This show is one of the best examples of generational trauma spanning through time. Bojack never had a chance, he was shot in the foot from the day he was conceived. Joseph Sugarman destroyed Beatrice, robbed her of a mother and of a childhood, and in turn Beatrice and Butterscotch destroyed Bojack.

That's not true. He could've caught the bullshit if he was self reflective and wanted to be better badly enough. He didn't. The character even let someone die because he didn't want to help. Don't make it seem like that kind of behavior isn't problematic.

Then, bojack destroyed Sarah Lynn. Putting the ideology of entertaining people "until the curtain calls", and only then could she stop when she died tragically young, or died naturally. She spent her whole life entertaining people despite wanting to become an architect. Out of all the people Bojack has made a bad impact on, Sarah Lynn was the one who probably suffered the most due to his trauma. This is shown more during her performance at the show in Bojacks mind: "The chatter stops, the crowd departs, a needle drops, the music starts. A song you taught me when I was small. Don’t stop dancing." She kept dancing until her curtain called.

My grandfather’s the same way. He idolizes his father for “being born tough and dying tough” and emulates him in a way. In reality, my great grandfather was horribly abusive in every way and drove all his children to insanity and self-destruction. My great aunt and uncles all died early, but my grandfather sits in his house wasting away as he hold onto that fracturing worldview one shattered piece at a time. He convinced himself that his childhood was normal, and that any fault lies with himself, and he’s acknowledged that he might be wrong, but that he doesn’t care. I think he’s convinced that if he admits to himself he’s a victim and allows himself to feel that weakness he’ll break. In trying to be like his father, he doesn’t know how to show his children and grandchildren proper affection, and accidentally traumatized me through emotional and verbal abuse. Sometimes I think that out of his siblings, his fate is the worst.

Yo when I was a kid I loved the show Naruto. I drew pictures of the characters and posted them all over my walls. I collected books, and watched every episode, I have games and movies and everything. I’d always talk about it. I even got some poster board and drew a big as picture of Deidara to hang above my bed because I was so proud of it. I was at my creative peak. My mom didn’t like it because she said I was obsessed to I moved the picture to my closet wall and put up ribbons and stuff around it. When she found it she collected everything I had related to the show, threw them all in a big black bag and trashed them. I remember walking to her room and seeing the full bag sitting outside of her bedroom. I could see the manga poking out of it. Later she took away a beanie baby that a cared for because she thought that I thought it was real because I was feeding it at a restaurant like kids fucking do. I threw a fit in the parking lot and she sent me to a psych hospital. Now I don’t like doctors and I have no hobbies. I’ve been raised on medication because she didn’t know how to communicate with me. She still thinks I was crazy for liking a show. I wonder why I’ve been depressed and anxious my whole life? I wonder why I can’t make friends. What’s funny is that she has an abnormal obsession with collecting toys and both her and her lover are hoarders so I feel like I’m being buried alive in garbage. Yeah apparently I’m this way because of myself. More pills plz thanks.

This is even more depressing when you realise this character jas dementia which is why most people have blurred faces. She can't remeber any more and the burning of her stuff is basically a representation of her mind burning her memories out. The plush she is holding is her happiest memory, and even that is burned eventually. Atleast that's what I interpurate from this scene

This explains so much about Beatrice… she was deliberately raised to be the way she was. To be cold and cruel, so that she can be “strong”. Let go of attachments and don’t get attached to anything (or anyone) else for the pain of losing them would be crippling. Create a wall- a barrier- so strong that no one could break your defences. It really is an incredible thing when writers make you sympathize with someone you would’ve originally started off hating.

The Era of 1930-1950 in the US was full of misogyny, racism, and abuse. Many parents either had really screwed up ways of raising their kids due to their own abuse from their parents or were just plain bitter and abusive because life wasn't kind to many in those days... In Beatrices case; her father was a rich, corrupt POS who would gladly lobotimize his wife than lose money or burn his daughters stuff causing her trauma just because he was worried. It really is a cycle of pain and suffering that is only ceased by empathy and kindness.

