You are right about individual differences. Things like grip strength, hand size, limb length and hand eye coordination all make a difference.

I have been looking at the new Rossi revolvers and one huge plus that I noted is that they use the superior old style Smith action with hammer mounted firing pin and hammer block (slide) v.s. the trendy new transfer bar system.

When I had my Rossi 462, I put about 700 rounds through it, about 600 of which were Fiocchi 142 gr Truncated Cone .357 Magnum ammo. I bought it new and owned it for about 9 months. The FFL I sold it to swore up and down that the lockup was loose, but at that time I was new to revolvers and didn't know if this was true or not. With my SP101, it was a good gun, but there were always fliers due to the tang grip frame. Always a bit of wobble. With my S&W snubbies I always shot a bit low, but the Taurus 605...well that gun is my most accurate .357/.38 I have shot. I am always surprised at how the point of impact seems to be the same no matter the ammo and have done my fair share of 5 yard one hole groups. I don't like how the Taurus extractor screw gets loose a lot, but as long as I periodically finger tighten it, it's about the best snubby I have owned other that the LCR.

Sam, I had to laugh about your endorsement of the 605. Yesterday was an anomaly. Usually the 605 or the 856 or the 85 are the best shooters for me. By the way, I used blue loctite on the cylinder screw of the 856 that kept backing out. But, I've seen this over and over again. In the accuracy department I can take a Taurus revolver and a comparable S&W and sometimes I'll shoot one better and on the next try will shoot the other better.

I've had my cylinder jam up on a Taurus 605 and stop turning a few times. It was caused by the primers from the fired rounds I was using backing out of the brass under pressure and wedging the cylinder after a few shots. If this happens to you again, check your fired brass to see if the primers are still flush and if they have scrape marks from dragging and then jamming.

The grips that were on that Ruger weren't bad grips, but for my hand shape and size they were uncomfortable and caused me to line the sights up as to where I was shooting low to the point of aim. You wouldn't think it, but grips can change the gun's point of aim.

Very interesting comment about the firing pin breaking off. I had the exact same gun and it did break off. Had a gunsmith put a case hardened pin in. No issues. Sold it a long time ago. Wish I had kept it...

I'll be taking my new 3" Ruger SP101 out to the range in a few day's time 🔫, along with my 4" Taurus Tracker (I'm going to be shooting some .357 Magnum with it)... I'm going to experiment with some .38 Special +P with my SP101; I think they might be the perfect balance for it. 😀

Most experts, and I don't count myself as one, tend to advise carrying .38 Plus P in a revolver for daily carry as opposed to .357. Three-fifty-seven is a man stopping round. But, you also have audible disorientation from the sound, recoil and flash, and a slightly slower time in getting shots on target. So, I think you are making a good decision with the SP101.

I have not the 640, but my older Smiths have the best trigger action. Because of it's heavy weight for a small revolve I passed on the SP101 and got a Security Six instead. Nice shooting Greg as always.

I'd never done any kind of comparison with the 640 and was surprised how smooth the trigger action was until I did this test. A Security Six was a great find. I don't have one at this time, but I prefer them to the GP100.

That question pops up from time to time. Charter is a small American company and you want to root for the underdog. Taurus is a very large international corporation much bigger than S&W and Ruger, so a product comparison to Charter is really unfair. Too, you don't see Charter often in upstate SC, so I haven't had much opportunity to look them over. However, like the Rossi I recently bought, I've been keeping an eye out for one.

IMHO - One of the things I experience a lot on reloads is that they can drag on a revolver cylinder rear wall; caused by the primer of the bullet not being flush on the brass so it drags on back of the cylinder wall. It could be also, as you mention, an OAL issue. A really cool compare of revolvers.

Greg I owned a S&W model 640 in 38 Special, it ran like a well oiled machine. S&W has now chambered all the steel J frames up to 357 Magnum, and all the Airweights up 38 Special +P. IE the model 60 is chambered in 357. Love the Ruger SP101, mine is a 4 inch chambered in 32 H&R Magnum 😉

Definitely easy to carry, but a handful to shoot. A good set of grips make a big difference. Summer time I often pocket carry a 642 with Hideout grips from Precision Specialties.

The LCR in 327mag is great. Lots of muzzle blast, but less recoil than 357mag and you get an extra round. Plus you have the options of shooting the 32mag and 32 S&W Long. Buffalo Bore makes a couple of sweet hard cast loads in that load. Gun Sam has a nice review of it.

Interesting info on the trigger of the Rossi. I collect Smith & Wesson revolvers from the 1970s and they all have very smooth triggers. My Taurus revolvers also have great triggers (85, 65) and my 2 older Taurus's are more accurate than any of my Smiths. I have a Colt Detective Special from 1971 and that trigger does stack, so more effort is needed to make it break. Regardless, the best solution is to pick the one that you shoot best and make it your carry gun.

Well thought out philosophy of use and ownership about the Rossi. Its an experts' collectable. One of many not a 1 and only in your battery so its a justified luxury investment. Hope it grows in value. As far as the spectre of firing pins being prone to breakage I also have read the same on the forums, sometimes cited by gunsmiths who should know, and they traced the fault to improper heat treatment of that part. Could a replacement be made by an outfit like Power Custom if needed ? Also what mainspring did Rossi use, a S&W K frame type flat leaf or a conventional coil spring ?

Good questions. I read on the Taurus.net form about a guy who re-worked a Model 36 firing pin for his. The Rossi uses a coiled spring. I've been considering selling it to an FFL I know, but I'd have to be up front about the recall and the other possible issues.

