@@Pwnicus187 Yeah… it’s a good book, but it made me so angry. In a good way. I was so sure at the end that Muril had gotten that grox-fondler and avenged Bragg… until that final scene where the bastard licks the blood off his knife and saunters on his way. Plus, that worthless drunk whose life Dorden saves… who ends up being caught using Dorden’s dead wife for their little insurance scam.

@@Pwnicus187YT deleted my first reply to you. BLEGH. Anyway, yeah I like that one too, but it’s also a very emotional book. Dan Abnett has got me with visceral reactions to his 40k books several times. There’s a particular antagonist in the first Bequin book who had a flower motif, and whose arrival was heralded by rose petals floating around… the dude unnerved me so much-and I was so emotionally invested in that book-I was genuinely startled for a moment when a couple days later I happened to see a lone rose petal on a table at work.

Worth noting that the “Heritor” title was originally just related to his “inheriting” of worlds, with no implication otherwise. He was basically a German Watercolourist pastiche with a fairly standard chaos champion description and the ability to control people via hypnotic signals IN SPAAAAAAACE (he’s Komplex from Bucky o’Hare grafted onto an Archeon mini is what I’m saying). In many ways, the most interesting thing about the confrontation with him was the existence of Darkwalkers and the fact he was clearly built using the recent Codex: Chaos Space Marines II army list. Not long after this book came out, however, Sandy Mitchell released a Ciapjas Cain novel with a literal Space German Watercolourist antagonist, right down to being short and shouty, so Asphodel needed a retcon. Initially it went find, but the crippling lack of subtlety Abnett developed during the Horus Heresy novels finally kicked in, in full force, in Anarch. Of the Heritor College themselves, besides a brief encounter with a research crew, we know relatively little, but a much more fleshy take on the Dark Mechanicum would be welcome if we ever get another novel…

I find this great. Mostly because it is thematic and it allows for easy re-lisening or can be as well taken as a "one off". I think you could happily mesh some other vids together, like for example a full "Operation redwake" video.

I find myself frustrated with Gaunt. Now of course the omnibus I own is comprised of some of THE single worst Gaunts Ghosts stories in existence. But the fandom's obsession with recreating him without understanding what even allows one to be both a commissar and a Colonel simultaneously is what really makes me dislike encountering the character. It's refreshing to see an account of his time in stories where he's both flawed and not 1v1 with Chaos Marine lords while his guardsmen are wearing standard issue at birth flesh tone power armor.
