I'm Russian, and I swear this whole movie could have been made in the USSR, just by switching the sides and language. It just looks so much like a typical 1960/70's soviet comedy movie, overall in setting and the way it's filmed. Kind of reminds us how similar the both sides actually were.

Yes!!!!! The moral of the story is true....... We are all human beings and we have much more in common than not..... We all love, dream, hope, and want happiness for our children. Sad how things can get so fouled up by "leaders"..... I love this old movie. I used to watch it with my parents when they were young and 30 something. I remember the way they would laugh about the old couple in the movie. .the old lady tied to a chair and hung up on the back of the door and her poor old DEAF HUSBAND, can't find her. They would say "that will be us when we are old"....... Now, both in their 80's, they are that old couple. ❤️ And the guy and his horse. 😂😂😂😂😂😂I can relate to that with my horse.

This movie was filmed in my hometown of Fort Bragg Ca and surrounding areas of Mendocino. They filmed one scene across the street from my house for a couple days all the actors even if they were not in the scene seemed to be there my mom baked cookies for all them. That group of actors Keith,Winters,Arkin,Law and the rest of them were so gracious and friendly to all of us. If I remember correctly the submarine was put together in Noyo Harbor and was made of Styrofoam blocks around a metal frame with a couple outboard motors for power.

Thanks Sky for your post. Really cool. The Director, Norman Jewison, was from Toronto, Canada. During this time of the cold war between the USA and the USSR, Jewison wanted to bring in a comedy movie that would point out that we're all the same. He did a great job.
@Vincent_Sullivan2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenmcdonald664 Indeed, he did a great job! I was under the impression that Mr. Jewison, aside from being the director of the movie, actually originated the story. Alex Barris, in his book "The Pierce Arrow Showroom is Leaking" (a great look at early television in Canada), recounts a story of being with a bunch of Canadian entertainment luminaries including Jewison isolated in a cottage somewhere and Jewison gave them a one man show (playing all the parts himself) of his idea for this movie. Needless to say they were all in stitches! Perhaps this response encouraged Jewison to carry on with the idea and eventually the movie was made.
@daveteds2 жыл бұрын
@@Vincent_Sullivan The movie is actually based off of a book called the Off-islanders by Nathaniel Benchley, but I think the book is not as good. Though it has the same basic premise, it is much more in the realm of dark humor, there is some actual violence, and it doesn't end with quite the same conciliatory message. The book has a few funny moments and the individual Russian crewmen are more developed as characters, but overall, the movie is a lighter, funnier and in my opinion better take on the premise.
