Interesting to learn about these films. I only watched a handful of Nostalgia Critic episodes years ago (even back then I thought they were hit or miss) and didn't know anything about the movies them being bloated and bad. Wasn't expecting the final moments to be about Doug Walker. Good job. I'm a big Scott the Woz fan and was surprised when you brought him up. You hit the nail on the head with joke pacing. Even when one of Scott's jokes don't land, it never feels like he's wasting my time.

36:00 To add to this sentiment, I remember in one of the numerous video essays about Doug, there was a quote that has truly stuck with me. "Doug Walker seems to understand comedy; he can grasp what a joke is, but he can't seem to make them work himself" Or something to that effect

If that's from Dan Olson's video, I'd take anything he says in it about Doug Walker with All Of The pinches of salt. It does not take long to realize that he's using the pretense of reviewing the disastrous Wall review to vent his spleen. He goes into some extremely personal territory there, it's almost uncomfortable to listen to.

I mean, this is true for many people. That's why most video essayists can tell you why Marvel sucks and yet they wouldn't be able to write something better than Thor 4 themselves. As for Doug, I feel like he never really matured his sense of humour. All he can write is the Nostalgia Critic on the same way JK Rowling can only write Harry Potter, the thing is that internet humour ages much faster, and when you want to move on from that but also don't learn to do it, you get modern NC. Much of old internet humour was based on shouting, swearing and being explosive and erratic, and on Doug's case, making pop culture references. For a simple movie review, that's fine although formulaic, but people have moved past that and demand more. I think that along the way, Doug became both self-aware but also defensive. Actually, a lot of writers have recently and I think it's because of social media. Since you can get feedback pretty much on real time, you can see what people think of what you do right as you say it, it's not just people sending their personal thoughts on letters, it's a collective brain picking on you and often it's to tear you down. Again, this has caused writers to be constantly self-aware and that's why we have this new wave of cynical, 4th wall breaking, sarcastic, self-deprecating writing that has like 10 layers of irony. It's basically shielding itself from criticism and addressing it since its conception. Now no one dares to be vulnerable in their writing, and that translates to people not being honest. I say that because (back to Doug) you have a humour that hasn't evolved and is constantly protecting itself, just being mean-spirited and relying on references because God forbids you actually try to do something honest and just embrace it for what it is without making excuses.

@@vinnysuperg123 13:33: I don't know why, but I thought Phelous is funnier in the cynical department. Although, there are some stuff involving Ninja Turtles that I do not agree with, mostly his reviews on Turtles Forever and the 2012Nick Crossovers; it felt to me he had his mindset mixed up. And it even made him more of a hypocrite, when he thinks the Fred Wolf series wasn't outlandish while reviewing Turtles Forever, yet made a Bottom 40 Dumbest Moments list on Fred Wolf TMNT that talks about how outlandish it is, which made his reviews on the crossovers very moot... so yeah, I don't blame you for hating him.

But GET THIS each review has lore to their characters thats NEVER brought up in the movies doug makes. Like Angry joe has a thing where he can command lightning right? Never once does he use that to fight in any of dougs movies or is acknowledged. But in Linkara's movie Joe uses his power to fight all the time and powers a generator static shock style.

I always knew you were a man of culture Vinny. I LIVE for ironic memeing and jokes about Nostalgia Critic. EDIT: Alright now with the video finisehd I can comment more on it haha Awesome video dude, I really enjoyed that it wasnt just a solid 40 minutes of larping on the movies, even though its very much warranted and fun to do. It was really interesting to see your take on some of the background of these movies and I think you hit the nail right in the head with it, its really sad (especially as someone who grew up watching NC too) and a cautionary tale for all aspiring content creators. Its extra sad because from what I remember reading back when the whole Channel Awesome shitshow came to light, while Doug's not free of guilt in terms of mismanagement, he was barely mentioned in the whole exposé aside from being a time or two where he acted like a dick, so it really tells about a guy here who, yes definitely has big ego problem (hell even he mocked himself on how masturbatory TBF was) and has his head way too far up his ass, but also really seems passionate and wanted with his heart and soul to dedicate to this, but ended up getting stuck doing something that he made clear he no longer wanted to do and that he wanted to evolve, but in the end it did not happen, maybe it wasnt in the cards for him and thats depressing, but on the other hand we could just take it as Karma for all the shit and issues he let slide, even if it was out of just because all he wanted was to do goofy videos and movies and did not want much to do with the management/busniness side of all this, cause one thing is clear, of all his shortcomings, poor business is also one of them.

