I often hear him referred to as the Goat. I remember him on south street playing on the corner every Saturday with the Square Roots. Eventually the police were on edge because people came far and wide to see the first Rap Band playing with an upright bassist and Quest on drums and Black thought and the Original Kenyatta on the Mic. I’m amazed and proud of the success and influence that they have had on this industry..

At 18 I fell in love with The Roots the very first time I heard Do You Want More!?!! on cassette in my Honda Civic. When it ended with the title track (and Rahzel fooling me with his DJ beatboxing) I kept driving and played it again as I had never heard anything like what they’d tapped into. Digable Planets and Tribe tried the jazzy hip hop thing but nothing like these guys. They incorporated their musicality full circle being the first to be brave enough to try something completely different by using a band instead of just 2 turntables to express their version of hip hop. Since then I’ve become a fierce fan and have proudly watched them climb the ranks into one of the most respected groups in the game. I had the pleasure of meeting Tariq Trotter (and the crew) in Vancouver during the Illadelph tour and you couldn’t meet a kinder, more humble dude. They deserve everything they’ve accomplished and they’ve still yet to peak!! Legendary? Hell yes.
@tutuletters66642 жыл бұрын
Your comment is so good, yet so bad. Say what you want about Digable Planets. They were just a flash in the pan. A Tribe Called Quest didn't "try the jazzy Hip Hop thing". They created it and they changed Hip Hop in the process. As a matter of fact, there wouldn't be a Roots if there was no Tribe. Black Thought would tell you that. The Roots may be your favorite, but unlike A Tribe Called Quest they have not reached legendary status. Some would even argue that they're not even Hip Hop because they're a band. The Roots' contribution was more towards neo soul. They're actually the architects of that sound. It's a wave that they created. They also showed the world how Hip Hop should be played by a band. These are great contributions. Maybe someday they'll get the respect that they deserve.
