The Russian Mob’s Blackmarket Caviar | Episode 37: Poached! Counterfeit Caviar

Sturgeon caviar can fetch a pretty penny on the blackmarket. Just 1 pound can go for 100 to 150 dollars. Sy Ray was called in to investigate a potential poaching criminal enterprise involving the black delicacy and somehow all fingers pointed to the notorious Russian mafia. The problem was that the Russian mafia was everywhere.

Just a side note: Caviar can be harvested from live fish. It makes it more expensive and the texture is not the same but it lets one female sturgeon produce several years of eggs.

I learned about this is in the mid 1990s here in Tulsa. My dad would go snag for spoonbill at the Grand River Dam. Russians would be down there floating around the fisherman wanting the "roe". No way were they welcome! Game wardens were very nice but came around more often making sure no illegal fishing / harvesting was occuring
