The system they put into place was intended to GUARANTEE that only those with funds for private schooling would get a decent education. Public schools are not SUPPOSED to teach you how to think, reason, and ask the questions the "leaders" don't want you to think of. They aren't SUPPOSED to give you a level playing field with the children of the "leaders". It is intended to have you believe authority, question nothing, and stay in your place. It really is sad how every single immigrant group that's here long enough seems to produce lots of people who simultaneously brag about their own families coming here with nothing and overcoming discrimination to prove the bigots of the past wrong, and are completely convinced that THIS time, today's bigots are right about the immigrants coming now. There was nothing superior about my Polish great-grandmother, for example, compared to many of the poor immigrants and asylum seekers arriving today. One of the things to also keep in mind about how and why conspiracy theories spread is that some of the most pernicious ones are rooted in A) issues that appeal deeply to a substantial group of people, B) unresolved questions regarding events with negative impact or else pervasive social ills, and C) severely impaired ability of individuals to think critically about such events and to distinguish between what they THINK and what they FEEL, which very often happens in times of stress and conflict. Some people may handle it better than others, but the majority of us cannot be expected to think clearly when we are under duress. As social creatures, humans will seek out the comfort of groups in times of crisis - it's how we make sense of those big, scary things that overwhelm us. After all, there's power in numbers, right? Unfortunately, this same drive is also a critical vulnerability - because if we don't all have tools with which to make sense of our own sentiments, and also to recognize if/when the groups we turn to are saying or doing really bad things, we essentially risk ceding our autonomy and what power we have to something EVEN WORSE than what scared us in the first place. This is how dangerous cults form, but also organized religions, national identity movements, political ideologies... and even militaristic groupthink that talks of promoting unity while also normalizing violence. I wish I could say there was an easy patch for this vulnerability, but it's going to take serious investments in our healthcare and education infrastructure, and also serious divestment from the military industrial complex. I mean, if the military has such a surplus of ordnance that they can straight up abandon it overseas, or else give it away to police departments for free, I think they can more than afford a budget cut or two, especially since the "forever war" is finally over. #MedicareForAll #EducationForAll #MakeTheMilitaryPay

MLK was a pastor. Cornel West is a pastor, and a teacher of pastors. Harvard University was founded as an institution to train clergy. Yale was founded by a reverend who was the religious leader of the New Haven colony. Princeton was founded by four ministers, as an institution to train ministers. In all of the early colonies, "freedom of religion" meant we get to pick our own as the official religion.
