"Gimme Shelter" exemplified the turmoil and the end of a decade. The 60's. The Vietnam war. Assassination's, Civil Unrest...and the 70's were waiting....Martin Scorsese uses this song in 3 of his movies, Goodfellas, The Departed and Casino. Such an iconic tune! That's Merry Clayton adding her amazing vocals.🎸🔥🌟

Merry Clayton is great. Mick Jagger did the song with U2 at the R&R Hall of Fame (I believe) and Fergie did a great job singing Merry's part. The Edge was also great on the guitar.

That's Merry Clayton on female vocals..They called her up in the middle of the night. She didn't know the Rolling Stones, and wasn't going to go, at first. They sent a car around for her. She was 8 months pregnant, and curlers in her hair..They didn't know what they were getting with her..She thought, I'm going to blow them out of their seats..She did...Sadly, because of giving it her all, she went home that night and lost the baby...Amazing vocals!

@mikefetterman67823 жыл бұрын
Mick Jagger was actually an accomplished Harp, or blues harmonica player. War children were the kids born of the WWII, his whole generation. They were juxtapositioning the irony of the world not learning it's lesson from their childhood to their early adulthood. And how war and destruction seems a never ending human cycle.

They are THE ROLLING STONES not “Rolling Stone”. You used the name-logo from the magazine...they are not one and the same and do not have anything to do with each other. You should change it
@joonzville3 жыл бұрын
Small pedantic point. Rolling Stone *has* had The Rolling Stones on their cover (or at least different members of the band, mostly Jagger). So they *did* have "[something] to do with each other". Sorry, couldn’t resist. ;-9 Your larger point is correct, they have the wrong image.
@matthewdrake43853 жыл бұрын
The stones have a deep catalog going back almost 60 years. If this is your first stones reaction, great choice. The song pretty much sums up the end of the 60s. Back then, Vietnam was going on,you had riots, protests and many things like that going on. Thru the 60s and 70s, Stones could do no wrong musically. They were kind of hit and miss in the 80s and 90s. Sympathy for the devil, Dead flowers, beast of burden, satisfaction, you can't always get what you want, just barely scratching the surface of their greatness.

It feels weird to hear adults say things like I have never heard of the Beatles/Stones or Floyd. I am getting used to it and do understand that this generation has its own music which is very different to mine. Times have moved on. It is not so bad when it is a child but it still feels weird when adults know nothing of these guys. There were so huge for so long and there are still so many people of my generation and the one before that, who still think of them as gods. So when someone doesn’t know about them it is like falling into an alternative dimension.
@gushers75382 жыл бұрын
This song is about the My Lai Massacre known as the Mass murder, it happens on March 16, 1968, in the Vietnam War, at least 347 and 504 were killed by the U.S army soldiers. A lot of women were raped and murder and their bodies were mutilated, as were children as young as 12 years old. Only 20 soldiers were charged, but only Lieutenant William Calley Jr., a platoon leader in C Company was convicted and found guilty of murdering 22 villagers. he was originally given a life sentence, but served three-and-a-half years under house arrest after President Richard Nixon commuted his sentence.

At 4:57-58 right after Merry Clayton's voice cracks, if you listen closely you can hear one of the crew yell, "Woooo!" in the background. Mick Jagger said the band was recording this in the middle of the night, and they decided they needed a female backing vocalist. So they called Merry right away and woke her up. She came over to the studio with curlers in her hair and made the recording in only one or two takes.