@@LionquestFitness Your honesty is commendable but if you part with it you may regret that. You are mindful of the flaws which is no big concern because you have other revolvers and know how to remedy these, good tip about the J frame firing pin. And possibilities with J frame spring adaptability. If and when you sell it it will be only that 1 time, forever. And in my humble estimation since its discontinued, it may become something like the Colt SF VI in value, I bought mine in 1999 for $400 + sales tax and have shot it, its used, but now on gunbroker new in the box these are a few thousand$ if anyone is actually buying. I liked the look of the RP63, but I've yet to see one in the mom and pop gun stores I frequent. However, since I've watched a couple of reviews of the Henry Big Boy Revolver I've fallen hard for that one. The only problem is - no one has one yet; even online. And supposedly the few that have gotten out are being scalped for over $200 more than MSP. So maybe the RP63 may be the consolation prize for this year after all. If I can find one.

Greg, my first revolver for security work was a Taurus 66 with the 38 spl plus p. When firing 6 rounds fast fir the PPC/NRA qualification course , I found that my clynder would bind a little until I slowed down just a bit. Does your Rossi have the same problem?

Not sure. I was firing some reloaded .357 at a range that requires a two second pause. I'm thinking it was the reloaded ammo and maybe a cylinder bored too tight?

I have also seen the side screw, that holds the crane in place, sheer off at the bottom in the Rossi 462 which caused the crane and cylinder to fall out when the cylinder was opened. But they are pretty guns. I would buy one, but not carry one.

@@LionquestFitness It must have been a common problem because when I explained the problem to the friend that brought me the gun asking for help, the factory was backordered on replacement screws. He finally received one but it took a couple of months. This was back in 2008-ish.

Two things. One, you just don't see Charter much in this area. I've only come across one snubbie in the last few years. Second, decades ago I had their Undercover model and wasn't very happy with it. Rightly or wrongly that soured me on Charter. But, I'll still keep an eye out for one to buy, review and possibly keep.

Great shooting, Greg. Out of the revolvers presented, I'd lean towards the S&W or the SP101 (I have actually owned one in the past). That said, I really want a Kimber K6S,, and a Bond Arms Roughneck derringer to back up my S&W 627 PC. I'd also throw in the stainless Chiappa Rhino 3 inch, but they're terribly expensive.

The problems that I've heard with the re-loads is that the recoil tended to separate the bullet from the case a bit and make them work out a bit to far for the revolver cylinder. I heard that's not much of a problem for the semi auto's. I tend to buy only brass case ammo. I also always buy new ammo from a good seller on ammo seek. Some places even offer free shipping on orders $125.00 Others sites offer free shipping on orders of $250.00 or more. If I need ammo for different guns, I just a few boxes from the same site if they have a decent deal. I don't know if all Taurus's are like mine but if I slowly pull the trigger, the hammer comes back and clicks twice before firing. I can pull the trigger and hold it on the second click, then it will fire just like a single action with very little effort squeezing the trigger. I know Taurus made those Rossi's, But is there a Rossi that's better than a Taurus? also did the Rossi have a transfer bar? also was wondering if the springs worked the same as the Taurus? thanks for the video. Boy, you can tell that video was during the height of COVID because I wasn't getting regular haircuts! That was also when I was first trying various loads from Georgia Arms, which has pretty much become my go to. Interesting comment on the two clicks for the Taurus revolvers. It is slight, but yes there are two clicks. I did find one difference between the 605 I bought about six years ago and the old 85 between the newer 856's. The triggers on the older five shot guns seem to be more assertive and crisp as compared to the two 856's I have. Probably because of the larger cylinder. I'm pretty sure the Rossi's had a type of safety block, because it wasn't sliding into position like it was supposed to and that was the source of the dropped discharges. But it was different from the transfer bar safeties on the current Taurus and Smith revolvers with the hammers without a pin mounted on them. The Rossi's did have a firing pin mounted on the hammer. There was a lot I liked about that Rossi in the video. But, the more research I did, the more I found reports of reliability issues, so I went ahead and sold it to an FFL, letting him know it was on a recall list.

I have a Kimber 1911, which is a really fun gun at the range, but it too is "ammo-particular." I finally got KZbin to work. Whoopi! You know which one I'd choose. Their's a video on KZbin with a man who broke the firing pin on his Taurus Raging Hunter. He said he'd shot some practice round's and did 50 dry firing. Everyone said the same thing, with Taurus you have to use snap caps ( vroom ) or empty brass. I use both with my revolver's even if the mfg company says you don't have to. If you use them all the time, you won't forget when you have to. It's a shame all 3 Taurus revolvers I had no luck with them because they have really good triggers. My first 85 the cylinder would lock up, my 2nd 85UL the key lock activated itself and I couldn't undo it. My 3rd and last 856 if I staged the trigger I would get misfires. It seems the only Taurus I have any luck with is my TCP738 in 380. It's been 100% reliable with all the different ammo I was able to get and I can hit a steel silhouette with it constantly at 25 yards. I hope to find a pre lock S&W 642.

Great video . I have shot some factory 357 in my rossi . No problems have shot more 38s. Also have s.w. mod 37 and for me. I shoot rossi better.

Rossi website has Every Serial Number under recall Because I bought my DA SP101 used, I believe it was given a trigger job, because it is sure n smooth. Everything I'd expect from a revolver. Watch for the knowledge, Stay for the music
