Arguably The Rolling Stones’ best song. Amazing guitar layering that they’re known for.. But it’s Merry Clayton’s outstanding backing/duet vocals that make this song IMO. The Stones’ producer called a pregnant, sleeping Merry Clayton in the middle of night to come lay down vocals; she arrived with curlers in her hair and nailed those crazy lyrics in 2 takes🔥 Sadly her attempt at launching a successful solo career never manifested. But her powerhouse vocal on this track will forever stand the test of time. 👏🏼

I read in a Stones' bio about how Stones' guitarist Keith Richards came to write this. In 1968, lead singer of Stones, Mick Jagger, was filming a movie called "Performance" and the script called for Mick to do a sex scene with actress Anita Pallenberg. The director wanted a realistic sex scene so had Jagger and Pallenberg do it for real in front of the cameras. Well, Pallenberg was Keith Richards' girlfriend at the time, and he was there in studio watching this scene go down. So, after awhile he couldn't take it any more, you know, watching his girl shag his good friend. He stormed out and went and sat in his car in the car park. He wrote this song in the car then and there as it started to rain. He was obviously in a dark place.......

@LeGrandSarrazin3 жыл бұрын
From what I remember of the story, it goes that when they hired the Hell’s Angels for the concert, they had mistaken the criminal biker gang for the casual British motorcycle club, also called Hell’s Angels. While they thought they were just gettin a couple tough guys for show, they ended up getting a band of felons. They seemingly had no idea who it was they had hired and it was an unmitigated disaster. Although it was an honest mistake they were associated together for some time and had the positive and negative effect of making them seem darker and more dangerous than they were trying to be. Which made the parents more afraid of, and the kids fall even more in love with, them. Wild times, indeed!

Excellent representation of the sheer political turmoil going on at the time

Mick, when asked about this song, replied that it was a "very rough, very violent era." Kennedy had been killed earlier in the decade, there were lots of demonstrations going on and at Kent state some protesting students were killed by the National Guard. Fifty thousand (!) American soldiers' lives were lost in that war. People were angry.

Love the Stones! Agree with all recommendations, especially Sympathy for the Devil & Paint it Black! Great reaction as always!😉

Don't let figuring out the lyrics, get in the way of enjoying the song. We all figure stuff like that out a couple listens in, but we don't have an audience. Banger of a song.

Ok to not comment on a song. For or against is your prerogative, ok to let it stand on its own and reserve your comment.

Symparhy for the Devil is one of their seminal tunes... great lyrics and a pulsing track... you'll enjoy it🙂

I feel he is saying "children" meaning us.. the youngsters he was talking to at the time.. it was what.. 1969 or 1970 when that song came out.. times were different.. instead of "dudes" it was "cats"...man, that cat was really tripping hard.. I don't think he meant literal children. What is so bad-ass about this song is the lady who sang her ass off.. 9 months pregnant in the middle of the night. I saw an interview with her where she said... "I'm fixing to blow the roof off of this place".. and she did just that. Remarkable!!!

This song isn’t a metaphor. It’s about something horrible that happened in history. To the children in Vietnam during the war. A VERY dark and disturbing song.

The ‘rock and roll circus’ live versions of Sympathy for The Devil and You Can’t Always Get What You Want (from 1968) are insane - in every sense of the word - and you never forget them once you’ve seen them! Amazing!
