I think that if you can, it's preferable to extend the bed to accommodate the vehicle of your choice and avoid having to flat tow behind the trailer.

The plan is to downsize my truck to a Jeep while the home base keeps the work vans. Greg it is nice to see you making a video again. I have had a VNL730 with a JKU bed since I bought the OTR truck had the bed built in 2019. I spent nearly two years prior to that watching your videos, researching HDTs, and finally searching for this truck. Thank you much for your videos. MY concern has always been this: I hated always moving the ramps. The best way, IMHO, is to have the ramps built right into the bed so they pull out but can never be removed from the truck. These things are heavy and cumbersome, and having to do extra work to pull the ramps out, bring them to the rear, then build the ramps and add supports along the middle all before you can take the Jeep down is just obnoxious. I’ve enjoyed your stuff right up until you stopped making videos around the time of the RVH fiasco. That was a real shame. Thank you for all you have done to teach me and many others.
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers Ай бұрын
I hear you regarding the ramp weight. I completely agree those ramps can be heavy. That is why I made them come apart (cutting down the weight). You will also see in some new videos coming shortly that WE NOW HAVE THE RAMPS stored in the rear and you pull them out already pointing in the right direction! Less handling! Thanks for the kind words, and I am glad you still find the videos of interest. Do you still have your 4 door yellow JKU? Kerry and I have been loving our 2 door JL Willys, but this year we decided to upgrade to a 4 door 392 Rubicon. I have some 37's installed, and just finished putting on the complete alum skid plates this past weekend. Stay safe and keep having fun!!! Gregg

@ yes, we have the JKU on 37’s as well. It has been very nice. We traveled full time for five years but we are now selling the truck to another jeeper. We don’t travel anymore and it seems ill advised to keep it when it won’t be used. We went with the discount ramps 5k per axle ramps. They have been great, I just wish I had built the bed tall enough to have them under the jeep at all times rather than locked on top of the bed.

Hi Gregg, long time watcher and maybe a future customer! Happy New Year! Love that composite bed (and your build videos), it looks great! Currently in a pusher motorhome and find myself doing most, if not all of the routine maintenance. With that in mind, I truly appreciate the room afforded when performing maintenance on these big trucks. Can this composite bed, specifically the deck panels, be removed for aspects of maintenance and repairs? For example, to gain access to the air bags, height control valves, etc? Granted it may be some work, but if it can gain that access, it could surely be worth it!

Hi Richard, This is GREAT QUESTION for all you folks out there with RVHaulers!!!! How are others doing with their lenghts? Please chime in and comment on this issue. Sadly, every Canadian province and US State has their own length restrictions - and they vary CONSIDERABLY! Some locations even have limitations on the 5th wheel itself (like California is 40 feet). Overall, we are often over those individual lengths even with a 38 foot 5th wheel. There are thousands of folks travelling every day with RVHaulers setups - and the large majority are all over-length - and have no issues. That is not to say that some sharp-eyed highway person might not have issue. Gregg

@rvhaulers Ай бұрын
Hello Javier, There are still some used smart cars in the market. I have three in stock now. I am always keeping my eye out for nice ones for my clients to consider as options. Regarding new vs used RVHaulers - it depends on your budget! You can stop in at your local HDT dealership, and see what a new one costs vs what a used one is priced at. If you like the idea of factory warranty, picking your options, features and even custom color, a NEW HDT is an attractive option. Thanks for watching! Gregg

Gregg, this might be a silly question, but I was surprised to see you say that the longer truck was only 30 feet. I was under the impression the shortest a truck could be while hauling a 2 door jeep was about 37 feet. Now that of course assumes a full condo truck (which you say would add about a foot), and probably includes a drom box as well. However, I also noticed that when you mention 30 feet, your drawing has a line from the from bumper to somewhere not to the furthest rear portion of the entire vehicle. So my question is, was that line just a quick reference drawing and not meant to be the literal points of measurement, or are you measuring the "truck" as not meaning the entire unit, but just the actual truck, and not the overhanging bed on top? I'm just surprised at the 30 foot length, even minus a foot of condo and however deep the drom would be.
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers Ай бұрын
Thanks for the great question - I'm measuring the overall length of the truck chassis to the end of the bed. The smartie bed you saw was just under 30 feet long. The jeep ready RVhauler you see in this video is roughly 38 feet long (and 4 door Jeep ready).

