Ahead of the full podcast release tomorrow, Big Jim and Goodey take a look at a few extracts from Dylan Hartley's autobiography as he revealed just how brutal it was to play under Eddie Jones during his time as England captain.

For me, you two men are a pleasure to listen to. I really appreciate your directness and honesty. Nothing like people who, 'Say it as it is', and don't fuck about with their words. Bang on!

This is the co-writer's spin to sell a book....Eddie Jones always speaks glowingly and fondly of Hartley

Has similarities to joining the Royal marines. When you get to week 24 commando phase, if you can't get over the 6 foot wall with kit on etc or your a second out doing fireman's carry etc etc. Your out. Does anyone in the training team or troop that's left care. They gotta think about themselves. High pressure times high pressure jobs. All about money. Isn't everything. If you want to be the best at anything. It's gonna hurt!!

Its funny how Rugby is similar to Cricket. Cricket has become fully Profesional. Many of these themes or issues , are/ or were there as well.

From what I’ve actually heard from DH - and not reports - DH has the highest regard for EJ and vice versa. I haven’t read DH’s book but will. I hope it’s honest but doesn’t try to sacrifice people to make headlines. From DH’s interview on BBC, I don’t think it does. We want England to win every match; EJ wants to win every match. We should place our trust in the Head Coach to make the right decisions. We might think a decision is wrong - but only EJ has all the data; only EJ sees everything - so why should we, in partial ignorance, think we might know better? Clubs and England have, like all employers, a legal Duty of Care. When that employment ends, the employer has no further obligation.

Dylan has a book to sell. He played for England and as Captain, picked by Eddy Jones. When he was in trouble Eddy defended his captain. The truth is he was fucked. He has the option to retire at a young age. Good luck to him going forward.

Very pragmatic analysis by Goody. It happens in every walk of life. If you rock the boat at work you are fucked. ! 🤣

It must be why he has never really had a continuous coaching team

You mean Ford at 10, who has always been EJs 10?
@randyschwaggins3 жыл бұрын
Ford is a little knobend...spied for his dad in 2015, threw his toys out of the pram because Burgess was picked over him and then purposely made a horrendous penalty call v Wales which got us knocked out.

Rugby pod just kind of seems like rugby's version of loose women. It's all gossip and rumours and pretty much zero tactical analysis

For all he lacked around the park they could have used him in the scrum against south africa, George seems a bit weak for brutal tight 5's like South Africa and France.

@biggus dikis Mako got bullied they should have started with the stronger scrummager in Marler EJ said so himself in hindsight. As for Coley-never in a million years would have have thought he'd have to play 75 mins in a WC final it was pure bad luck KS got injured. The Beast is a handful and they knew they needed 55 mins from Sincks then 25 from Coley.

Goodey " I was lucky enough to go see England train and was gobsmacked at how brutal and intense it was" That statement should have been followed by " But nowhere near as intense or brutal as my shoving people out of the way at the buffet, or tackling waiters trying to remove plates of other people's leftovers before I can scoff them!"

Good servant for England and ran the line out particularly well but a limited player, the game moved on and anyone could see the last few season for Dylan he'd lost a step or 2. None should expect belly rubs and niceties at elite levels. EJ has run multiple teams and each player is a cog in the machine to beat the oppo, nothing more.

Alpha Cymru on what basis do you reach that conclusion? Words of more than two syllables? I don’t disagree, for the most part, with FRU but he has a legitimate right to his view and he expressed them without being nasty. I’m mostly an armchair critic now because so many years of rugby, in the front row, has buggered my body so much that I’m very limited in what I can do. I was lucky enough to play until I was 52 and took part in matches in several countries. The Lions in 2013 was a great experience where fans, from every country including Australia, bonded with friendship and respect. That’s an R, followed by a E, followed by a...........

Jones occupies the top job in England rugby and if he chooses to deliver this kind of news over the telephone and in this manner (to his previously chosen Captain), it could be regarded as extremely unprofessional, ignorant and unacceptable.....this type of behaviour does not fit the importance and reputation of that role.....don't care if he is a "character" or people try excuse his rudeness as his sense of humour, it is simply not acceptable

It’s not about what you think, it’s not about professionalism. It’s about results and it’s about the culture. Eddie Jones has created a winning culture based off honesty and hard work, with the core being honesty. We can’t criticise a coach for being honest, especially one who gets the best out of his team. This is a team that got knocked out of there own World Cup in 2015....with in 4 years they’ve won multiple six nations , a grand slam and were in a World Cup final. All because Eddie created a culture of honesty and drive. So to uphold that in the way you treat players is actually the opposite. It’s very professional, and sets an example for generations of players and coaches to come.
