Growing up in a suburb 20 minutes away from the city, there were many people who in high school would refuse to drive to San Francisco. Being one of the few people in my friend group who wasn’t afraid to drive in the city at all meant I was almost always driving when we went to the city. But driving in rush hour traffic on so many streets can be difficult. Kearny, Bush, Montgomery, Stockton, Broadway, Geary and Van Ness are always jammed, or at least they were before the pandemic

4:54 I think this is the usual high caution setting they do with major (and even not so major revisions). I think they tend to set caution high, gather data, and lower the caution setting with the next point release, or maybe they can change that parameter over the air without a software update. Honestly though, that predictive ability on the cyclist is impressive. I don't think I would even have noticed them. As far as sudden hard braking causing problems for cars behind you, it's planner almost certainly takes that into account. I've yet to see an FSD beta video where the car brake with a following car close behind. _Theory:_ that may even be one of the big factors that determines how smoothly it deals with these kinds of situations -- if no one is behind you to rear-end you, then it is more likely to brake hard and over-cautiously, but if someone is close behind it factors that in and does a more smooth cautious slowdown. Might be an interesting thing for you to pay attention to and see if it bears out. But also question: _For you, has FSD ever hit the brakes too hard/overcautiously while another car was actually following too close behind?_ [edit: and then at 6:25 you say precisely this... although... were you _really_ almost rear ended there? Doesn't seem like your or the car behind were going fast enough for that braking to be excessively risky. Annoying, yes, and a bit more risky than necessary, but not excessively risky]

Was very impressed at 10:50 where you show the difference in behavior for the same exact spot - it's exactly like a (lazy, like me lol) human driver would drive: if there's nobody there, you can cut across lanes in a turn, who cares, its smoother and requires less steering - but if there is a car in the lane, you behave more properly and make a larger turn without cutting.

I can totally relate to the "human condition" as a major hurdle towards being comfortable in a self driving car. I don't have a self driving vehicle myself, but even driving something with radar cruise control is enough to realize how impatient people can get, how complex driving is and the risks we consider acceptable during the every day commute. Radar cruise control typically maintains a larger following distance than most drivers. It doesn't take long for others to want to tailgate or cut you off, even though all you are doing is maintaining a safe distance in traffic. I think if there was a away to make it readily apparent to other motorists that a vehicle is operating in an autonomous mode, maybe people would have more patience. Much like I would hope most drivers have more patience with students learning to drive.

I like the extra effort you put into the editing of these videos. I wonder if the more manic switching between lanes is one of the first implementations of the language of lanes concept? If i understand correctly, it would cause the car to select a lane as opposed to splitting between them. I'm not sure the exact timeline though, it may have already been implemented.

General comment on caution vs assertiveness: two major reasons for excessive caution are (1) it doesn't yet understand everything it sees with high enough confidence: if there is uncertainty about the speed of a crossing pedestrian, the position of a car, or the presence of an object, it has to act according to the worst-case scenario within the range of possibilities. (2) Tesla is going to keep the caution level high to absolutely minimize the chance of a serious accident in the beta program. As further improvements to the AI decrease perception uncertainty they can afford a narrower margin of error, and it can be more assertive in the kinds of situations a human would, while also being much safer.

My mom and wife are super cautious drivers and I'm a bit more aggressive (less so now that I'm old), but hey have both had accidents in the last two years as a result of overly defensive tendencies, while other drivers actually expect my movements. It's a comment on society being more aggressive of course, but that is actually how the world is, so...

SF driving is no joke. That city can feel like a straight up death trap when you're on the road sometimes. Hence why I, and others, prefer to commute via public transit to the city when possible. Obviously there is still plenty of work to be done with self driving systems, but the fact that it can (somewhat) competently drive in a difficult environment such as this is very impressive. I'm excited to see future improvements.

My theory after years of driving in SF on why everyone is in such a hurry all the time is because the city is so small and congested (7miles by 7 miles) and everyone feels they need to make up time where they will or already did lose time. The fact that it takes 1.5 hours to go just 3 miles on public transit in SF says all you need to know about how fast traffic is usually able to go haha.

Human drivers are impatient everywhere. I haven't watched a youtuber yet that doesn't say the drivers around here are terrible. Too many people have no respect for other people, they seem to think they are the most important person in the world so they can do whatever they want. That includes the youtubers that drive 10 mph over the speed limit because "everyone does it". Thanks for the great content.

Maybe they just have more experience than you driving and don't need to wait 10 seconds to know the road is clear to go. It is funny how the "10 over the limit" is used as an insult that it isn't safe driving. If there is little to no traffic, it isn't any less safe unless someone needs to brake hard (bad driver or random tesla phantom brake). Just because you are going 40 on an empty road doesn't mean you are any more safe than someone going 50

This thing still not being able to make timely lane changes for upcoming turns is a disaster in big cities like SF. If you don't make the correct right turn you are screwed into an adventure into a neighborhood you should never have seen, with dead ends, one way roads, etc. Not just an inconvenience, a potentially day-changing reroute.

@@AIDRIVR Just make sure to not forget about the 80:20 rule. 80% of the effort is done in 20% of the time. The last 20% take 80% of the time. Find the right middle ground and don't overdo it or you'll lose interest quickly as it's just too much work editing. I've seen way to many KZbinrs quitting because of this... :)

Nice video! Have you considered putting up the power meter on one side of your dash when recording videos to provide some perspective on the car's acceleration & deceleration? Getting it back is the first thing I do every time I activate FSD Beta & the car hides my apps on each side of the dash. I like the full screen view in FSD Beta because even after bringing back the power meter I can still see vehicles, etc in the background

I really enjoyed this video because of the many difficult scenarios that I sure wouldn't have been able to handle so smoothly the first time. Also, you gave me a bit of hope that we might see the beta in Germany one day. How much space has FSD allowed for cyclists to pass? In Germany you should give them at least 5 feet on city streets and 6.5 feet outside of cities. Would be interesting if it has already implemented these regulations - but I don't know your regulations. What does your law say about this distance?

Would the self driving be improved if there was options to bring up the aggressive setting while dealing with human situations like letting a car go first or committing to a turn? seems being too careful is hurting its ability to drive smoothly when the situation is complex. Driving requires a great degree of knowing when to be aggressive and when to be nice. There's a lot of coding tesla has to do to be able to figure out which to use in that circumstance😅

Not that I am not giving this enterprise all the time in the world for it to succeed (so that it can do what the movie "I, Robot" accomplished in its self driving cars) but as I recall one major accident was when the FSD could not pick up a semi, perhaps because it was colored white, somewhat like the sky at the time. HERE, I noticed at around 0.51 that the orange/yellow bus was portrayed as a white semi. I wonder if this had anything to do with that horrendous accident years back. I know the updates probably negate this but that seems to be more than just a coincidence. As ALL the vehicle projections are white, perhaps adding color at the very least for school buses, would assist?

Great video and narration as always. Is that a new S/X that I saw with Yoke in your video? Did you see any difference in FSD behavior in the new car? I am assuming that it does not have HW4 yet?

It's called Lombard Street (Russian Hill). There's also Vermont Street which is similar. It's a design meant to make it possible for cars to traverse a very steep grade hill.