Doug is in his 40s now. I really can't see him still playing the NC character in his 50s. I hope Doug has been investing his money and has planned for retirement, because it is going to be sad seing Doug making the same lame videos in his 50s or older. And IMO Doug's problem is he is not that talented but thinks he is talented due to his ego. When I went to film school my producing teacher taught us to surround ourselves with more creative and talented people than ourselves and to try to produce content with very creative and talented people behind them. The problem with Channel Awesome is that it is run by untalented people with big egos who did not create an environment for more talented people to prosper. I stopped watching the NC years ago because Doug is just making the same videos over and over again without growing as a content creator. And no, Doug's videos really do not get that many views. For how old Doug's channel is he really should have more views on his videos.

i was never really a fan of channel awesome. i was (and will always be) a fan of avgn and i watched alot of noah antwiler's videos as well so im loosely aware of what they did and it's odd to see that there are SO MANY videos hating on kinda the whole purpose of what he has done with his life by people that enjoyed his content im guessing for many years. im not against criticism ofc, but going down this rabbit hole it all seems so vitriolic and personal. ultimately people don't like his content anymore (which is basically unchanged) and they did when they were younger in a different era of YT. this is hardly a sin or unique to channel awesome. guess im just curious why it's so personal feeling for the disdain people have for him (them?) when there are many channels that had lighting in a bottle and then lost it. epicmealtime a channel i never watched has nearly 7M subs and still creates regular content yet gets less than 10k views a video now and their (his?) channel doesn't get this kind of response. i mean he uploaded a shitty movie and couldn't adapt his content? a 10 year delayed reaction is an odd response

Another big difference between Doug and Scott is that most of the inside jokes in Borderline Forever were RUNNING gags in the other Scott the Woz videos-meaning that, even if you haven't seen a lot of his videos, you've probably come across an instance of the joke at some point! Meanwhile, a lot of Doug's inside jokes in his movies were things that might have come up in only ONE review, so it's quite likely you missed it, thus ruining the quality of the inside joke!

Watching the video, I realise that most of the humor in these movies were TGWTG/Channel Awesome in-jokes that are now lost to time due to their origin videos being wiped from the web. I get the impression that these movies were supposed to be pandering love letters to their fans. I wish there was an archive of every Channel Awesome video that was made so that we can analyze this unique corner of the web. Also, every time I see Spoony, I cry, because unlike all the other narcissists his content was good, even great at times.

Because that's when you'd get crossovers, glorious, filmed-during-their-time-off crossovers. If you only followed one of the reviewers in one of those vids, you could be exposed to a new fave. _To Boldly Flee_ being filmed at a breakneck pace meant there was no more time for any of that, which is yet another reason that movie sucks.

"And then violence happened" being the entire punchline is such a Crtl+Alt+Del zero effort, zero talent sense of humor. That was the final panel of every internet 1.0 gaming webcomic going back to the late 90s, to the point that Pokey the Penguin was parodying it by 1998 . The fact that Doug was still dipping into that dry well past 2010 is just embarrassing.

Not defending Doug, but I really don't understand why people think that making critiques automatically translates into ability of creating the kind of medium you're critiquing. Ask a game reviewer to develop a game and he'll fail.

@@vinnysuperg123 It's always the same talking points: 1 Women were attacked by Mike Michade witch after the cinematic venom documentary we found out was because those women in general were shit stirrers 2 Women were poorly written-No every one was poorly written, it's how Doug writes 3 Lindsy, Liz, Lupa ware poorly treated on set-no every one was poorly treated on set Sponey was not allowed to take his meds in one of the shoots and Sad Panda had to lie on set fully dressed for 22 hours because it was no budget film making ; look at some trauma productions documentaries they had their actors sleep on mattress filled with bed bugs and they ware constantly getting bitten by spiders or read rebel without a crew it is verry eye opening 4 Doug made grape and gay jokes and that is not ok-yup they are jokes, if you get offended get over your self 5 Spooney made an AWFULL joke to JO- aha look at the thing I said above, a joke in poor taste but still a joke No one gets in to the fact that Doug fundamentally doesnt understand film *making * He talks about plot and story synopses but never goes in how shot composition, lighting, sfx etc impact how you consume the story being told Way back when I watched NC or AVGN my least favorite things were their skits and they seem to be their favorite and as the run times of the "reviews" grew bigger their own failed attempts at film making and acting grew to infect more and more of the run time untill I gradually lost interest

