As a casual guitarist & drummer, I always notice the groove, the beat initially. Lyrics come second or last. 20 years later, that still holds true. Yes, the lyrics are on point, but the seemingly simple beat, bassline & guitar melody do more than anchor the song. ❤

I remember first hearing this song in the early 2000's when I was in middle school. Hearing it now it takes me back to those times. Today, As a guy in his 30's who doesn't really have his life together, listening to this brings back memories of simpler times and provides me a brief getaway from Life's troubles such as financial difficulties, my parents getting older and loneliness when your friends are getting married, having kids or in stable long term relationships. Music like this really provides brief moments of happiness for so many of us that were kids or coming up in this era. We're in this together guys and I hope we all make it and get through whatever we're going through!

+douglas douga Erykah is singing her part and Eve is rapping the second verse. "You Got Me" was co-written by musician Jill Scott, who recorded vocals for the song's chorus and bridge. Her part was subsequently re-recorded by Badu at the insistence of MCA Records, who wanted a higher-profile collaboration for the album's official lead single (at the time, Scott was relatively unknown outside of Philadelphia ). When the group later went on tour, Scott joined them during performances of the song. The original version was later released on the 2005 compilation Home Grown! The Beginners Guide to Understanding the Roots, Volume One.
