subjects are taught in Russian. Many Russians in Estonia only watch Russian media and communicate with people who can speak Russian.

It should be noted, however, that Gotch used foul tactics to defeat Hackenschmidt during their first match. For their second match, Hackenschmidt came to the ring with an injured knee that he suffered while training with Roller but, not wishing to disappoint the audience, he wrestled Gotch anyway and allowed him to have his 2 falls in just 27 minutes. Hackenschmidt would go on living for another 56 years, writing several books and teaching physical education to members of the House of Lords. "The Cheater", on the other hand, would die in 6 years following a year of health problems.

The bad-jacketing of Gotch in this documentary is nonsense I respect Hackenschmidt for his hard work and his accomplishments but his initial recounting of the bout with Gotch did not include these remarks about fouls and oil on the body, that came out after he went back to Europe he did an about face to salve his reputation, in fact initially he said he had no desire to wrestle Gotch again because it would not restore his title, meaning he didn't believe he would win a rematch. The knee injury in the second bout wasn't a major injury if we go by what Hackenschmidt himself said he said that he was fit to wrestle for his life, I'm certain that Gotch himself would admit that Hackenschmidt was a great wrestler and an all around gentleman if we could ask him today. Again I don't want this to come off as Nationalistic, they were both great men of their time period who had far more in common than what they had in differences.

Yes, He spoke Estonian, He was there at the side of Amsterdam marathon race introducing Himself, when an Esthonian Lossmann almost did win the contest in 1920. His father was a German and mother an Estonian Swede. His mother had Estonian blood, thats true, but He was also a Saxon!
