The Medieval Slasher genre is a very niche genre of multiplayer action games that has an interesting history behind it. These games are awesome, but also have many significant issues that stifle the genre's potential.

Yeah I wouldn't say melee combat is simpler to implement than fps at all. It depends a bit from game to game but generally it's the reverse

Yeah that's an insane take. Half the things he listed about shooters that make them complicated to program (according to him) are nothing-burgers that could potentially take a few minutes to a few hours each. I've programmed pretty satisfying shooter mechanics in a day before but I imagine it'd take thousands of man-hours of tweaking and testing to make the game-feel of a medieval slasher feel anywhere near as good.

@@ARTEMISXIX I think he meant most FPS games people expect a certain level of complex quality but the majority of people don't expect that same level of complexity in most melee combat games, just being satisfied with light and heavy attacks.

Thank you for the video, I quit Mordhau before eastern invasion part 2 and this was really nostalgic, very bittersweet. I tried Chiv 2 but the meme stuff/community and customization wasn't the same not to mention the combat didn't feel as smooth and nice to play as Mordhau's (tho at least there's less scuffed stuff that makes "fights look more like fights", and throwing things is cool) so it couldn't keep my interest. I'm not going back to Mordhau so I hope those upcoming games succeed but I really don't have much hope for their quality or popularity if they don't match Mordhau's budget

Making melee combat being easier is an insane hot take lol. Animation matching, transitions, ray tracing or spawning proper collision boxes at exact point in the animation etc. I'd argue doing fps is way easier since there is way more established pipelines and at the end of the day, its either spawning projectiles or raytracing to a specific point.

First person hack and slashes like this will never, ever have a big audience. Period. They have a very high skill ceiling wich just ends with noobs being stomped and quitting. The game also actively punishes strategies noobs gravitate towards. It was near imposible for me to get any friends to play this game, wich honestly ended with me leaving to play other things with them.

good video man. I'd only add one thing to the mordhau topic - the biggest issue of the game, the reason I left it after ~300h is that their main point was to fix ballerina moves. And, you guessed it, it was not fixed. It was even worse in some cases than chiv1! Now, while chiv2 still has some issues with this, it's much better here

Havent finished watching but IMO the hardest part of Medieval slasher games really is balancing the combat, mainly because Medieval combat doesn't work like movies or stereotypes, knights could sprint in full plate armor and were actually pretty fast and padded jackets actually defend against Longbows, and Archers aren't mass produced and bad melee fighters. I believe two incidents from the hundred years war explains it best, one where 60 Men At Arms fought each other and a battle where the english commander tried to fight archers. During the 60 man battle, some of the knights brought horses, polearms, etc. And only about 11 people died, apparentally from getting ganged on, so basically you could have 64 player battles and only 5 guys would have any kills. Another one was some battle where a French archer killed the English commander... with an Axe. Ironically i feel like Mount And Blade shares all these traits for like entirely different reasons lmao.

I have recently been trying to start GameDev, and was looking to make something with a basic variant of this type of combat, I wanted to see if you would be willing to DM a bit about the combat mechanics and what kinds of things I should try to achieve to accomplish good feeling combat in a similar vein. No promise the game goes somewhere, but been trying to gather information conceptually right now and you seem like someone that would have great opinions to explore. If not, I still appreciate you.

If you wanna play good medieval type games here is my list Mordhau Chivalry Kingdom Come Deliverance Mount and Blade Skyrim I know that skyrim, Mount and Blade and Kingdom Come are singleplayer games but they have to many pros to neglect. All of them are more relaxing and actually focus on story instead of mainly a fun combat system. Skyrim can also be formed into whatever you want so thats a plus. Mount and Blade also has strategic elements and Kingdom Come Deliverance just is immersive as fuck.

I know For Honor is a completely different beast, but it is still direction based medieval combat game. Players I know seem to compare it much more with Soulsbornes, maybe because it is 3rd person, but I think there are enough similarities to include it in the Chivalry Mordhau niche

I think it's the match type itself that separates it from these, max 4v4 compared to the chaos lobbies Mordhau/Chiv gets, it's just a lot calmer I guess ? Just imagine getting ganked by 10 dudes in For Honor, just fighting against 4 coordinated players with annoying characters is enough to give you all kinds of mental disorders so I don't even wanna imagine more. Still love For Honor though.

I am proud to say that I have improved greatly at not killing teammates when on Agatha. Sometimes in the heat of the moment you just see red and swing your sword at it but I've gotten better at redirecting it into the ground or the ceiling or a wall or just away from them when I notice the blue under the blood