@@Dudebrotheguy Ok straight up, you probably did not finish the video. Judging from the soyboy comment, its either that or you just completely forgot the 2nd half of the video. I very rarely talked about the Change the Channel stuff since that was not the focus or purpose of the video. I literally do exactly what you wanted me to do, and I go into how Doug misunderstands what it is like to create a joke. The skits that you did not like were because Doug fundamentally misunderstands how to create a joke. I do not talk about the composition or lighting because I like to believe that my viewers have eyeballs and can see it for themselves. Also, saying that everyone was poorly written is factually incorrect because that implies that Angry Joe was poorly written. And that's the fattest L of this entire comment. This video really was not meant to be a deconstruction of why these movies don't work. This video was not even really meant to be about Doug. This video was me sleep deprived at 5am ranting into my microphone for an hour and a half and me thinking it would be funny to turn that into a video. Also, politics in video games are based, my girlfriend is trans, I'm pansexual, the Last Jedi is a good film, diversity in media is good, the Last of Us 2 is a great game, and I'm currently having sex with your mother.

@@vinnysuperg123 -Angry Joe is only good in the "films" because of what Joe himself brings to the table Plus he mashes well with Dougs overly animated "writing"/ "directing" So no not a L, AJ just has better camera presence -Shot composition can fly well over of what you consciously perceive but subconsciously gives you context( intentionally or un intentionally)I can go in to this but I am lazy tho if you want I'll do it - You are damn right I was just 13 minutes in the video when I wrote the comment and I was expecting a pity party for the change the channel people, thankfully there was none -Dougs joke composition isn't his problem it's his assumption that you have seen all of his reviews and you know all the references AND you aren't sick of them yet Scots quick fire jokes are what NC used to do(way back) and it works on sheer quantity but it has no longevity look at shows like family guy where they attempted to do the same, quick fire random jokes get tiresome especial in a bad bach But Scot keeps to a very efferent formula: if your jokes have no whit keep em short something that NC, AVGN and most of the reviewers forget as time goes on -You defend the shortcomings of you video by saying it was something you did while sleep deprived(presumably unless that is your normal sleep schedule), well how abut this: it is 5 am where I am right now and I cant sleep because tomorrow I finaly get my homologation papers for my gt500 so because i cant sleep I am looking up random people on the internet from my teens -Also it is good to spread *THE MESSAGE*, youre not fucking anyone because you are a bottom, you're girlfriend and his boyfriend cheat on you with your father

found your channel because of the mind retrospective, glad to know we infact share interests in multiple niche internet corners. like many ironic channel awesome movie enjoyers (though i dont REALLY know how ironic it is anymore, the lines have indeed been blurred for me) i love the first two and have watched them dozens of time, but holy shit it is IMPOSSIBLE to sit through to boldy flee, ive watched it once and it was torturous. none of the charm of kickassia and double the length, amazing. also it is so funny to watch the difference between angry joe and lindsay ellis in any of the three, joe is having so much fucking fun and lindsay is literally checking her phone in some shots its so great. out of curiosity have you watched the atop the fourth wall movie? AT4W movie is a continuation of the TBF story and is shockingly boring, the first 10 minutes are very unintentionally funny and the rest is literally nothing. one thing, super small bit but i dont think its fair to put spoony on the same level as jewwario. spoonys an asshole but jewwario is like the literal scum of the earth lmao one other little tidbit is that in the blooper reel for suburban knights when malachite does the backflip he fucks it up the first time and lands on his neck and its absolutely fucked lmao also hot take suburban knights is far funnier and better than kickassia and i love it to death, fantastic movie. (p.s. you mentioned dougs singing voice, listen to the review must go on, the song not the video, doug legit sings well in it and its so odd)

Yeah, I also thought that Suburban Knights were better than Kickassia. And Spoony mostly just publicly spiraled down, but he himself agrees that it wasn't okay and he and Allison (Lupa) were good by the time of the document. What was the problem is that online jerks decided that Spoony (who rage-quitted) was "canceled" because of Lupa and she was bullied for that while the site did nothing. As for AT4W movie, I think it's only "shockingly" boring if you didn't watch any storyline material from AT4W before. Otherwise it's predictably consistently comfortably boring X) Calling it TBF's continuations is confusing, it's AT4W dealing with aftermath of TBF, not a sequel.

@@fANYA_KOPlan Interesting that Linkara has made at least two things built around cleaning up the fallout from _To Boldly Flee_ between his own movie and that radio play he did a couple of years back. Almost feels like Lewis wanting to apologize for enjoying this weird little world they all created, because the cleanup thing is in both plot and production.
