They recorded 7 albums and a lot of singles, had many hits, were as famous as Abba in Europe in the 70's and were mainly touring in UK, France, Germany and Belgium. They split several times, there are now two bands touring plus another one with singer Paul who recorded Sugar Baby Love and who never was in the original group Alan sang the song live.

Yes Alan didn't sing Sugar Baby Love on the record (yet he sang Tonight including head voice) but he sang Sugar baby Love thousands of times live and still does it in 2018. (You can find many live recordings of SBL and other songs on KZbin). He also recorded a version of SBL that was broadcasted on BBC in 1974 that you can also find on YT. Paul Da Vinci recorded another song with a head voice just after SBL in his own name called "Your Baby Ain't Your Baby Anymore". This is the 1974 version of SBL with Alan's voice : kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6nXaml6iLuKgc0 Sounds different from the record but nice

No disrespect to Da Vinci, but Alan had to go out night after night and sing it live along with their whole set. He is something rare and has stood the test of time as a frontman. Love Alan Williams!!! Ive seen video of DaVinci... no contest!

​@@captainsemicolon You're wrong, it's Alan on the TOTP version of SBL, he re-recorded it especially for the BBC as Paul was not a member of the band. Also it's Alan who did the falsettto on Tonight. There never was any "live" performance at that time on TOTP. They just asked as a rule that the singer who did the miming had to be the same as the one who recorded the song. Alan recorded his voice just before the show as the Rubettes were never planned to participate to the show, but as The Sparks couldn't come they took their place. This is how the career of The Rubettes started, and Alan still sings all the original songs live in 2021 with his "new" Rubettes as the other original members left in 2019 to make Techno music, which Alan never wanted to do. I shot one of their last performances in France with original members, and Alan still sings SBL, Tonight, Little 69, Juke Box Jive, Juila and all their other songs from the 70's. Just check my channel there are several songs from this 2016 live performance. There never was any woman singing in the Rubettes except in one song of a 1994 CD.

He does have a good voice even at his age, and I am not denying that, but on that TOTP performance, its CLEARLY a woman singing. It has the timbre of a womans voice. Listen to his singing Ooh La La live in france for a good comparison of his actual falsetto voice.
