One way of solving a problem like this is a "border patrol" - an inescapable enemy that kills you if you go out of bounds. In the case of a Mario game, I think a giant fish would work.

I beat it the intended way. I mean, of course I'd talk to all the NPCs in the vicinity to get instructions or hints on how to beat the mission. People don't do that? The NPCs are there for a reason you know.
