Nightlife has been dead for about a decade. Posh kids moving into London complain about noise (you moved next to a pub or club). Local councils are changing licensing laws. Pints are too expensive, and people are skint. I'm so glad I grew up when work was available, clubs and pubs were packed, and people were allowed to do as they liked.

100%. In my part of Nth London 10 pubs within a 20 minute walk, all packed to the rafters 4/5 nights of the week. Weekends were awesome barely get through the door. No aggro, great music, tons of mates and weekend lock in's. Pubs near me now are dead, always the same handful of older people/builders drinking what ever is on offer and making it last.

Its the same in Ireland. I swear in about 40 years the government will be happy because no one will drive, no cash will exist, and no one will be out enjoying themselves. The entire cost of living crisis is complete nonsense. Wealth is there more than ever, profits are up across the board. Its only now its being hoarded by fewer people. When people tell you its rich people causing this crap, don't scoff at them. When your kids won't ever own a home you know who to blame.

Not sure where the "no-one will drive" comes from. The government have spent my entire life trying to force me to drive. I can't get to work without my car and would struggle to go shopping. The public transport has been almost totally destroyed. Far from not wanting you to drive, they want you to be forced to drive to keep up the oil company profits and paying fuel duty and VED.

I can't imagine Britain without a wooden decorated pub with pint taps, carpet, a target for darts, some couched seats, tv turned on to either bbc news/sky news or sky sports, another tv showing horse derbies and pubgoers talking about how politicians suck, royal family gossips, the premier league/FA cup/UCL results, home related issues, trivias, etc. while another quiet pubgoer is sat on the benches outside to have a smoke while seeing its cellphone/reading the newspaper...man, this is literally part of the British social fabric!

@@davewordsworth1251 it's one of them, took the kids there for one night so we knew we weren't going to have more than 2-3 anyway so didn't even think about checking the prices. They charged £1.25 for kids cordial too so the round was actually £17.50. Our local brews it's own lager, it's £4 a pint and a medium wine is £5.80 so our round is £9.80 in a lovely place in one of the nicest suburbs in the UK (voted on guardian) and they do the kids cordial for free. I get Alton Towers is further south with bigger overheads + it's a hotel, but the difference is staggering, and the pint and wine weren't anywhere near on par with our local.
@SmithyD86
@SmithyD86 Ай бұрын
Sorry meant to add... It's making me and the wife not want to travel and become very insular which is such a shame. Loads of great places to visit in the UK but when the prices are like this I don't even end up enjoying a 2-3 night stay anywhere because it costs a fortune for not that great service / products. All these UK got spots will die out soon I think when our wages don't keep up. The buffet was the only place you could eat in the hotel and it was £27.50 per adult and £12.50 per child. I almost cried paying £80 for the four of us to have a bog standard OK buffet 😭

I still get piffed most weekends. I've switched to drinking cheap wine when I go out. I can usually get a small glass for around £3.50 where I live. It's cheaper than spirits because, obviously you're not also paying for a mixer. I take a bottle of water with me and bar staff are happy to fill it up. I tend to drink the equivalent amount of water after each glass of wine, due to the fact that wine is around 12% and I only want to fall over, not fall over and roll under a bus.

It's tempting to think this was all planned. But the real truth is, they just don't care enough to protect something the (largely) working class enjoy, and - at times - draw social strength and bonding from. The economy, covid, smartphones, gentrification, and immigration all have a part to play in this. I came of age going out in the late-90's, so it's a massive kick in the nuts to see where British pub culture has gone. It's also worth noting how revered our pubs are by the tourists that come over here. From the US, to European countries, they all remark on how great the British pub is, because there's nothing quite like it anywhere else in the world.

I just turned 25. I went to Southampton for uni when I was 18, did the usual freshers thing, but was in a long-distance relationship so never really made the most of it. Even then, by second year Wetherspoons was the only affordable place to go out. By the time that relationship ended we were 4 months away from Covid hitting, so I never got to graduate, see off my uni friends, and the only night out I didn’t have a single night out when I was 21. In July 2021, in an effort to escape my parents’ house that I’d been forced to move back into, I moved to Bristol with a group of friends. We did some fairly successful band stuff and worked everyday for two years, but could barely ever afford to go out as well - and if we could then it was almost impossible to find somewhere where you could sit down and have a civilised drink, outside of Spoons. I’m now 25 and realising that I’ll never actually get the experience of drinking down the social club or having a wild night out on the town that my parents had throughout their entire 20s. Britain = a pile of decayed shit, “led” by cunts who wouldn’t piss on us if we were on fire.