Do you have to chop one axle off or can you leave both axles on?
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers Ай бұрын
Thanks for that great question. No, we do NOT have to remove an axle. Should you wish, you can certainly keep both axles out back. I hope you don't mind, but I'd to share and few positives and NEGATIVES to the one-axle solution: In other words - Why do we “single” an RVHauler? Some Advantage and Disadvantages. 1. Every individual state/province has their own rules, however one rear axle can often be classified as a motorhome. Titling as a motorhome results in far cheaper insurance, and registration costs. If it has two rear axles, it is sometimes considered a commercial vehicle, and the insurance is about $6000+ per year. One rear axle, the insurance is about $900-$1300 per year. This is dependent on where you live. Sometimes you can have it titled as a “personal truck” when it still has two rear axles. 2. Perhaps an even stronger reason for singling the rear is the impact it has on the required operator’s license. A single rear axle can be driven with a standard driver’s license in most locations. A three axle truck requires a commercial driver’s license in a good number of cases. Sometimes we have to take a one-day air-brake course. 3. Make it a motorhome, and you don’t have to maintain a driver’s log, annual commercial safety inspections, or stop at weigh scales ever. 4. Traction. I have proven in side by side tests that a single rear axle has superior traction in pavement, grassy and gravel conditions. I have had people with their dual axle RVHaulers here in my campground in various wet, nnowy, or icy scenarios. My yard has some very gentle undulations, lumps and bumps. They have tried to backup their trailers, and gotten horribly stuck, chewed up grass, and spun tires on ice. I have had to unhook them from their trailers in-place, and I winch them out. Then, I backup unaided to their trailer with my single rear axle RVHauler, connect, and back them up into the site, or drive out. I have done this probably 12 times in the past few years just in my yard. I have always won. In every case, the tandem axle RVHaulers had full lockers. Every tire (all 8) spinning back there. WHY? We have extremely little pin weight pushing down on the drive tires (perhaps 3000 - 5000 lbs). The coefficient of friction requires downward force. I have many more small details that I can share with you should you wish to explore this further, and I would suggest you call me to learn more if interested. 5. Limited axle articulation when we have two rear axles. The rear axles are attached with extremely stiff springs onto an extremely stiff frame. There is only 3 inches of tipping or articulation from side to side available to an individual axle. When driving over the slightest uneven bumps (or a gravel divot in a campground), the axle will tend to stay level. If you lift the one set of wheels, the opposite wheels tend to lift as well because the second unaffected axle is still on the flat. The lifting wheels that have lost much of their ground contact will spin. Again, I have proven this in side by side testing on my own driveway that leads into my shop. 6. Better fuel mileage. There is less weight, road friction, and steel rotating. 7. Singling results in a far better turning radius than your pickup. Two rear axles tend to “scrub” or grab the road surface, and it makes campground maneuverability a bit more challenging. 8. Superior trailing backing. As an aside, when we combine singling with the location of our 5th wheel hitch placed rear of the axle (not directly above it as we do with pickups), we gain amazing trailer backing characteristics. When we are backing up a trailer with the hitch placed approximately 3 feet rear of the axle we essentially have the backing characteristics of a bumper pull trailer. We start trailer "turning" sooner. 9. Singling results in less downward force carrying capacity over the rear axle. Most rear axles are engineered for 20,000 lbs of "sprung" weight. They can support 20,000 lbs of downward force. When we add to the bare frame (A) a fully outfitted bed (deck), (B) a drom box, (C) smart car, (D) and we fill all the storage with our super-heavy contents that full-timers take --- END MATH RESULT --- My "heaviest contents" customers have had 7,500 lbs left over capacity for their 5th wheel pin weight. If you plan to tow a very heavy pin weight trailer that is approaching 7500 lbs two axles might be warranted. 10. Take a Jeep or something heavier than a Smart Car? If you plan on carrying something other than a smart car on the bed, they need to be loaded length-wise. We have to be aware of weight capacity. Most small cars or Jeeps will weigh around 4700 lbs and up. This will take away from our 5th wheel pin weight allowance. On average, a 4700 lb Jeep will allow us a maximum 5th wheel pin weight of around 4,800 lbs. 11. Nicer (smoother) ride. I have enjoyed many hours and days of towing our 5th wheels with single, and dual rear axle RVHaulers. We have consistently remarked that the single rear axle is much much smoother. The dual rear axles tend to "chatter" when hitting road imperfections and cracks in the pavement. 12. Singling results in a shorter rig overall. If you leave the tandem axles, we often have an RVHauler that is 3 feet longer overall. 13. Lower maintenance and repair costs (fewer tires, brakes, etc) 14. Increases your resale value - when you are ready to sell, it REALLY increases the value when there is a single rear axle. There are many many commercial trucks available for sale. There are far fewer RVHaulers! 15. Allows for more storage boxes under the bed/deck. Those tires are almost 4 feet across! Leaving the two rear axles reduces our storage opportunities by 4 feet of width X 2 feet deep X 2 feet high X two boxes = 32 cubic feet of storage. 16. Some folks like the looks of a single rear axle. Visually it becomes more of an RV rather than a commercial truck. Some like the traditional looks of a commercial truck with two axles. We can dig into any of these points in more detail should you be interested. Call me or email me! Thanks for watching my videos, Gregg

