Gimme Shelter's instrumental twin guitar break is one of the greatest in rock 'n' roll history. Complimented by Keith Richards monstrous, burn your house down rhythm guitar slashes, Mick Taylor enters serious neo-psychedelic blues - third eye, mercurial - guitar territory and proves he was one of the greatest most inspired guitar players of the 60's/70's. For five short years the Stones, with Taylor proved that they truly were the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world. Remember them this way.

I think Mick Taylor's is the best but in 1995 Ronnie Wood did a pretty good job and Lisa Fischer blew it out of the Universe, but still Mick Taylor was the Sh*t there is no question about it....

In that 1st version, Mick Taylor plays a scintillating, angry solo from start to finish, still blows me away!

When I first heard this version it was off the bootleg which the stones bought the rights too ironically. Mick Taylor absolutely rips the solo. It has every trick in a lead guitar players dreams. I think it comes down to the stones love/hate with Philly. They were constantly being pelted with change and bottles. Jagger addressed it a couple times. Quote we want your money but not coins in our face lol

I was at this concert in Phila back in '72. I can't believe how tight a band they were then. I don't think they ever topped that tour. Taylor is superb on this version. Wish they had him play it on their 50th anniversary shows.

I was there too, and I agree, they were incredibly tight that night... Saw them in 81 and thought they were horrible... Said I'd never go see them again and haven't... They were so much better with Mick Taylor.....
@NJcruiser
@NJcruiser 4 жыл бұрын
@@Thegoodwizard When I saw them again in '75 I just felt that something was off or missing. Looking back and listening to these youtube excerpts of the concerts I think it was losing Taylor that made a big difference to their sound at least in concert. He gave them both muscle and drive and yet had incredible feeling for softer sounds with his guitar playing. Your experience in '81 seems to have mirrored mine from '75.

I have spent many years with my headphones trying to decide which live version of Shelter is the best. This has long been one of my favorites along with Brussels, London, Ft Worth. I am really no closer than when I’d begun. They were all glorious! This is not only my favorite Stones song but imho possibly the GOAT of rock songs. No doubt at that time, 1969-1974 the Stones really were the greatest in the world. A big part of that was Taylor’s gifts. Truly a top three guitarist in rock history. He’s never fully gotten his due as far as I am concerned.

Taylor here has a sustained drive, incrementing his solo to perfection, with a quite astounding lift toward the end... this cannot be learned, it is deeply felt. Just emoting guitar playing, where virtuosity it at the service of the song. This is the difference between Taylor and most other guitar players... emotion comes first.

A big thank you to KZbin that allows us to see/hear these old classics. Every time I think I've heard the best Mick Taylor guitar work, I land on something like this version. He just burns through this - which is exactly what rock is supposed to do. Can't find a Stones song close to this intensity after he left. Pity.

@carl77724 @Steve Bell. I agree with you both. Taylor was absolutely MOLTEN! All of the Stones were at the top of their game but Taylor was on another planet. His solos on so many of these shows were otherworldly and added depth and dimension to an already great band. Especially ‘72-73 tours, so many incredible live shows available today thank God.

there are a few, miss you live 1978 texas posted by motorcycle and rock n roll, comes close and the Japanese kanji version of Amsterdam 1995 with Lisa Fischer, but not like these, close with Ronnie Wood but not Mick Taylor, so that is that judge for yourself, I do like Mick's guitar playing on Miss You in 1978 and the comments are funny, ronnie has a moment in 1995 Amsterdam, but it seems cut short ?? also Charlie gets some long over due fan credit in Amsterdam RIP amigo

This first version, which I refer to as the "thank you Philly" version, is my favorite version of Gimme Shelter. No one mentions this, but the "other" Mick, the one who sings, is also at his best on this version. Also, among the uploads of the "thank you Philly" performance that I have heard, this upload has the cleanest sound quality.

Greatest band of all time, and this was their absolute peak, with Mick Taylor at his very best and before Keith brought Ronnie along and took them back to more of a rock and roll band. This was as glamorous as they got, they got the mix between Rock, Rock and Roll and Glam right in the years of 72' and 73' in my NOT so humble opinion.

i was three when this happened but, i am a huge fan of Mick Taylor bootlegs with the Stones... what was it like to watch them in the Mick Taylor era? did anyone realize how great he was or was everyone caught up in the other Mick, and Keith, and the music. it just amazes me that he didn't become totally worshiped by the millions of Stones fans, or maybe he did, or maybe it was just the people who loved the music even more than the showcase...

Mick Taylor................this first Philadelphia version of Gimme Shelter is the greatest live version ever. The unbelievable guitar work of Mick Taylor and the tightness of the band make for a moment of sheer perfection. IMO the top five Rock and Roll songs of all time {in whatever order..........for various reasons} are: The End {Doors} Stairway to Heaven {Zeppelin} Gimme Shelter {Stones} A Day in the Life {Beatles} and I'll have to think about the fifth one.

The best part of the whole thing, better even than Taylor's solo {in the first version..........the first version is the best} is the part at the very end commencing at 4:52 until the song ends at 5:18. It is Keith Richard at his best {playing rhythm guitar} along with Taylor. They are playing the basic "riff" of the song in unison and that is rock and roll at its very best {Jagger is also very good doing his thing as are Watts and Wyman.} Riveting.

I got see Mick in Newark and in Boston with the Stones, was amazing. I wish he did more than a couple songs tho. My mother saw them in '69 and '72 in Boston, I have the bootlegs of the shows she went to, brilliant performances.

The London version has the cool intro. But my favorite is the Philadelphia 2nd show. Relentless electricity. In awe still after listening every day for a week and a half straight.

@@jme23 Well I prefer the first show but there both killers. Classic examples of why the Stones were selling out 75,000 seat arenas in less than an hour...and NO internet!!!