Well basically her husband got the cleaning lady pregnant and so that the family wouldn't get a bad reputation she told the cleaning lady to have an abortion. She didn't want to do that so Beatrix made her an offer. She would get the child but would have to give it up for adoption and would never be allowed to have any contact with the child. She manipulated the woman into agreeing. She told her that having a child would be a big deal and that she still had her whole life ahead of her and that she could give up her dream of studying if she had it. The offer was that she would pay the tuition fees if she gave the child up for adoption. If the mother had taken the baby in her arms she would probably have kept it and then the family's reputation, their deal and the life of the new mother would have been gone.

'what did we say about crying? Crying is... Stupid.' How to be a shit dad 101
@Heretic_JonesАй бұрын
I think about how poignant that line he says is: “Crying is stupid!” It’s such a short and simple line, you don’t think much about it during the scene. But I think it serves as a really strong reflection of the problems expressed within that family. Grieving is shamed. It’s belittled. Weaknesses are pounced on and used to hurt a person, rather than helping them grow. Things (as well as people) are broken and taken away so often, it harms any sense of forming healthy bonds and attachments. It’s the casual and calm way he’s speaking to her as they burn her things. They’ve been infected. And while it’s clearly about the literal influenza that was deadly back in the day, it could also be considered a metaphor of sorts. Joseph Sugarmann saw Beatrice as weak and broken because she would express emotions in ways he found pointless, and saw that as weakness. So he dealt with it how he thought was right, by metaphorically beating it out of her. To show her “feeling is stupid. All it does is hurt.” And he succeeded. The seeds of detachment and cruelty sunk deep in Beatrice like claws. Any hope of kindness and empathy had been ripped out, so by the time Bojack came along she had none left. He never had a chance. Beatrice didn’t either. Her father made sure of that. Whether he meant well can be argued, but I don’t think that matters in the end. The road to hell is paved in “good intentions”. It doesn’t matter if someone “means well” if they end up doing more harm than good.
@mayeryncarty47952 жыл бұрын
Beatrice saved that woman’s future even though that woman fvcked her husband and disrespected her . She did for her what her parents didn’t do for her and what she couldn’t do for Bojack and that’s a redeeming quality no one else in the whole show has had
@rosesweetcharlotte2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Beatrice had a very complicated dynamic with Henrietta. On the one hand, I think she did hate her for sleeping with her husband and becoming pregnant with his child. On the other hand, Beatrice loved Henrietta and saw in her all of her own missed opportunities. She really did believe she was giving her the best chance. The thing is, we don't know what Henrietta's and Hollyhock's lives would have been like. Henrietta probably would have been a lot less bitter and mean than Beatrice. Beatrice was essentially deciding her fate for her.

@@mayeryncarty4795 Henrietta was a very young girl who clearly had her own issues. That is clear. But at the same time, she was asking for help. She was trying to better herself and she was reaching out to the only people she had. And honestly, asking Bojack's dad for money wasn't inappropriate given that she was pregnant with his child. And even Beatrice realized that Henrietta had been manipulated and wasn't really at fault.
@mayeryncarty47952 жыл бұрын
@@rosesweetcharlotte thats bs .Beatrice literally saw Henrietta flirting with her husband and told both of em it bothered her only for them to proceed to have sex in HER HOUSE . Also Henrietta asked BEATRICE for money not her husband and her issues aren’t Beatrice’s business you don’t fvck someone’s husband in their face and then ask them to pay your whole college fee. Henrietta was hired to care for Beatrice and she wasn’t even doing that right.
@XavierVB2 жыл бұрын
@@mayeryncarty4795 kzbin.info/www/bejne/mX_aaaKgfKyIpZo If you watch the scene, you can clearly see that she was more concerned about what would happen to Henrietta than the fucking affair. Henrietta asked for help because she was clearly struggling, and Beatrice *choose* to help her because she experienced what would truly happen if she stayed with Butterscotch. Henrietta was just asking for some help, not to pay off her entire schooling. That was entirely Beatrice’s choice because she clearly wanted Henrietta to have a better life than she did. Outside of the scene alone, this show is too nuanced to be so one-sided.