In the nineties I was pi33ing it up every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in pubs before raving. We used to have amazing club nights and raves in the local leisure center every weekend. The music was astounding, totally sublime. My mates were brilliant. My girlfriends were beautiful and they were drinking and raving too. We used to buy a wrap of whi33 for £10 and shuffle-dance til the early hours - every weekend, summer or winter. And I was there. Feel so sad for the young folks in this puritan no-fun £10-a-pint leftist dystopian sh1t state, with nothing to look forwards to including housing, and draconian law waiting in the wings which will ban anything that is leisure or pleasurable, including music itself.

Nightclubs have failed to save reputations, they used to be massively profitable but the nightclubs kept letting in riffraffs who bring trouble such as bringing in drugs and weapons, when a major fight or stabbing happens it tanks a nightclubs reputation and nightclubs didnt want to pay for the extra security so they just take the risk instead. Pubs are a strange one, i remember they were declining 10 years ago when nightclubs were thriving, but it looks like they are going down again, pubs dont really accomodate non drinkers or drink driving, they have one non alcoholic beer which always seems to be becks blue or heineken (the worst) and heavy food which make you want to sleep rather than stay out for another drink, spanish tavernas and bars have finger food along with coffee/hot drinks with some desserts with the odd one selling substantial meals Maybe the pub/nightclub industry needs a complete revamp?

The authorities would much rather we were at home spending our money. Once they have all the pubs and clubs closed ... double the price of alcohol and ban all drinking outside the home. There will be a total smoking ban, both tobacco and vape. Next stage is to restrict how far from work we can stay (ban all combustion engine transport) and set a range limit on electric vehicles (to reduce carbon emmisions they limit battery size = reduced electricity use). People don’t often mention this as a reason, but could the ageing population also be a factor? A good night out isn’t necessarily cheap, so you’d probably need to be in full time employment to afford it. But just consider the fact that a pretty hefty chunk of Britain’s workforce now consists of people in their mid 40s to mid 60s. (I fall into that bracket myself) Many people in that age group, especially those in tiring, stressful jobs, don’t particularly feel like “painting the town red” when the weekend rolls around. They’d sooner put their feet up at home. Yes this IS a generalisation of course. But I think it has some validity.

I'm a vegan, but besides that agree with all the reasons you gave for the demise of the great British night out. I think the first nail was the indoor smoking ban in 2007. It forced pubs to diversify towards food which changed what pubs were about in the first place. Social media and the smartphone took off at exactly the same time and only now are we seeing these things as essentially antisocial. I'm glad I got to live a party life for thirty years before it all went south. I think every point you made was fair. One other thing - I think our ability to be offended and pissed off with everything has risen with the demise of our heavy nights out, where we seemed to see the funny side more often than not.

No one seemed to be asking the question though...Is 3 pubs in such a small village 1 or 2 pubs too many? When I think of all of the quaint villages near me (I'm in East Sussex currently, but grew up in Kent) it seems this is a common problem. I moved to England from Sarf Efrica back in 2005 and had a grand old time after having spent my teens and early 20s reading about UK nightlife in 3 month old copies of DJ and Mixmag. Got to work at The End in central Laandan and it was fu%$in' wicked. Sad to see how things have gone/ are going.

Its fine here in Notts, I catch the tram into town most weekends and go listen to bands from varying levels of popularity/quality, and then when I want to drink I just pop into the sainsburys and get 2-3 quid ciders/ales. And then after watching a band I go clubing, and it normally costs around 30-70 quid.

The breweries often charge the pubs for stock not sold that has to be returned. They charge the pubs at the sale price instead of cost, another way pubs are being boned

I was born in 1982, my group of about 5 friends have never frequented a pub. However we've always hit the bars in Manchester city centre and nightclubs. Then I fucked off to Madrid before it was too late.

I really miss the Big Night out, it was brillant getting ready with your mates, having a laugh, dancing. I'm 31 so a millenial, the Gen Z's don't drink, smoke don't do much at all, but they can't afford to.

That’s true in part. The other aspect is now a lot of gen z are 2nd generation of parents who have a different value system. So simple things like drinking or going out is seen as haram. So they simply won’t do it.

Pubs started shutting down years ago, and the ones that were still open turned into trendy bars. Like you said, the old pub goers are dying off, cost and the new generation aint like the raving generation of gen x, so its curtains.

In birmingham, digbeth is basically dead and ill tell you why. £11 for a double vodka, yet i go to a bar right next to digbeth that does £4 double vodka and its absolutely packed every weekend. These bars are destroying themselves by overcharging.
