It's a small detail, but I really love how when you switch to the tainted characters on the select screen, the narrator sings the background music. Feels like it really brings it all together after the true ending. Like a lullaby he's singing to his son.

Dark bum is still pretty good. It has a 40% droprate for a black heart which is still very high, almost half of the time, giving you plenty chance for survivability. If you're anywhere near decent at the game you'll stack that HP pretty quickly. Black hearts are better than the previously given soul hearts too. The consumables he drops can also be useful when you don't need any more HP or for a character like the lost. Imo I think his changes are more of a sidegrade than a downgrade. I think it's extreme to say that it's nerf makes him as bad as the rest of the bums.

Some interesting things in the final battle is you can see the four horseman reacting in the background. Death face palming before going like "Fine, I'll do it myself" is really cool. Also, the entire finale of the Ascent hit me hard. I felt so bad for Isaac hearing his parents arguing... Isaac didn't deserve this...

I’m actually so glad they reevaluated the existing items for the sake of item balance. There was a large effort to reduce the amount of soul hearts which is why they nerfed dark bum. I hate the notion that nerfs are only needed in online games. Item balance is important in every game. The game breaks in AB+ aren’t as rare as you made it sound. The ease of breaking runs made me start to play less. I don’t like every run being broken, I want it to be a rarity. It needs to feel special.

I don't really agree on balance changes part, the nerfs don't really change the overall difficulty of the game that much because a bunch of other items received buffs, and a lot of new super good items were added into the pools. Also, most of the nerfs are just balancing the items them from broken to very good (example : Maw of the void doesn't drop black hearts anymore but still is a super powerful way to deal damage), there still are a few exceptions where items were too much nerfed to the point of becoming bad (example : serpent's kiss), but I don't feel like it's the majority. Great video overall btw

All the nerfs I mentioned in the video I still stand by being just all around unnecessary and dumb. Yeah, the nerfs arent the worst thing in the world, and I mention that in the video, but its a slippery slope they are going down. I would have preferred them not changing all of the items because the game is already a LOT harder in more fair ways, but still incredibly daunting for new players. To keeps some of the weapons that were a tad overpowered would have been a welcome idea imo to help balance out with the difficulty. Like I said though, Im sucking the game off most of the time and its just something that bothered me. Also glad you enjoyed the video!

@@vinnysuperg123 I know this is an old post but what i kinda miss is that the game isn't that much harder in normal mode and regular path. It's mostly just harder in 1) hard mode and 2) alternative path (or new bosses). The game should have maybe made hard mode unlockable after a few runs in repentance (like greedier) and locked the harder content longer, because hard mode is now actually hard. The new unlocks at another layer of strong items (R key, glitched crown, sacred orb, red key) and so on, so I feel some nerfs are justified. You can't have too many OP items in the game, and antibirth had a lot of fan favourites. l just think that alt path unlocking after only beating hush 3 times is just too brutal, I don't recommend anyone going there on hardmode with les than 500 hours in the game.

@@megavore97 You missed the point of my post. It's not directed towards myself, as an experienced player I can beat hard mode quite easily. The point is that hard mode does make a difference, and new players struggle with the difficulty. Dodging patterns work for the most part, especially for bosses, but there are rooms with different combinations of enemies. Especially the combination of turrets + enemies in a room can overwhelm inexperienced players. And because they are different each time, the shot speed on those turrets or exploding enemies can make a lot of difference in hard mode. Some attacks are also slightly randomized, like spider AI, falling rocks or light beams.

I was originally annoyed and fairly baffled about a lot of the balance changes to the items and such but after playing a lot more I honestly really like most of them. The shop changes are still dogshit generally, but I feel like the game is a far more consistent experience now, and I really like that. There are very few really broken items that carry a run on their own, and it’s led to more focus on synergies, having fewer spikes and dips in the experience of playing different runs, and a heavier focus on items that change the feel and play style rather than just stacking bonuses and multipliers. Especially with more items generally available on average, through means like the alt path, you have more choice and freedom in items and get more of them, making runs that are fun even if you aren’t stupidly broken or crashing your game every time you hit the fire button

The alt floors are such a good addition man. There's so many clever ways to use them, like getting an extra item room out of mausoleum 2, alternating main/alt path to force boss challenge rooms, using the extra floor of downpour 2 for another boss item and extra pickups, there's so many options for how to take a run and them being easy to access/switch to means your path will be different for each character and first floor item set

The problem with afterbirth was that it wasn't balanced. An experienced player such as myself could use exploits to break 8/10 runs and an inexperienced one would be quite underpowered a lot of the time. However, now in Repentance game balance works significantly better. Its not either No power or All the power its usually just a balanced experience and broken runs feel rare and special again That being said J&E is torture and I hate them, still completed the character but it was so awful...

Nerfs are often good for games, full-stop. I see a lot of this sentiment of "why can't you just bring up weaker items to a new standard?" and not only is that not feasible, it's also not healthy. It's power creep, and most often things that need nerfs aren't simple numbers. There was absolutely no need for maw - one of the most damaging items in the game by an almost goofy margin - also needed to generate black hearts and give a damage up. Now this is coming from the perspective of the huge amount of post-launch support that Repentance got (it's so much, I feel like there should be a part 2 to the video), but if you're trying to revamp the entire game so items are as a whole better, then some will need to catch nerfs.

the shop change is a good mechanic its cool to have it be random how many items will be available to you it add variation, and in a roguelike variation like that is cool, its better than before. even the nerf changes are good, the blank card did not make sense to work with runes before so even the nerf is good game design/improving the game. besides all the items buffed also needed the buff its just perfect.

Finally, I'm not the only one thinking that Tainted Judas is Vergil, I mean, cutting through a cluster of proyectiles and watching each individual cut reminds me of most of Vergil's attacks and how much dopamine it gives, damn, it's a judgement cut end. Oh, and btw, there's a new charge bar in the game settings (also, smaller item icons for your inventory) and helps a lot with T. 21:13 I do really like how Jacob & Esau work in the base game, cause it can lead to some really fun gameplay, but I also really like the one mod I found that makes Jacob be controlled with wasd and Esau with the arrow keys with having their shooting being done either manually with the mouse, or automatically tracking and shooting at any enemy (it also meshes really well with the WaterJacob and FireEsau mod turning htem into fireboy and water girl respectively cause the controls are the same as the fire&water flash games, making the thought process easier for me cause I spent a lot of time playing those games)

fun fact: in antibirth there were 3 knife pieces and the mausoleum one looked like this: find a room with working and not working teleporters then find a room full of fires and then extinguish the fires that are on the place that a disabled teleporters are in the teleporter room after you didit you get the third knife piece

I’ve only had 10 hours on rebirth and found repentance to be nicer since I had to learn how to dodge better on hard mode and stuff, and alt path is unlocked after beating hush 3 times so the whole beginners gap is solved by that. The nerfs aren’t completely game altering so it’s not too big of a deal (rip dark bum) And I’m 30 hours now and beat every boss besides beast lol
