Absolutely love these cars. From a time when Britain had a well respected motor industry. And most manufacturers were British owned. And indeed, most cars on our roads were British too.

I grew up around Rover cars in Australia. They were very rare here but my Dad loved them and would often turn up with another pre-loved one without notice, after trading in the faithful model he had. I rode around in his Rover 16 when I was a toddler in the 1950s and vaguely remember sitting on the external running board eating lunch at family picnics. He never bought new. At one stage he bought a 1957 Rover 90 that had been originally taken to Singapore by a British citizen and then exported to Australia. Eventually this became the first of my vehicles. They were very comfortable vehicles, albeit a bit sluggish off the mark but once wound up the long stroke motor would cruise all day, and if not careful take me way above the posted limit. Thanks for the tour around the interior of your P5b. I could almost smell the richness of the leather. Even my Rover 90 was ahead of its time when compared to local cars. It had electric wipers whereas other vehicles still used vacuum driven wipers which were ridiculous, as they operated at a snails pace when motoring and went almost into orbit when the engine was idling.

What a beautiful car, better than anything I would want to buy today. Roger Moore drove one identical to this one in the 1970 film, "The man who haunted himself". I watched it as a child and loved the car then. The memory of this great film has stuck with me ever since.

What a wonderful video and a wonderful car. It was so ahead of its time with those rear seat cupholders. And what a credit to the upholsterer that renovated the seats. A proper Rover and a piece of history!

On my bucket list of cars, the Rover P5 is one of the top ones. I've loved them since I was a kid. Total elegance without any air of flashiness or snobbery like most luxury cars feel they have to have. I like some of those too sometimes, but the P5 still is unique like that. No wonder the Queen was a fan.

Truly sumptious car, totally amazing and built to a standard that must have made the accountants at Rover wince at the time. The P6 was inline with its market in terms of fit, finish and quality whereas the P5b took the fight to almost Rolls Royce in terms of quality and build. The last great Rover, such as shame the SDi could not have combined the great design with some of the Rover values around engineering and quality. What an absolute shame. Thank you for the detailed video.

My memory of the time in the 60s when my dad had a Rover 105 the press dubbed the Rover "The Poor Man's Rolls Royce" - quality wise it deserved that tag. Fuel consumption was awful - I had a P5 3 Litre for a week, it managed 12 miles per gallon! So went back to the Triumph Vitesse 6 !

What a lovely tour of a great British icon. Forgotten in many ways. Lovely presentation, calm & relaxed, as I’m sure how the passengers we’re accustomed too. I am not very old, but walking to school in the early 80’s , I always passed a P5, looked into it & admired the interior, as I did with a gold Jensen Interceptor S111. But that’s a different story. What I love, & still do, is the analogue experience with the switches. There is nothing better that pushing, pulling dials or toggle switches for me. I just love the engineering behind it. Fantastic video, thank you for sharing.

I spent half my childhood in the back of a P5, (with my 3 siblings) AWW 495 B.... How is that for a 50 year old memory!! Dark Green with a caravan on the back for most of the summer. Dad then traded up to a beautiful Coupe, Blue with a cream roof, BWR 738 H. It took the family and a caravan all over France at least 10 years in a row. At speeds over 80 mph at times!! Dad wanted to get there :-))) only real trouble we had was Dad locked us out of the car!!! Had to get a Gendarme to break in......I am smiling now at all the happy memories....Awesome cars :-)))

Shirley boy my father took myself and my brother to the south of France, Monaco and even to Italy. Pisa to be exact and went up the leaning tower (which was closed soon after to the public) in a Ford Fiesta. Even slept in it somewhere around the French and Italian border. We lived in central Lancashire so it was a fair drive. No caravan, though, obviously.

I had a 1973 Coupe and was the best car I have ever owned, a real head turner. Used it 7 days a week to get to work and never broke down. Had the rear springs retempered. Used to spend all day Sundays cleaning and polishing her. She finally succumbed to rusting inside the front door pillars. A superb drive and in kickdown mode, the front would rise and it would sounded like a Spitfire engine! Had to sell it cheap because of the rust but was still a reliable runner. I sold her as a car for banger racing at Hednesford Hills Receway so I actually cried as I watched her being driven away after looking after her for so many years.

I used to own a Rover 3 Litre and the one thing I remember was a switch on the binnacle that I'm sure was the reserve fuel tank switch but hold it the other way and the fuel gauge would read the engine oil level! The foot operated dip switch was a fantastic idea and oh, for a proper parking brake too, not those insane pressy button things you get today! As someone else said, brings back happy memories.

Very nice review, thank you. I used to own a LHD 1969 3,5 saloon (1978-1982), same exterior colour, but tan interior. It was the only car of this type ever imported new to Norway , and only chauffeur driven until I bought it. I loved this car and also took it on a grand tour of the continent and to the UK. The doorman at the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne, where we stayed for a few days, insisted that the car was parked right outside the main entrance, right next to a Silver Shadow. Wonderful memories. The car has been owned by several other enthusiasts since I sold it, and it’s still in excellent if not pristine condition, still in Norway.

That's fantastic! I love the interior gorgeous cream leather the upholsterers did a great job with the interior. That prime minister's pipe is a great little addition in the back there tells a story about these cars. I love all the quirky little items you've got in there like the old maps etc. These cars were made in Birmingham where I live, unfortunately the Rover factory in Longbridge closed down years ago but some of the site still survives today. It's worth noting that the Queen had a Rover P5 and the car was a firm favourite with a few prime ministers and MP's. I'm also a fan of the Rover P6 that replaced it.

