It's good to remember that they defeated the Spartans twice - not just at the battle of Leuctra, but also earlier, at the battle of Tegyra. At Tegyra the Spartan force outnumbered them over 2:1 and they still managed to win!

First it was professional cavalry that won the battle not Sacred Band. Once Theban cavalry routed Spartan cavalry which was in serious dissadvantage in numbers and training, the Spartan cavalry run over it's own lines they lost cohesion and that is when Sacred Band charged. Second, it's said that Epaminondas developed proto Phalangites because slingers were placed inside the Sacred Band forces and of course Phalangites had the longer spears. That also explains unusually deeper line. And we also know that Philip of Macedon was pupil of Epaminondas so all hints toward new military inovation Sacred Band had but we can’t know for sure. Thirdly, after earthquake in Laconia, the Spartan numbers were devastated. They lost over 3000 fighting men, that is serious blow from which they never recovered and it was their decline.

I don't know what you're talking about, but in one battle they kicked off the Spartan King Agesilaus II, and in another battle (Leuctra, if I'm not mistaken) they killed the Spartan King Cleombrotus.

@@wingedhussar4219 the words used for the members of the Sacred Band were "eromenos" and "erastes", both derivated from "eros" which in ancient Greek was a word for lust and erotic, sensual love. The word used to describe deep friendship, but without any erotic context, was philia and such people would have been described as philoi (friends) or hetairoi (companions). They were gay as heck and there is nothing wrong about it.

Well, gay in a way far different than what one may think. Homosexuality was well spread in the ancient greek world but with extreme differences with today's standards. Yes many men had male lovers with which they had usually a strong bond either of friendship or an experienced older warrior/young apprentice warrior bond. The thing is that they also had families with a wife and children. So far away by today's "gay" standards. Penetration was viewed as something bad and wrong except for young slaves and young boys. So yes, homosexual in a way but nothing to do with today's way of thought about it. One could maybe call them bisexual in a way but still not exactly with today's connotations.

@anhduc hoang King Philip commanded the Macedonian army, while Prince Alexander is said to have been the first of the Macedonian leaders to face the 300 of Thebes (although Alexander is not credited as the one who defeated them, but Philip).

Hi , Thebans fought with the rest hoplites spartans only 700 ....row 50 against 8 its obvios lost.....others hoplites won too....the allies splits the batlle whole hoplites sorruenders to the spartan position ...imposible stand a battle Mora Spartan minimun was 1.180 .....the mistake was send only 700....Please read History,,,,,,the video show rows 50 against 8 ?...not individual combats....fake total ...
