Sounds somewhat like a crazy loud rotary engine in my opinion but like with a two-stroke twist. Enjoy!

When I was a kid, there was a neighbor across and down the street from my house in the late 60's early 70's that had one of these with a spotlight in the middle of the roof above the windshield. I could always hear it start up and would run to the window to see. He would wind it up and back it out of the driveway quickly, , then put it in forward and wail it down the street. I like two stroke everything, and rode exclusively two stroke motorcycles for a time, both street bikes and trail bikes from about 1974 to 1983. If I came across one of these cheap enough and in good enough condition, I would love to have one for a toy today. There's nothing like the aroma of an over rich two stroke starting up in the morning.

Had a neighbor with one of these growing up in Ohio. People made fun of him cuz he had to mix the gas with the oil. But most snowy morning she was the first one out and he would clear the street

Sounds like that old snowmobile that I used to own lol! Do you have to pre-mix the fuel and oil? Do you have to carry spare spark plugs, spark plug wrenches, belts, and extra quarts of oil when you drive? How long do the crankshaft seals last? How about when you de-accelerate, do you have to push in the clutch to allow the RPM's to come down so you don't starve the engine of oil? Maybe not belts I suppose... Are they built any better than the 2-stroke Trabant?

Don't have all the answers but i do know that they had freewheel hubs, so no engine brake.

Some Saabs came with an oil metering system that would dispense the appropriate amount. In my '67 Monte Carlo 850 rebuild we left it off and premixed when fueling. Great car, lousy mileage.. 3carbs/2stroke/15mpg.. My Saab had a freewheel mode activated by a cable pulling out gear connecting forks in the tranny. The difference in quality of build between Trabant and Saab is vast.

I carry extra plugs, and two 5 quart containers of oil in the trunk. Freewheeling works great and I'll definitely miss it in a normal car

There's just one single belt on the car. Does the trabi have a second one powering the fan?

Had a 63 and a 64 . And noisy they were. BUT ... When I installed a more expensive ORIGINAL O.E.M. FRONT MUFFLER that 1 st ( 63 ) Saab WAS SO QUIET!!!! AND HAD A PLEASENT RING GA DING SOUND. The 2 nd one a 62 Had a COW HORN !!!! HALARIOUS !!! BUT neither one had any good heat come cold weather. And the original tires width were TOO NARROW AND IT'S WHEEL TRACK SIDE TO SIDE WAS WAY TOO NARROW TO BE CORRECTLY ALIGN ED ON THE TYPICAL AMERICAN CAR WIDTH ALINGEMENT APPARATUS ( BEAR ) DURING THE 60S. LOVED THE ENGINEERING BUT TOO MANY REPAIRS I.E. ONE SAAB STORY AFTER ANOTHER. FINALLY BOUGHT A 69 TOYOTA CORONA HAD IT FOR 16 YRS AND NO MAJOR PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER .

These two stroke Saabs were however not slow for the time. They successfully competed in European rallies in the 50’s.

My 1961 SAAB 96 sounded just like that. Mistaken for a 6 cylinder unit. It would get to 80 mph and hold that speed but never 90 mph. It would also do about 24 mpg. I used engine oil instead of 2 stroke oil and it ran very well but smokey. I killed it when on a motorway and the radiator lost water seizing a piston which also cracked when i was 170 mile from home. I left it at the roadside for scrap. It was very rusty in 1971 when i paid £50 for it. My replacement for that car was a 1960 Sunbeam Rapier convertible which cost £75. Now that 1600 would do 100 mph but still just 24 mpg or less.
