@@muhacnt7988 once the world collapses, insanity and boredom is all anyone is left to contend with. One of the main themes and pretty much the strongest theme in the film is trying to find purpose in a purposeless world. Guy Pearce's only purpose in life, at this point, is retrieving his car so he can bury his last love. He's a "Rover."

It wasn't until watching this clip I connected him throwing that rock at the dogs to Guy Pierce killing him. Watching Pierce now I can see that he's struggling not to kill the guy from the moment he throws the rock, only holding off because he's got to get to guns.

I can't take credit for coming up with this, but I'd argue the movie's actually about love. Guy Pearce's character does all this shit because his dog was the last thing he loved in the world and he wants to give it a proper burial.

Nihilism on steroids for sure. It’s why it didn’t do well in the theaters and that it came out around the same time as Thunder Road. Two movies that are both post-apocalyptic and well done but very different from each other.

This movie is an amazing lesson on not coping with anger, false letting-go, denial and swallowing the consequences. Everybody has his/her second there, a pair, only Eric (Pearce) goes alone. Then when he finally finds a partner in action, Rey (Pattinson), he manipulates him and then turns into a monster.

He’s a ruthless and hard hearted son of a bitch but I love it’s heavily implied that he was the type of man that once loved and might still. It’s just that the world’s random acts of cruelty has driven him to close his heart. But even then he still feels and still has a conscious at the end of the day. He’s violent and angry but all his all his violence and anger is dedicated to trying to find his car so he can bury his dead dog. He just wants to bury last remaining companion. And by the end of the film he ends laying to rest another loyal companion. Even though he starts off treating Ray like he’s annoying stray he has to tolerate, towards the end he starts to feel genuine sympathy for Ray. He relates to to his plight of being lost and alone and seems to genuinely want to protect him. And in the end he laments his death, weeps over his body and mourns for two rovers.
