Fascinating reference to the destruction of the american passenger pigeon, a flourishing native species. Hundreds of millions of them were sadly hunted and harvested to extincton to feed pioneers and early industrial workers in the 19th century.

Very much influenced by H.G. Wells' The Time Machine (an influence which is acknowledged in the story). If you're going to steal, steal from the very best.