Going with the 670-size is a great idea. I currently have a Gen-Y Gooseneck Pin box on my short 33' 5er with a 5" offset ball in my 3/4-to truck, we get almost no chucking feel with that torsion rubber in the pin box (Just lots of brake issues!). I was told years ago that if you have a 5W hitch with 3-4 airbags that you cannot have a pin box with an airbag as they would conflict. How then does the truck's airbags also not influence the 5W hitch? Our next 5W upgrade will take us from 14.5K# to 17.5K# GVWR so I will take that into consideration as we really like the simplicity of the Gooseneck setup and Gen-Y has been a great company to work with. (Not to steal any thunder from Henry as his 5W hitch is great). I think I'd still prefer a 2-wheel jeep as we like to take the rear seat out anyway. But lots of decisions to make for sure. Thanks for the eye candy and the composite beds sure look like a good solution. What is the modern-day version of the 670? It appears there is a lot of them out there although you would probably tell me they are usually a Fleet ordered model that has fewer creampuffs, LOL. -David & Sheila
@rvhaulers
@rvhaulers Ай бұрын
Hello Sheila and David. Oh, - I love this question thanks! The air bags on the rear axle provide absolutely NO cushioning. The air bags set the ride height, and are like a rock. There is ZERO bounce or give in them even with a 2 door Jeep and even heavy trailer pin weights. You are correct though that if we have air bags on the hitch (like Henry's ET SR), and also have air bags on your pin box - that combination will definitely compete, and get bouncy. The closest replacement to the Volvo 670 is now the 760. Watch for some videos coming with one of those and a 2 door Jeep bed really soon. That model is still really well outfitted, but it tends to not come with the table and benches. HOWEVER, we have designed a drop-in retrofit to remove the lower fixed bed, and install a table and bench system that converts to a bed (just like the 780s and the 860s). Re a 2 door - Kerry and I have been using our 2 door Jeep Wrangler Willys a huge amount, and have been taking the back seat out. It has done a fantastic job on some really technical off-roading, and we have really liked it for the remote weekend camping capabilities. However, just recently we also picked up a 4 door 392 Rubicon with the 470 HP hemi. You will soon see that one in some videos as well. It is easier for getting the grand-baby in and out of the car seat (at least that was the justification and reasoning I used to go test drive one). Kerry completely saw through my lame justification, as soon as we took one on the highway and I stepped on it. Oh, boy, do those 8 cylinders ever rocket that Wrangler. I noticed that I looked way younger behind the wheel of the 392 470 HP Rubicon, and a whole bunch of my wrinkles immediately dissapeared! Enough typing, I have to get back to building an RVHauler here in the shop. Gregg
