The Saracen raid against Rome in 846 AD was a violent attack by Muslim pirates from North Africa and Sardinia.
They landed in Ostia and traveled up the Tiber River to reach the basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul, which they looted and desecrated.
Unable to enter the city, protected by the Aurelian walls, they headed south, devastating the Roman countryside and besieging Gaeta. They were repelled by a coalition of Christian forces, led by Consul Cesario of Naples, and by a storm that damaged their ships.
This episode shook Christianity and prompted Pope Leo IV to build the Leonine Walls to defend St. Peter's Basilica.
