This cutscene was so confusing for me as a kid. I was like "Why are they killing the main bad guy!" just to be shown seconds later that he was one of them, and actually... good? I don't even think I realized that those other robots were his friends when he was younger. Up until seeing this video, I think I just thought he was the only good ROB. It's even possible that as a kid, I thought the Ancient Minister was a different character that either transformed into ROB, or was hiding ROB inside.

Like a Zelda into Sheik transformation? I didn't know what the ROB toy was when I first played Brawl, so I thought this was a unique character to Subspace, not an unheard of thing for many crossover-style games. I got the idea that Ancient Minister/ ROB was having a change of heart and didn't want the damage to keep going so he switched sides.

I kind of feel that The Minister being the last R.O.B. is a jab at how bad the 80's toy worked, so most of them were busted by the the time Brawl came out. So in all honesty, this story arc makes sense, and it's even more fitting that it's Ganondorf who kills all of them, because Zelda NES practically killed R.O.B. sales (and also that creepy CG ad).

When I was a kid, I though that the ancient minister would be playable after defeating him (I though he was the main antagonist and the final boss) but then I realized that he was getting more sad by every cutscene, when this cutscene played I almost cried them got super hyped when he revealed his true identity, meta ridley was the hardest boss for me because I was still hyped for him and I couldn't play good

They did such a good job with the SSE cutscenes. Even without dialogue, I was able to come to very similar conclusions, obviously barring some of the more specific details. It just goes to show how effective "show don't tell" really is.

Agreed you could really tell the way he hung back in one of them that he didn't like what he was doing and of course at the factory where he looked defeated and tried to stop the rest of them as best as he could even to the end (notice the blue eyes at the end) perhaps that was due to diddy kong trying to tell him to try again which at first he thinks is pointless but does end up trying at the end.

This scene broke me when I was younger. Just looking at him standing there, metaphorically and physically burning from his mistakes is so impactful. It works even better when he finally fights back, getting rid of the machine he was moments ago to show that change would stick with R.O.B. forever.

Justice for Sepia Toad Gotta say, this cutscene didn't bring tears to my eyes, but it was pretty damn close. This cutscene really helps the build-up of Ganondorf as a villain, and, as you said, brings an epic conclusion to the Ancient Ministers character arch. It doesn't really help stop Tabuu from feeling like a last-second addition so you could acquire all the characters but still. Edit: One last thought. This cutscene and all the others you've shown, from best to worst, silliest to saddest, show why subspace emissary far and away out classes world of light.

However, a weird thing to note is that no R.O.B. enemies are anywhere in the Great Maze; perhaps they and only they are unable to survive the process of being caught in a Subspace Bomb explosion.

One thing to note also is that because so many explosions occurred at once on the Isle of the Ancients, it didn't manage to regenerate after the Subspace Army was defeated like the other locations. So not only R.O.B. became the last of his kind but his home and any semblance of it was destroyed without a trace except the "X" that we see during the ending/intro of Brawl. Man, the story of Subspace is tragic as hell. Hopefully you do full-on review of the mode/story as there are many things to discuss and analyze. Stay awesome as always, Zoom.

It's wild to me that a plot as complex and tragic as ROB's (which, I remind you, was basically a console accessory) came from what was mostly a dialogue-less crossover celebration focused on the mere spectacle of a Nintendo meet-n'-greet. Hey, can we talk about mario, the most badass leader? Did you see how focused and serious he looked most of the time? How he was always the first to take charge? How he he defeated link? (Because the vise versa isn't canonically possible) How when the subspace army was out there, but our 5 heroes were there to help with the fight, and MARIO is still the first one to jump down there and fight like a badass?! Another example of a good character: bowser. He was portrayed perfectly. Compared to the other leaders, he just attacked and kidnapped people, like in the mario games. And in the end, he got betrayed by Ganon, a much smarter villain. When I first played brawl, I had only really played mario and watching my childhood villain get backstabbed made me hate ganon even more.

Something I like from this cutscene is the music. There absolutely no other place on the game where you can hear that music, you can only hear it on like 3 cutscenes, you can't listen to it anywhere in the game. The save point music is similar but it's still different. (It's slower, has a missing part and is slightly high pitched but I might be wrong about the last one) I wish someone would extract the music from the game files and upload it to KZbin because I really like it.

It's a shame because I really like it, but that's just how it is, I guess.

Oh i remember this was the most EPIC scene when i was a kid ( well all of the scenes in subspace emissary are epic ) me and my sister were at the edge of our sit, it was so sad and We could understand everything that was happening, even without dialogue, that shows how truly of a masterpiece is SE. When ROB was burning it looked like it was the end, but then EPIC BRAWL THEME APPEARED!!! and the mysterious robot revealed himself !! The bad guy join our team now and me and my sister were ready to FIGHT and avenge ROB's friends 😭 idk it such a good memory!! Its a wonderful experience

I feel so bad for R.O.B. He had to watch the rest of his species sacrifice themselves in order to activate bombs. They were only created for that purpose. R.O.B was the only one of his species that survived subspace. He didn't even question why he was releasing the bombs until later in subspace. And by then it was too late.