My Dad had the 3.5 coupe it was built like a tank I gave someone a push start in a ford Capri, at his request after a gentle push and no luck bump starting it he waved his arm to go quicker so I gave it the beans and went up to around 60mph. I had reached the point I needed to turn off so slowed down. He gave me a thumbs up thank you for trying it get it going, as he moved away in front of me it had pushed the bumper into the back of the car with the bumper ends kicked out both sides like little wings. The over riders on the Rover was not even scuffed I doubt he was too pleased when he got out of the car and saw the mess it was in.

Lovely to see the car in such great condition. Brought back memories of a long road test in one, driven by my father who had the car in his workshop for service and tuneup. It was an early P5B Coupe owned by the head of some famous Hotels around Edinburgh and Scotland. A trip from South of Edinburgh to Lundin Links in Fife and to visit some relatives and to show the car to potential customers. Also my first experience of inertia reel seat belts, brought on by my father having to step on the brakes fairly hard when someone pulled out from a side road.

Thanks for that step back in time. I spent many hours polishing my late Father's black P5, his was the 3 litre manual with the overdrive stalk control on the steering column. Red leather interior. I really enjoyed driving that car and particularly the pub runs with my mates when everyone else was driving XR2's and 3's and Astra GTE's.....They all seemed so plastic in comparison to that lovely old Rover. Sadly it succumbed to rot in the end and he got more money for the number plate than the car!!!

To me it is the most beautiful Rover ever built , it just oozes quality and style . Although I love my Rover 75 1.8 Connoseur , wich has a lot of reminders in its interior to the old P5B , it is not really a match . Plastic chroom handels in sted of real metal , no hornring on the steeringwheel , no ventwindows , no wood allaround . A really fine car but just no P5B .................. I know here in Holland are still a few good and restored examples around , and one day I want to own one of these beautys ! Who needs a Merc anyway ?

This brings back memories. I used to wonder how my Dad dipped the lights without using his hands. Now I know. I’m sure the rear heater wasn’t a heated seat, but had rear-facing vents under the front seats. The rear seat was a bench seat. As a kid I used to sit on the rear arm rest and there was definitely no pull-out whisky table. Our car was the same colour. My Dad bought it brand new, but I can’t remember exactly what year, but likely 1970 to 1972. It was sold in the 1990s.

Very apt to see this car in Austria. In green it was also a favourite of 1970s to 80s chancellor Kreisky who used it for travel in office. It is in a museum in Vienna now. But since his war-exile in Britain he also privately owned rovers. This model oozes English charm in a way that does not exist anymore. Thank you for the presentation, much appreciated.

Nobody recognizes the car here in Austria, but they all know Kreisky. It's the only connection with Austria the car has. I must go and see his in the museum next time I'm in Vienna. I wonder where his other Rovers went? Thanks for watching the video, glad you enjoyed it.

For a 50 -year-old car it's got everything! a pity they don't make it now because it would sell.

@@troo_story I'm sure that a few aftermarket parts on the engine would improve the mpg. 30 MPG is just fine for such a heavy car.

I thought there would be more instruments like an oil pressure gauge , perhaps a rev counter. I also didn't like the way odd switches were located in random places, it would be better if everything was on one panel. I suppose if you had a chauffeur, stuff like that didn't matter so much. Still my dream car though!

@ A simple job to build them into a new car, I guess the retail price for such a car as this...£ 45,000 for a character car, that's cheap.

I enjoyed the tour of the Rover. I owned a 1968 3 ltr, and she was two toned green. What a beautiful car. My wife made me sell it and buy a Marina coup. She couldn't park the rover because she didn't have power steering. It was three speed with overdrive, and had a valve radio that took 5 minutes to come on. I still miss that Rover, and I remember I got $1200.00 for her in 1979.

Thanks for watching, John. The power steering is so light on these cars, your wife could park it with your little finger. It was a point the brochure was keen to make at the time, especially for the ladies!

So fine, so elegant. I never met one in Italy, only a few in Greece on vacation when i was a kid and liked so much. Very original, desirable, much more than a RR. Have to say I appreciate the Rovers in general

I owned a 1968 P5B many years ago, but although it had a few conveniences like power steering and auto gearbox I really preferred the earlier P4 which I had two of. The P4 was quieter, more solid and better made and had more of an air of quality and solidarity.

Lovely looking saloon, i've had a few of these, both 3 and 3.5 litre, saloon and coupe models. The two centre switches either side of the instruments, heater and wiper speed, and the panel lamp dimmer are all rheostat switches. They suffer from tarnished copper wire and spring metal contact, that can be seen inside the instrument pod. Take off the rront panel and they can be gently cleaned with fine steel wool, very fine abrasive paper or a plastic fibre abrasive pad. The fuel guage sender unit in the fuel tank suffers the same issues and gives erratic readings. It's a little more difficult to access as the fuel and 8s behind a panel in the boot. On the coupe models, the combined instrument is replaced by a tachometer, and there are 4 small round gauges, in paired pods hung under each side of the main instrument pod. In addition to the 3 guages, the 4th gauge is a battery voltage or ammeter. The rear heater is another smaller heater matrix and fan system. It can be shut off by a pull/push water valve on the upper rear bulkhead in the engine bay. Check that valve isn't seized, or has been shut off because the two exposed rubber water hoses, running under the car to the rear unit have failed. You will quickly lose all coolant and overheat if that valve is open and those hoses are in poor condition.
