Neil Innes was a genius. This was actually not done in 68, that's part of the joke. It was done in 77. The Rutles did some amazing Beatles pastiches. All four Beatles liked the Rutles, although John warned them they could get sued by the copyright owners (not the Beatles themselves) for "Get Up and Go" (spoof of "Get Back") because it's so close. Everything on their original album is worth listening to, as are most of the songs on their follow-up album "Archaeology," especially "Back in '64" which is a bittersweet bit of nostalgia about the Beatles' -- sorry, Rutles' -- early days.

I'm pretty sure he was sued and if you bought the cd (or dvd) in since Neil innes got sued they had to change the credits now saying written by Lennon McCartney and Innes , previously he got away with just Innes. I have the album and dvd , it's such a brilliant pastiche, I hope Harri gets round to watching the whole film, for me it's better than Spinal tap as the music and story is fantastic.

George Harrison was involved in the project from the beginning. Producer Gary Weis said, "We were sitting around in Eric's kitchen one day, planning a sequence that really ripped into the mythology and George looked up and said, 'We were the Beatles, you know!' Then he shook his head and said, 'Aw, never mind.' I think he was the only one of the Beatles who really could see the irony of it all." Harrison said, "The Rutles sort of liberated me from the Beatles in a way. It was the only thing I saw of those Beatles television shows they made. It was actually the best, funniest and most scathing. But at the same time, it was done with the most love." 😊

HARRI, you really should watch their 1978 TV special "The Rutles: ALL YOU NEED IS CASH" This Parody of the Beatles' history is just hysterical. In this scene they are parodying an actual scene that was shown in the Beatles TV special "MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. The Rutles are wearing the same clothes (or very similar) to what the Beatles wore IN Magical Mystery Tour. The cast was made up of other cast members of "MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS ( MICHAEL PALIN ). Also the first original cast members of SNL ("Saturday Night Live") : BILL MURRAY, DAN AYKROYD, JIM BELUSHI, GILDA RADNER, AL FRANKEN. The Rolling Stones' MICK JAGGER and RON WOOD, and PAUL SIMON all played themselves. GEORGE HARRISON was ALSO in the cast dressed as a reporter wearing a gray wig, glasses, moustache and a light colored suit. THAT segment with GEORGE was REALLY funny when you see what is going on BEHIND him and his interviewee. (hint, in the REAL Beatles' history it was known that a LOT of things were being stolen from their APPLE CORP offices on Saville Row in London (where the "roof top" concert took place) BY some employees there and other hangers on that were around the offices frequently - THIS is what the Rutles are parodying in that scene with GEORGE HARRISON as a REPORTER. Everything you see in this video is parodying what you would see in the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour, particularly during the "I AM THE WALRUS" video, in fact at the SAME LOCATION that this segment of MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR was filmed. NEIL INNES who plays "RON NASTY" ( JOHN LENNON) wrote all these songs and indeed is VERY good in the "RON NASTY/John Lennon" character. Well, GEORGE is IN the TV special as I said, and since this was NOT made while the Beatles were an active group, but in 1978, AND they were ALL fans of MONTY PYTHON and ERIC IDLE (who plays "Dirk McQuickly" (Paul), MICHAEL PALIN, and NEIL INNES, I am sure that they ALL were on board with it. I heard that John was not too happy with "Yoko" portrayed as a female NAZI, but other than that...it was OK with them. The whole thing was BRILLIANT and so is the ALBUM with all the songs from the TV Special. The only drawback from it, IS that a person needs to be VERY WELL VERSED in BEATLE'S HISTORY, otherwise, they WON'T understand it and WON'T "GET" the parodies of the REAL events in Beatles' history. Therefore, they will NOT find it funny and will just be confused because it won't make ANY sense to them. It is TOTALLY AIMED at KNOWLEDGEABLE BEATLES' FANS.

No, not 1968. You really owe it to yourself to watch “The Rutles” a brilliantly clever mockumentary, and the music all sounds eerily reminiscent of the Beatles, because it was SUPPOSED TO. If you knew the Beatles catalog better you would absolutely love it. It’s as close to new Beatle music you’ll ever hear.

It was late 70's Harri and I believe it was '78. Neil Innes who was the writer of the songs and the creative genius behind The Rutles was actually in the Beatles' TV movie "Magical Mystery Tour". He was in the band The Bonzo Dog Dooda Band playing the song "Death Cab for Cutie". Beatle Paul insisted they wear the feather boas or whatever it was (can't remember exactly), they did not like the idea, but they went along with it. ha. The Rutles movie was produced in the USA called "All You Need is Cash" and starred Beatle George in a cameo and Eric Idle as Dirk McQuickly. Idle was not in the actual band, but played the band member Dirk in the movie. He also played the narrator.

Wonderful selection, Harri. Neil Innes was a genius and did emulate John. He wrote all of the songs too. Cheese and Onions is the worthy follow up. He passed a few years ago. George Harrison was involved and has a cameo in the movie All You Need Is Cash. Eric Idle is also featured as “Paul.” The Beatles loved it. John when asked about it started singing Cheese and Onions. If I haven’t made enough sense, let me spell it out! It’s all on KZbin, the movies there are 2, also. It was commissioned originally by US network NBC from the Saturday Night Live producer. It’s iconic stuff for any Beatles fan. As for singers who sound like iconic singers, Harri?? Sigh. Joe

in 1976 eric idle (monty python) and neil innes (bonzo dog doo dah band) did a song called "i must be in love" in the style of the beatles on their album "the rutland weekend songbook" by the fictitious band the rutles. then when eric hosted saturday night live in 1977 they did a short film about the rutles. the BBC in england wanted to do a full rutles tv special spoofing the beatles, but snl producer lorne michaels convinced idle to do it in america for NBC because they would have a bigger budget. the tv special "all you need is cash" was accompanied by an album of full length versions of the songs. the beatles, especially george harrison, were fans of both idle and innes,so they were flattered by the project. along with "piggie in the middle',the songs "cheese and onions" and "love life" really captured the beatles sound.

Beatles reaction to the Rutles? Well, all the Beatles were supplied with a film of the show before it was ever released. When it was time to return their copies, John Lennon refused to give his back, he had enjoyed it so much. Ringo and George have spoken about the Rutles at times, which can be heard in other videos here on youtube, and of course George actually appears in the show as an interviewer. Paul didn't like the show so much but wife Linda thought it was hysterical. After she died Paul sued Innes for plagiarism concerning the similarity between 'get Up And Go' and 'Get Back', with the judge ruling that the Rutles song must be given a 'Lennon-McCartney' song writing credit. I suspect this unhappy event might have put Innes off for a long time from making any new Rutles material.

It's like the Beatles from an alternative, and slightly weirder, universe. It's amazing how many decades they managed to keep up the joke while also producing songs that stand up on their own right, such as "Another Day," "Joe Public," Back in '64," and "Eine Kleine Middle Klasse Musik." And yet all of those songs are even more fun when you look for the Beatles 'Easter eggs' in them. One of their songs,"Get Up and Go" was too close to the Beatles song "Get Back" and they eventually had to give shared songwriting credit to McCartney/Lennon to resolve a lawsuit.
