I think the mirror was meant to make the mouse think the plank was longer and it was safe because there was another mouse on it. If they don't think they're getting towards the end they won't be hesitant. That's my guess at least.

For the hybrid trap, it seemed that they were cautious of the plastic footing. See how they actively keep a single foot on the wood part. Try painting on the transparent plastic. Adds grip and perhaps won't spook the rats instantly.

Mice have poor vision and they are nocturnal, i.e. it will be really dark inside that bucket, usually. They can make out basic shapes in residual light because they have a reflective layer behind the retina just like cats, though. It's still doubtful whether this mirror accomplishes anything.

Wouldn't the holes that regulate the water level be a design flaw as they provide a good starting hole for mice and rat to chew through? If they're swimming in the bucket and just swim over to it they can potentially grab onto the edge of the hole and then knaw on the plastic until it's big enough to escape. Just drawing a line on the inside for the correct water level would be smarter.

@@brentsido8822 good thing about soapy water is it will drown any fleas they have as well. In normal water the fleas will bail from the mouse and either float on the surface tension, or create a little bubble of air around themselves, also relying on surface tension in a different way. Soapy water eliminates this problem.

Most animals fail the mirror self-recognition test, so the mirror could be a genius distraction addition to the walk the plank trap. I would always just get a big white bucket about the size of one of those garbage cans, get a metal coat hanger and unfold it then stick it through a can. You balance the can over top of the middle with some peanut butter on the can, when the mouse tries to get across itll spin and they fall. It's an easier way to do it at home

Hi Shawn, In the plank/mirror version, you mention magnets that hold the plank in place until it reaches the perfect balance point. What kind of magnets are used? Thank you.

Shawn, you make some pretty good traps, but ants are a huge problem for my family, especially during the fall. Any suggestions?

In the hybrid trap, aren't you supposed to put bait in the hole above the bottle tip ? Just like you did with your test mouse.

Am I the only one who can see a significant difference between Shawn's mice and wild mice? It's just, with the hair/fur,Shawn's pets have a much shinier, almost glossy look. The wild mice look like they need a trip to the local barbers.

Haven't seen a mouse in my house in years....it might have something to do with me having Shawn's video playlist playing nonstop on repeat when I go to sleep

Perhaps the mirror takes the nervous edge off the mice as they think they are not alone and there for not in danger.....or it could make them believe there is competition for the bait and there for more willing to charge in and get some before that other guy eats it all!

Boy oh boy does that plank work when it's adjusted right. For us regular folk, with no mice to help us, the can may be the best bet though.

The mirror might make them curious to see what is moving in it, so they get close to sniff it or have their whiskers touch it to see what it is.

Awesome traps! I wonder if the mirror entices the mouse to move forward through one of the following reasons. 1. The mouse sees another mouse and wants to beat it to the bait. 2. The mouse sees another mouse and wants to be sociable by moving closer and sniffing it. 3. It sees another mouse, and feels comfortable. "Hey, one of my homies is here - it's all good!" LOL

The way to fix the rolling plank is to put a slick material on top of the wood part, no grip no save, they'll fall in,

The mirror is so that the mouse think's he can walk all the way across. Kinda like an optical illusion since they don't recognize themselves in the mirrors. They see a mouse on the other side coming close to them and not falling so they continue to walk.
