Most people, cops or otherwise, are like that. Many of them are likely parents themselves. We're hard-wired to protect kids, even if they aren't our own (even me, though I am not a father myself, if I see a seemingly unattended kid I always keep an eye on them out of the corner of my eye just in case something happens and I need to intervene). There's a reason why people who victimized or killed kids very rarely survive prison unless they are kept in solitary confinement/protective custody. The moment the other inmates find out you're in for something involving children, you're living on borrowed time and will have a target on your back for every second that you're in there. Larry Lawton, a former jewel thief who did time in federal prison has talked about this exact thing, and even told a story of a guy who was nearly killed in prison because the other inmates found out he was locked up for preying on children. It's pretty much universal that kids are always off-limits even to hardened criminals. So the escaped inmate here would likely have a target on his back from the moment he goes back into lockup and the other inmates find out that he held a kid as a hostage during his escape attempt.
