@counter-weightmedias22634 жыл бұрын
Syfoll They started working on this album before those two started being made, actually.. Then again, you could argue that every album after Sgt Peppers that was psychedelic was unoriginal. That’s just not true, to make music within a genre like this isn’t copying. This album honestly sounds way more psychedelic than Sgt Peppers, not Piper but still. Piper was it’s own beast, yet I doubt the Stones even knew who Floyd were until they finished this project
@Syfoll4 жыл бұрын
@@counter-weightmedias2263 Sgt Pepper started recording in november 1966. Piper started recording in February 1967 and Her Majesties same in February. Pepper was released in May '67, Piper in August '67 and Her Majesties in December '67. Plus, considering what a radical departure it is from their usual sound and the fact that they never did an album like this one again, supports my idea. Floyd and Beatles were already doing psychedelic stuff, each in their own way by spring 1966. Also, the Stones probably knew about Floyd. They were the premiere underground act from late 1965 to 1967 and they signed with EMI in early 1967 and had 2 hit singles in Arnold Layne and See Emily Play.

The reason it was scoffed so much is because it was a departure albeit a brief one from the r&b roots which made the Stones. Jagger still likes the album but Brian Jones hated it. In a way they did try to copy the Beatles but realized it was not a good idea so they returned to their rock & roll sound. Many music critics say the 1968 single Jumpin' Jack Flash got them back on track followed later that year by Beggar's Banquet.

For sure... it has it's own cult following and is now much more highly regarded than ever. I don't know who put all these great moving shadowbox videos together over the last 2-3 years but their freaking GREAT! These add so much more texture and visuals to one of the greatest panned albums in the past 50 years. Someone put a lot of thought and time in the art work, thank you!! This little psychedelic number was beyond the norm of say 'Sgt Pepper' with it's sterile studio songs. This is truly just what the trippy hippies wanted in an out of mind and body experience rolled in to one. Brilliant lyrics, great melodies, and yes, even insightful druggy gnomes of wisdom..? I now have at least 12 copies of the original kaleidoscope cover in storage. Bravo Stones for your thought provoking style and risk you took, cause the next 6 albums are truly your swan songs despite what the critics said about this one. Remember this, No Jones, No Stones! :)

Torrry marrs I do not know if you are aware. Of an interview that Anita palenberg gave which showed up on a DVD called just for the record 1960s stones and she said that Brian Jones was not a fan of the psychedelic music, in her words he thought it was a bunch of rubbish. He wanted to stick with the African American blues of ppl like Willie Dixon, Alexis coroner and robert Johnson. He pretty much performed this whole album under duress.
@torrymarrs26429 ай бұрын
I can appreciate that BUT, I wonder if it was because Mick and Keith were running the show now and not him? Brian was truly a fan of the American blues scene and knew his chops and artists, but the record company wanted more pop music for the masses. Guess we'll never really know will we? Cheers mate> good observation on your part. Willie Dixon all day long! Howl;'n Wolf as well!@@theanswerisinthebackofyourhead

@@torrymarrs2642 yes. By 67 Mick and Keith had completely and fully taken over, the Redlands drug bust of 67 really took a toll on Brian's ability to get a visa to your with them in 69 when they toured America, 67 was a yr of partying for them and they did not promote satanic majesties request or between the buttons as far as a tour is concerned, they did ed Sullivan show in 67 but that was before the Redlands drug bust and did performances on ready steady go, and top of the pops. His influence with the band was starting to slip away in 67. He was not a fan of the psychedelic era, he was so ripped out of his head and Mick and Keith snatched his leadership roles away from him and as a result of Jagger and Richards song writing ability made it easier for them when it came to a power grab, but think about it. If they had followed Brian's vision, they would have fizzled out completely as a r&b band by 1971, give or take a yr, and rock n roll was truly in and r&b covers by other artists was not going to cut it for long term fame and wealth

In the early Stones days , everyone gave them the gears. Especially the Press, as well as nearly all of the older generation. It only served to toughen up The Rolling Stones. I don't know if much good came out of *Satanic Majesties* We had a go at anything we wanted to do - and most of the time we did it ourselves... In those days if you wanted a tabla you had to try and play the thing, which is what we all did. *Mick* would be banging away on something, I'd be banging something. It was _Let's play this song all together_ It was actually a lot of fun rather than a musical revolution. *_Charlie Watts, 2003_*
