I really wish they had a dentist come to school around grade 6 and teach children proper dental care and the consequences of lack there of. Similar to sex education or DARE class when they would bring a police officer in to teach you the dangers of drugs. This would save many adults tremendous heartache!

Just got a root canal yesterday. I was very nervous for the procedure, mainly because I have a strong gag reflex. I’m happy to report to all of those like me that the procedure was quick and painless. Just communicate to your Dr. I told them about my gag reflex and they were very patient and did everything slowly. The relief was WELL worth it 👍

An example of what is wrong with healthcare in this country: I was given a choice. Root canal and crown or extraction. I know I don’t have to tell you Whitney, the cost difference. The fact that insurance doesn’t usually cover anything they consider “cosmetic” care. Same thing going to a dermatologist. I’m not taking out a second mortgage to pay for this stuff! Now I have a space where a tooth used to be. A proper understanding of dental care was not taught to me as a child. Now I’m paying for that lack of knowledge. I wish I’d had you to listen to 55 years ago! Thank you being here and giving us this science and fact based information!

@@basedkaren51 Yes! This! My parents taught me nothing about proper oral hygiene. Cavity after cavity and I never learned a thing. It’s sad that I didn’t start really taking care of my teeth until it was kind of too late.

Get them removed, the bacteria will cause you many issues down the line. They're dead teeth now.

Also, try to have an endodontist perform the procedure, if you can. They are the root canal experts. While the root canal failure rate isn't high, it is much lower if you see an endodontist equipped with a microscope and special imaging so that they can better see the canals. I work for an oral surgeon, and most of the failed root canals we see have been done by regular dentists decades ago... technology has come a long way since then!

The statement that "modern research has shown patients with multiple endodontic treatments have a 45 percent reduced risk of cancer" is actually a misinterpretation of modern scientific data. In fact, the researchers who conducted the study did not claim any statistically significant connection between multiple endodontic treatments and a reduced rate of cancer.

A hygienist is only able to clean your teeth and assist in dental procedures. They themselves cannot preform any dental procedures such as fillings, extractions or root canals. A dental hygienist can work more independently in some states but they cannot open a fully functioning dental clinic without the involvement of a licensed dentist. In the US I believe this is accurate to the best of my knowledge. Essentially the hygienist cleans your teeth, while a licensed Dentist, (A Doctor) does the work on your teeth.

You'll have to get them extracted eventually. They weren't saved, they were killed. They no longer have blood flow or nerves. They're infected since the immune system can no longer access them and the infection will just get worse. Had to get one of mine pulled, huge jaw cavitation and infection under it. This lady doesn't know what she's talking about.

"Root canals cause cancer", that's so silly.

There are credible links to the bacteria in root canals and a whole host of diseases. They cause a break down of natural systems because you basically have low level chronic sepsis in a root canal tooth. Cancer is generally a metabolic disorder so anything that disrupts cellular metabolism can lead to cancer especially if you're experiencing it chronically.
