I played a lot as a kid and a teenager, and then lost interest for years but have been really getting back into rugby this last year or so, doing lots of catching up pre RWC so that I wasn't clueless about teams and players for the tournament. One of the big changes since I started catching up is the blitz defense and how important it has become for so many teams, with their crazy line speed (and so often offside at the ruck seeming to go unchallenged)! And it's surprising to me that the humble grubber isn't used more often to beat it. I love grubbers haha, feels so good to put one through and someone who's good at it can be such a threat, especially against the rush defense as you said. Would like to see a return of more grubbers. If you fancied doing a kicking part 2 vid, I think you could talk about WHEN to utilize certain kicks (like when the full-back is out of position), when NOT to use certain kicks (like how just kicking to Bauden Barrett when it's not contestable will just loose you games), and how important the different kinds of spin can be (seems to be a modern increase in skill in that area, spinning it in to the field away from touch, or out of the field towards touch, or the end over end grubber vs the sideways rolly-polly grubber, top spin to keep it rolling or back spin to make it sit up etc.) Thanks for another interesting and entertaining vid!!

I started watching Rugby a few years ago, love it. Growing up in the US, exposure was minimum. I have enjoyed your videos and I now have a little better understanding of the different positions. Thanks.

Also I would say cross kicks, to me are different from chips, with the idea being similar but the actual kick usually being alot flatter and faster than a chip

Completely agree. Your really have to transfer your weight in a more horizontal way and do not have to raise your leg too high. Being straight is very important to. The goal is to quickly reach your destination in a predictable way for your teammates (wingers usually).

Love this video. Probably because I'm a back. No downvotes yet - must mean no forwards have viewed it yet.

Great video as always mate! Some things: 1) You forgot to mention the hipster kicking tee (and Neil Jenkins' choice) - SAND! 2) Bald French guy - Lionel Beauxis (such an elegant kicking technique btw) 3) IMO the bomb/up-and-under kick should always be called a 'garryowen'. It's a bit of living rugby history and I don't want it to fade away! 4) Who are the players that could execute both accurate and long range penalty kicks to a test-level standard? Dan Carter? Leigh Halfpenny? Morne Steyn? Diego Dominguez?

Excellent video once more! As a kicker myself, I felt when you said that mastering drop goal is super hard. I also feel pretty confident when I am kicking at the post but I cannot be consistent with my drop goals, I just cannot control everything... Same with the tees. I lately changed my kicking tee for a higher version but I lost accuracy (not much but still). Yes, I can boot from 55 meters now but I struggle to be as accurate closer to the posts. I was wondering if you think it is a good idea to use 2 different tees: one for long distances and one for shorter ones. I know it is often not advice but I would like to know your thoughts on that. Well done again for this great vid! Cheers!

Great video dude. I’m a relative newbie to the game. I’ve been following for 4 years in the USA. These videos are lovely. I’m always yearning for the mechanics of the game. Thoughts on 55-22?

Love the video, informative, humerous as ever. On another note; I know you've gotta eat but that frequency of ads was very off-putting broke up the smooth flow what are well made vids. Just my thoughts and others may disagree. #longlivethecone

A good example of good box kicking in this rwc would be that midget Will Genia. As much as i hate Australia I cant help but just be amazed at how good he is at exploiting spaces behind the opposition line. He did it against Fiji and then was at it again last night against Wales ( a game that they lost yeepee!)

I’m sorry, but watching preparation for a penalty kick is the 2nd most boring activity in a rugby match. (Repetitive scrummaging being 1st). What capitalises on this is the results of illegal scrummaging is the award of a penalty. Doh! Of course scrummaging is limited within so many necessary restrictions that penalties are awarded. And so it degenerates into an event of ever decreasing circles. Do you think that the law makers of rugby Union could think about the beauty of the ball handling game and develop a new ruling instead of just continually slowing the game down. None of us want to watch a league match instead, there are enough of those already. Could we just please try to think outside of the box? Quick tap penalties, possibly?
